CREATIVITY I9 DE MONQTRATED Imagination and creativity of the art classes, under the direction of Mrs. Margret Willis, were demonstrated in the eleventh annual art exhibit. Their works, which included use of such media as watercolor, chalk, paper mache, tissue paper, and lndia ink, were well- received by those who attended. Mobils and outstanding wall hangings of stitchery were displayed on the walls and in the library. The pieces shown attest to the fact that a gradu- ate of this class has truly discovered the fascination of the colorful world of art. Students of the elementary school were the first visitors to the art exhibit. Many interesting comments were heard, about which picture was pretty and which one was not. The mark of a good abstract is that it is interesting from any angle. Mike Gehrs proves the point to his satisfaction. Barb Gugel is either shouting for icy, or screaming in frustration. Mrs. Willis and Karen Koehler can't quite figure out which.

IIANY LANDS The faces of Arthur Loesel's United States literature class all seem to reflect the old adage, Laughter is the essence of life. Experienced by every student, the English department consists of varied courses designed to stimulate each one. Traditionally, the freshman year, in the form of communication skills as taught by Joy Atkins and Arthur Loesel, was dedicated to capturing the allusive intricacies of lan- guage. Sophomores were allowed to choose the two other courses necessary to complete their grad- uation requirements. They were confronted with United States literature, instructed by Mr. Loesel or Roger Tompkins who also teaches sports in literature, creative writing, directed by Mrs. Joy Atkins, and Mrs. Margret Willis' classes, world literature and English literature rounded out the program. Although the degree of enioyment may differ between students, each realized the importance of attaining a command of the native English, and a background of literary heritage. For those who desired experience in another language, courses in German were offered. James Weber and Arthur Pelzer shared the load of these classes. By acquiring this linguistic ability, the student also broadened his local heritage, tightened his community ties, and increased his under- standing of English. Mrs. Joy Atkins lists the steps to be taken for a well written composition in her freshman communication skills classroom. Clowning around in Roger Tompkins' sports in literature class is fbottom, leftl P. Loveless, M. Schiefer, D. English, K. Bickel, R. Haubenstricker, T. Yoba, and C. Ferguson.
