Miller scored a touchdown with J. Holroyd catching a 2 point point conversion pass leading to an 8- 7 victory. Although the team record for the season was 6-4 it does not begin to show how well they played. The Bulldogs will be losing many out- standing players-Rich Cholewinski, Jeff Holroyd, Bob Tompkins, Jeff Miller, Greg Sperling, Paul Kalafus, John Manfredi, Harold MacDaniel, John Creevy, Bob Bou- dreau, and Jack Mudre - but look to next season as a successful one. This was due to good team spirit and long, hard practices. In addition, both varsity players and incoming sophomores contributed to the team's success. The highlight game of the season was the 1-0 win over rival Stratford High. Other victories included Platt Tech, Harding, Bassick and Bullard Havens. Leading the team were seniors. Bob Hunziker, Manny Marguy, John Rehm, and First team all MBIAC selections Brian Lavery and Phil Dato. Playing well were juniors Greg Caruso, Dan Neuberger and sophomores Nick Tsichlas, Mario Cris- tino and Steve Teeling. Next year the team is looking forward to a more suc- cessful season with many experienced players returning. no Best Season Yet Harriers Run Into Successful This year's cross country team fared well, with an overall record of 6 wins and 6 losses. Captain Dave Zie- towski led the team to two victories over cross-town rival Stratford, as well as defeating Kolbe - Cathedral, Harding, Bassick, and Mil- ford. John Tomasko and Dave Zietowski came in ninth and eleventh at the MBIAC's, held at Fairchild Wheeler golf course in Bridgeport. The top five runners then went on to the sectionals, held in Wolcott, CT. John Tomasko came in fourteenth, Dave Zietowski seventeenth, Jason Bellizzi sixty-eighth, Paul Kurzyna, eighty-first, and Paul Altieri ninety-sixth. Tomasko and Zeitowski qualified for the States and placed thirtieth and 125th respectively. With Tom Walther and Paul Altieri as co-captains for next year, the Harriers ex- pect a successful season. 132 1- P. Altieri 2- P. Kurzyna 3- J. Bellizzi 4- T. Walther 5- J. Tomasko 6- A. Lanz 7- D. Key player Bob Sobieraj averaged over 20 points per game and made All-MBIAC honorable mention. Leading rebounders were Sophomore Andy Kulak and junior Bob Jos- sick. Juniors Ron Nolting, Dave Dubuque, and sophomore Mark Sobieraj played well on offense. Other varsity team members were Seniors, Jack Mudre, and Dan Nemergut, Ju- niors, Tim Miller, Tim Aspinwall and Bob D'Louhy, and Sophomores, Jim Lepesko, and Keith Royal. Although the season was an up- hill battle for Bunnell, the Cagers have gained much experience which can improve next year's season. With wins against cross-town rival Strat- ford, Law, Ansonia, and league-leader Central, the team showed great improve- ment over last year. Leading the team in scoring were Judy Eckert and Captain Kathy Miller with averages of 4.7 and 4.6 points per match respectively. Teri Carilli also fared well serving 12 points against Stratford. Adding to the defense were Senior Diane Galya, Junior Joyce MacLennan, and showing great promise for next year were Sophomores Roberta Cascone, Bonnie De- Lorme, Janet Hromjak, and Debbie White. 137 Many Changes Seen Top Row: Patti Stoecklein, Manager, Janet Hromjak, Manager, Tracy Daly, Roberta Cascone, Robin Loughlin, Jackie Bike, Bill Shagnon, Assistant Coach. Of the starting players only two returned from last year. Although their record was 6 wins and 13 losses, this does not reflect the time and effort put in by the team. Returnee Sally Bike led the team with a 21 point average followed by Jackie Bike with an 11.6 average. Leading the team in rebounds was the other returning player Joyce Mac- Lennan with an average of 9 per game. Contributing greatly were Senior Kathy Miller and Sophomore Teri Carilli, and Sandy Fusco. Rounding out the team were Seniors Ann Cox, and Charlene Jeffers, Sophomores Leslie Zimmerman, and Marion Lynch. The main thrust of the Junior Varsity team was centered on Juniors Tracy Daly and Rob- in Loughlin and sophomore Gabrielle Rollf. 139 Swimmers Synchronize Strokes The win and loss re- cord of the Girls' Swim Team does not reflect the achievements of the individual swimmers. For example, the relay team of Lisa Cole, Ann Cox, Karen Peterson, and Sally Bike placed eleventh in the State Championship Competi- tion. The girls had a small squad and were led by returning seniors Ann Cox and Lisa Cole. The highlights of the season were the twin defeats of cross town rival, Stratford High School, posting the teams two wins. Although the swimmers finished their season with a 7 win, 8 loss record this fails to show that many of their losses were close ones. Captained by seniors John Creevy, Pat Skopp and junior Dan Neuberger, the Mermen swam consistently well. Outstanding swim- mers are: seniors, P.J. Mitchell, Dave Hoyt, John Creevy, and Pat Skopp, junior Dan Neuberger and sophomore Glen Kerpchar. Other members of the team include: seniors, Mike Guaglianone, Ken Hayward, and Mike VanGemert; Juniors, Paul Altieri, Doug Costa, Brett Plucinski, Rod Smith, Dave Giammattei, and Bob Barlow; and Sopho- mores , Ken Pfeiffer, John Gerte and Scott Robik. With its strong squad of juniors and sophomores, the swim team looks forward to a successful season in 1978-1979. Front Row: John Creevy, Dan Neuberger, Pat Skopp; Captains. Track 144 In Tennis Love Means Nothing 146 The Bunnell Raqueteers had an up and down season last year with a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. Ju- nior Beth Schiffer led the singles rally with an over- all record of 10 wins - 6 losses. Gail Barrett (Class of 77) and Senior Lynda Bruchansky combined to post a 9-5 tally in the doubles. Senior Kathy Miller and Beth Schiffer with their 8-1 record qualified for the state tournament and reached the third round. With returning members Kathy Miller, Lynda Bru- chansky, Beth Schiffer and solid sophomore talent the Raqueteers look toward a winning season. The Bunnell Boys tennis team ended their season with an excellent 4-3 record in MBIAC Play. Junior star Steven Kraus entered a nearly perfect 13-1 season in addition to being No. 1 in the MBIAC play- offs . With the returning Kraus, the team is looking forward to returning players Senior Dave Hoyt and Don Kaczvinsky. w w sX Upper left - Jack Williams Upper right - Steven Kraus Lower right - Lynda Bruchansky Clockwise: Beth Schiffer, David Hoyt, Lisa Mer- ritt, Don Kaczvinsky 147 Baseball And Softball Teams Jeff Holroyd Greg Sperling Gina Salerno Enjoy Victorious Seasons Baseball Softball The 1977 Bunnell Baseball team ended its season with a record of 8 wins and 10 losses. Starting out with 5 wins in the first 6 outings, the team went into a slump, but came out winning 3 of their last S. Jeff Holroyd and Ira Whaley received MBIAC Honorable Mention. The top batters were Ira Whaley and Jeff Miller, both averaging over .300. Returning to the team are Seniors Larry Cullen, Bob Tompkins, Jay Crory, Jack Mudre, Greg Sperling, Paul Aurelia, and Marvin DiCicco. New prospects from the J.V. Team include Tim Miller, Jeff Edo, Bob Barlow, Jeff Proudfoot, and Paul Altieri. Coach Jeziemy feels the team played reasonably well in 1977, and believes the 1978 team stands a good chance of making the state tournament. Ending the season with a record of 10 wins and 8 losses, the Blues once again qualified for the State Tournament. Getting off to a slow start, the Blues finally got things together midway through the sea- son winning 8 games out of 9. Leading the Blues were Cheri Dennis, Ann Cox, Jody Cologgi, Judy Eckert, and Sally Bike. Also playing well were Cheryl Hetten, Gina Sa - lemo, Cathy Sekelsky, Joyce MacLennen, and Cathy Zieff.
