Sandy Berkner GIRLS' SWIMMING Co-Captain Karen Jezierny and Coach Sue Dritenbas. Janet Delear BGVST Although the Girls Swim Team has been in existence for 3 years, this was the first year that Girls Swimming was acknowledged as a Varsity Sport. Despite the relative youth of the organization, the girls ended their season with a commend- able record of 7 wins and 4 losses. Captain Colleen Conley and Co-Captain Karen Jezierney led the mermaids, under the expert coaching of Sue Dritenbas. Both cap- tains were part of the 200 yd. medley relay also consisting of Sandy Berkner and Betsy Nemergut who now hold the Flood pool and Bunnell team record with a time of 2:12.4. Conley also holds team records in diving and as a part of the 200 yd Freestyle Relay team, while Jezierny holds the 2001M and 100 Fly team records Junior star Sandy Berkner holds team and pool records in the 50 and 100 yd. Frees- tyle events, team records in the 50 and 100 yd backstroke and was a part of both relay teams. The sophomores, led by Janet Delear, composed the bulk of the team. Janet scored 96 total points during the season and holds the team and pool record in the 50 Butterfly, the team record in the 200 Freestyle, besides completing the 200 yd Freestyle Relay team of Colleen Conley. Barb Stavola. Janet Delear and Sandy Berkner To guarantee a victory, a team should take a majority of first places, but many times a meet is decided on the second and third place points. Senior Kim Ross brought in valuable points in the 200 yd IM and 100 yd Backstroke, while junior Ann Zaveruha copped needed points in both the 50 and 100 yd. Backstroke events Sophomore Barb Stavola starred in the Freestyle events and Pam Green and Nancy Schneider competed in the 50 and 100 yd. Breastroke Sophomores Roberta Faust and Linda Milositz helped in the Butterfly events. Divers were Col- leen Conley. Denise Guaglianone. Janet Lengel. and Sherry Butler This year Bunnell competed in the state championships held at Southern Con- necticut State College. Bunnell placed 10th in the state with the freestyle relay team of Delear, Conley, Stavola. and Berkner placing 7th. Karen Jezierny placed 6th in the 200 yd IM and 10th in the 100 yd Butterfly, Sandy Berkner 5th in the 50 free and 8th in the 100 yd freestyle and Janet Delear took 9th place in the 200 yd freestyle Others competing in the States were Betsy Nemergut, Kim Ross. Pam Green, Ann Zaveruha. Nancy Schneider. Roberta Faust and Cindy Verrilli. The outlook for the 1974 Girls' Swim Team is good. Karen Jezierny will act as captain with Janet Delear as co-captain. Losing only four seniors to graduation, returning swimmers Berkner, Stavola. Faust and Nemergut should lead the team to another successful season. Maura Mitchell. Lynn Stravecky, Sherry Butler. Girls' sports are becoming a colorful part of Bunnell s scenery, and varsity basketball was no exception, as a group of athletic girls started off their season with great enthusiasm and gusto. Unfortunately, the season also started off with a misfortune when Captain Teri Russell hurt her knee in the first game against Central. Despite their hard luck, the team went on, led by Co-Captain Pat Weldon. High scorers were sophomore Lisa Dennis with a 14.0 average, junior Mary Jane Pruzinsky with a 13.3 average, and junior Laura Otzel with a 6.3 average. Mary Jane also managed to pull down the most rebounds with her long arms and quick moves. Other members of the team stayed with it and kept their enthusiasm all the way. The girls learned a great deal from their Coach Ms. Lea Dickson and from one another which led them to a good seasonal record of 4 wins and 6 losses. Many of.the girls will be playing again and are looking forward to an even better season next year.
