Martin, Jr. Andrea Kelly Editor Bob Hoffmann Business Managers f ec icaiion This first publication of the TALON is dedicated to a man who has done more than any other individual to establish here at Cox a school with unshakeable foundations of leadership. We can ' t begin to suggest here the role he has played, but we can say that because of it we have come to know him as an indispensable part of Cox. Through seasons of growing pains, we have rallied under his ceaseless efforts of progress and his re- spected judgment. Always willing to assist others--his office is never closed to those wishing to enter for advice- -his relations with students have come to be prized experiences. As much as he is the father of our school, he is also the devoted father of two children at his own home. He personifies the enviable characteristics associated with brilliance in leadership and scholarship. Therefore, it is with a feeling of particular pride that Frank W. Cox High School recognizes this man by gratefully dedicating the ' 63 TALON to its first principal, Mr. Walter N. Carroll. 6 Mr. Frank W. Cox CTlppreciaiion This page is given to Mr. Frank W. Cox in appreciation of his leadership in our new city ' s public school system, his interest in the welfare of our school, and the things he has done to further the development of our community. No other individual except him- self can possibly be fully aware of the vast extent to which he has exerted himself in order to make our school proud to hold his name. In return for his display of merit, we register a most solemn oath to make our sch ool in his stead an unexcelled institution of leadership. Let us endeavor to make him as proud of us as we are of him. U ie c i ' or 7 UJie CPrincipa s JKessa e January 30, 1963 Office of the Principal Frank W. Cox High School To The Students of Frank W. Cox High School, This annual represents the combined efforts of the faculty and student body. It is designed to give you pleasant memories of the many activities in which you have been involved and to remind you of the part you are playing in molding this school. You have exemplified a great deal of enthusiasm and a spirit of cooperation which will challenge the best in all that follow. My hope is that, as the years go by, each of you will feel that this school has been a vital part of your life. If o, the purposes of this school will have achieved some degree of success. 10 FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Gilbert, Owens, Lyon, Owins, Brillhart, Mur- den. It is also the place where the privileges of self-government are exercised by the students. With the guidance of the faculty and the sponsorship of Mr. D. R. Baker --to whom we are most indebted for the spirit maintained at Cox--our Student Council has striven for the attainment of a better Cox High School. Our S.C.A. ' s list of accomplishments this year defies all other S.C.A. ' s to better them. We have experienced a great diversity of activity, as is usually the case with a new school. Among the many things we find done are our S.C.A. constitution; establishment of an Inter-Club Council; a Code of Ethics; a Student Directory; a remodeled Student Activities Office; student assembly leadership; a S.C.A. scrapbook; and the first annual Leadership Conference. Synchronized activities are now out of the dreaming stages and have become fact. We wish to recognize the loss of our first president, Ken Johnson, to Key West, Florida. His service to the school can never be over estimated, and we. Former president, Ken Johnson, pre- siding at mass meeting of representa- tives. 55 UJie S7n er G u Gouncif CPfans O c iui ies Essential to the proper development of any school is a council where individual representatives of school functions and activities may come and coordinate their ac tivities to parallel each other ' s development. Such an organization in our school is the Inter- Club Council, and during the past year it has bloomed with an amazing array of achievement. Largely responsible for the success of the Inter-Club Council is the chairman, Dane Mills. Through the leadership of Dane, the sponsorship of Mr. D. R. Baker, and the support of every council member, Frank W. Cox High School has experienced a smooth-flowing, enriched school year. FRONT ROW (Left to Right): D. Mills, chairman; P. He entered East Carolina College and played on the football squad, and also slugged his way playing base- ball to all-conference honors as a sophomore and all-conference, all-state recognition in his senioryear. After graduating from college, Mr. Soles j oined the professional baseball ranks play- ing center-field. He then taught physical edu- cation and coached for nine years prior to his arrival here at Cox. In 1962 he led the football Falcons to a win- ning campaign- -very much improved over the ' 61 campaign. Many fine prospects for future honor on the gridiron were unveiled with the help of Mr. Soles ' well-trained eye. Hopes for next year ' s season are high as we support Mr. Soles efforts to produce a team unmatched in other schools. His work with the wrestling team this year has good reason to stand up and take a bow. Although his first season, he whipped a team together that has seldom been beaten, and has tasted victory throughout the district schools. GoacJies SparA afc cons Mr. Stuart Holland is a native of Tidewater- - born in Portsmouth. He attended Edenton High School and during his four years there he received athletic letters every year in baseball, football, and basketball. Mr. Holland favors football and entered East Carolina College on a football scholarship. Playing quarterback he obtained all- conference honors in his junior ana senior years. Since coming to Cox, Mr. Holland has aided Mr. Soles in producing two football teams . He himself has molded two highly successful and winning basketball teams. Playing on a junior-varsity level, the ' 62- ' 63 basketball Falcons dropped only three contests, losing only to Barry Robinson and Norfolk Chris- tian Varsity. Having been Presi- dent of the Key Club for two years, Brad is an able leader of our student body and won the Most Outstanding Leadership Award for 1961-62. Participation in the Student Council and an active interest in sports cause him to come in contact with most of the stu- dents at Cox, who consider him a familiar sight at the school grounds after classes. His great sense of sportsmanship andf? play is evident not only on the football f;.-ld and basketball court but in everything he does. A strong sense of humor rounds out his personality, and coupled with his con- geniality shows why he is the outstanding person we know. 93 1962 Holly Wreath Ball Mr. Cox accepts school code from Dane Mills, Vice-President of the S.C.A.
