Working on their college English themes are left to right, William Hrinik, Mary Zeilinger, Suzanne Simpson, and Kay Brechtelsbauer. English Teaching the elements of the English language are left to rightg Donald Barnett, Thomas Thompson, Mrs. Margret Willis, and Miss Lois Curtis. The English department at Frankenmuth High School has been patterned after the requirements established by most colleges. Under this systemthe freshman year is devoted to the review of the elements of languageg sophomores receive further instruction in grammargjuniors become acquainted with American literature, and seniors are familiarized with English authors. Freshman English classes, under the instruction of Donald Barnett, reviewed the fundamentals of grammar, Thomas Thompson, in charge of teaching sophomore English, spent the year instructing students in further grammar usuage and time was also devoted to a study of the sophomore literature books. Typical of high school programs geared for students' better understanding of American authors, the section of the junior class taught by Margret Willis devoted their time to becoming familiar. with authors who helped mold the opinions and policies of our country. Mr. Barnett, also a junior instructor acquainted his students with American contemporary authors through the use of paperback books. This year,an ' college English program was instigated. The seniors were given a choice of taking college English, designed for students who plan to continue their educationg terminal English, intended for students whose formal education will end with high schoolg and improvement English, set up for students who have difficulty in English. Lois Curtis served as instructor for college and terminal English classes and Donald Barnett was in charge of the improvement English class. .y1 'f
