Formed in 1958, the Quill and Scroll Society was named in honor of the scHool's first journalism teacher, Mrs, Margret Y, Willis. Membership into this international honorary society for high school journalists is based upon two main areas ---- the student must be a junior or senior in the top one-third of his classg and he must have done superior work in some phase ofjournalism. Each choose one student who has contributed the most to the class, and his name is 'inscribed on the Quill and Scroll plaque. As the school expanded, membership in this society increased, Members of this society are chosen because they have exemplified the qualities for which the emblem stands: character, scholarship, leadership, and service, On February 15, this society inaugurated another first for Frankenmuth High School when the Alfred Zink Chapter became the sponsoring organization for Millington High School's new chapter, The Frankenmuth chapter inducted 30 of their students in an impressive candle lighting service, directed by Mrs, Margret Y, Willis.

SEATED: Gloria List, Marjorie Mueller, Lois List, Julie Vanwormer, Debate offers students an opportunity to develop not only their speaking ability, but encourages them to think logically, The debaters enjoyed a record of 75013 victories for which they received a Detroit Free Press plaque for excellence in high school debating. Elimination play-offs were held during the latter part of the school year as members put their ability to a test, Myles Willard, pictured below, emerged as champion after a tremendous display. The Chess Club at FHS was organizedwhena group of serious- minded students displayed an interest in the challenging game. At first the number of players was smallg but gradually enthusiasm was aroused, and the number of avid chess fans grew. In December of 1960 the Chess Club, consisting of twenty-six members, was officially formed, with Carl Schmitzer being elected president. Meetings were held every day during noon hour, 30
