LOOKING UP This year’s team had quite a few good games. They ended the season with 7 wins and 3 losses. One of their best games was against Harding. The game started out with Bunnell scoring 14 in the opening minutes and then continued on to a 21 to 12 win. Bill Kochiss made a good play when he retrieved the ball after Harding fumbled. Steve Kelly and Gary Charney played exceptionally well with the first two touchdowns of the game. The players this year were very hard working and enthusiastic. Many of the seniors were selected as members of the A11-MB1AC team. They are Bob Joy, Jeff Proudfoot, and Mike Farrell. Those selected for the second team are Bill Kochiss, Steve Kelly, Joe Rosbrough, Brian Discko and Chris Barone were given honor- able mention. SOCCER Row 1 Standing: D. Champaigne. M. Williams, S. Improvements in opposing teams, as well as the lack of exper- ienced players on the squad, are probable causes for the losing re- cord. Seniors who played on the team were Paul O’Hegyi, Alan Villella, Eric Moss, Gene O'Neill and Cap- tain Dan Neuberger. Although the team’s efforts proved fruitless, underclassmen gained valuable experience. This year was a building year. Next year’s team will be returning with 9 starting players, so the outlook for a winning season is good. Next year’s team will be led by co-captains Nick Tsichlas and Chip Hunziker. p. 66, lower left, Alan Villella p. 67, lower left, Paul O’Hcgyi p. 67, center. The Volleyball team ended its ’78 season with a varsity win loss record of 4-11 beating Harding twice and both Bassick and Milford once. The J.V. team ended with a 3-10 record beating Notre Dame, Saint Joseph’s and Bassick. The individual accomplishments and talents of many of the members contributed to an improvement in teamwork. Captain Judy Eckert, an MB1 AC first team selection, had an outstand- ing season, setting 4 school records. She scored the most points during a match, 21 against Harding, and scored the highest number of points, 102 during one season. Judy had a career total of 185, and averaged 10.2 points a game, setting her 3rd and 4th school records. Also chosen for the first team in the MBIAC was co-captain Joyce MacLennon. She too, set school records, in spiking. She had a season total of 39 spikes and made the most spikes in one game, 8, during the Bassick match. Junior Janet Hromjak, who averaged 5.5 points per match, set another school record, with a serving percentage of a high 92.4. Junior Teri Carilli, who averaged 5 points per match, received an honorable mention for the MBIAC volleyball team. Other seniors who contributed to the team’s good season were Lisa Otzel and Lisa Marus. Juniors looking forward to a successful senior year on the volleyball team in ’79 are Nancy Cartiglia, Bonnie DeLorme, Karen Pruzinsky, Pam Russell and Debbie White. Returning for the second season next year will be sophomores Janet LaReau, Liz Miller, Lesa Milas.Tish Morrisey, Rachael Petitti, Eileen Stoddart and Maureen Warren. 69 CROSS COUNTRY p The Cross Country team had one of the most competitive schedules of area teams. The team per- formed against many out-of-league schools in addi- tion to MB1AC competition. The highlight of the season was defeating arch-rival Stratford High School for the fifth consecutive year by a score of 22-39. Leading the team this year was co-captain Paul Altieri, who was their most consistent runner. Also performing well were juniors Tim Beardsley and Bob Ambrose. Senior Bob Minatti and co-captain Tom Walther also made extremely significant con- tributions. Tim Beardsley placed 17th in the MBIAC competition and Bob Ambrose, 22nd. The team went on to state sectionals where Paul Altieri came in 58th out of 130 runners. In the sectionals, the team came in 15th. The outlook for next year is bright, with under- classmen Waddington, Henschel, LaFollette, Beardsley, and Ambrose all returning. CO Bottom row: P. Brcnton, manager; B. Minatti; T. Four sophomores who swam exceptionally well were Amy Foote, who is the top scorer on the team, Laura Neuberger, who is the team's backstroker, Michele Spigarolo and Anne Gruce. Waddington As compared to past seasons, the basketball team started off better than usual. Much of this was due to Senior Dave Dubuque. Dave led the squad with a 14 point per game average and overall Dave excells with his lightning quick defense. Tim Miller was in there all the way for Bunnell with his tough defense. Ron Nolting, Mark Sobieraj, and Bob Jossick rounded out the starters with some fine ball-playing. Supporting Sobieraj next year will be promising returning players Keith Royal and Andy Kulak. Kulak is known for his aggressive style of play- ing. The 1979-1980 team will be looking forward to the state tournament. Bun- nell will have its first chance in many years to make the states. Joy did well in the shot put, javelin and discus competitions. Most outstanding of all was member Bob Cowell. Bob broke the school’s high jump record on four different occasions. He also helped the team in the long and triple jumps. Team members Sue Goetz, Cathie Fuller, Dianna Shull, Donna Scott and Nancy Wellington also showed great determination. The statisticians for the season were Aimee Kreitler and Robin Reding. The team was held together by Coaches Jack Williams and assistant coach Mike Henetz. TENNIS The Boys’ Tennis Team was led to a successful record by Craig Waddington, who did not lose a MB1AC set or match during the .1977-1978 season. He finished the year number one in the MB1AC. Steve Kraus and Dave Dubuque were seeded numbers two and three, and showed some fine playing. The 1978-1979 season is even stronger with some fine returning players and new talent. The Racqueteers fought their way to a respectable eight to five 1977- 1978 season. Kathy Miller (Class of ’78) demonstrated excellent tennis. Miller, Beth Schiffer, Lynda Bruchansky (Class of ’78) and Cathy Bayus rounded out the top four spots with consistently good singles playing.
