Beginning the season strongly, the team was then stunned by a tough one-point defeat from St. Joseph, and a hotly contested two-point loss to Stratford. However, mixed with the frustration there was accomplishment and signs of encouragement for next year. The season opened with injury as Senior Co-captain Donald Barnes was hurt in a practice session. Forced to do without their floor leader, the team scrambled in their open- ing games. Co-captain Mike Armstrong emerged from this situation as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Aiding Armstrong under the boards and in the scoring department were Seniors Bent Morrow, Pat Mallon, Phil Niedzwiecki, and John Marfiak. Another accomplished player was two year veteran Junior Bob Crichton. Crichton led a group of Juniors expecting to form the framework for next year's team. They include Gary Gilbert, Ezio Sabatino, Rich Buturla, Eric Olson, Mike Se- bas, Kerwin Lanz, and Dave Miller. Sophomore Jay Callahan showed poise in his limited Var- sity action this year. Callahan, a standout in Junior Varsity tilts, is expected to develop into a solid Varsity performer. Despite the relative youth of the organization, the girls ended their season with a commend- able record of 7 wins and 4 losses. Captain Colleen Conley and Co-Captain Karen Jezierney led the mermaids, under the expert coaching of Sue Dritenbas. Both cap- tains were part of the 200 yd. medley relay also consisting of Sandy Berkner and Betsy Nemergut who now hold the Flood pool and Bunnell team record with a time of 2:12.4. Conley also holds team records in diving and as a part of the 200 yd Freestyle Relay team, while Jezierny holds the 2001M and 100 Fly team records Junior star Sandy Berkner holds team and pool records in the 50 and 100 yd. Frees- tyle events, team records in the 50 and 100 yd backstroke and was a part of both relay teams. The sophomores, led by Janet Delear, composed the bulk of the team. Janet scored 96 total points during the season and holds the team and pool record in the 50 Butterfly, the team record in the 200 Freestyle, besides completing the 200 yd Freestyle Relay team of Colleen Conley. Barb Stavola. Janet Delear and Sandy Berkner To guarantee a victory, a team should take a majority of first places, but many times a meet is decided on the second and third place points. Senior Kim Ross brought in valuable points in the 200 yd IM and 100 yd Backstroke, while junior Ann Zaveruha copped needed points in both the 50 and 100 yd. Girls' sports are becoming a colorful part of Bunnell s scenery, and varsity basketball was no exception, as a group of athletic girls started off their season with great enthusiasm and gusto. Unfortunately, the season also started off with a misfortune when Captain Teri Russell hurt her knee in the first game against Central. Despite their hard luck, the team went on, led by Co-Captain Pat Weldon. High scorers were sophomore Lisa Dennis with a 14.0 average, junior Mary Jane Pruzinsky with a 13.3 average, and junior Laura Otzel with a 6.3 average. Mary Jane also managed to pull down the most rebounds with her long arms and quick moves. Other members of the team stayed with it and kept their enthusiasm all the way. The girls learned a great deal from their Coach Ms. Lea Dickson and from one another which led them to a good seasonal record of 4 wins and 6 losses. Laura Otzel Last year was the first year Bunnell of- fered a girls' varsity softball team. It was a beginning for many young girl athletes as well as for the coaches, Ms. Lea Dickson and Ms. Sue Ouellette. The girls practiced every day after school and on Sundays. Long hours of practice paid off with a record of 5 wins and 3 losses. Some of the team's power hitters, Mary Jane Pruzinsky and Pat Weldon, will be seen in action this spring. Fast pitcher Pat Feda is already warming up for the season. As a matter of fact, Barb Potasky, Liz Snow, Kathy Ouellette, Laura Otzel, Linda Otzel, Teri Russell, and Tami Lucas have been practicing all summer and getting pointers from the Raybestos Brakettes. Last season mistakes were made, correct- ed, and members learned to work together as a team. New members will be added, new experiences learned, and it is probable that the team will have a winning season this year. 130 Liz Snow Meg Sautter does it again Power hitter Pat Weldon slams another one. 131 BASEBALL '74 Bulldog Catcher Ed Morrisroe Last year's baseball team had its best year ever with a 13-5 record as it made the CIAC tourney for the first time. This year's squad has what it takes to carry on in the winning tradition. The team is very strong up the middle with strong hitters, experienced fielders, and pitchers with a lot of control. Also this year's squad can run, as it has many fine base runners. Returning veterans include seniors Bob Mc- Dermott (pitcher), John Buynak (pitcher), Ed Morrisroe (catcher), Phil Niedzwiecki (second base). Cliff Barone (third base), Harry Black (out- field), and junior Bob Crichton (shortstop). Third Baseman Cliff Barone Neil Dinihanian studies the pitcher. TRACK The Triple Jump Hurdlers The Managers Middle Distance Runners Last year's record-breaking se- niors provide tough footsteps for the 1974 track team to follow, but Coach Ed Butler has some strong material to work with, including MBIAC — champion pole-vaulter Dave Williams, weightman Kevin Bonaparte, high-jumpers Gary Gil- bert and Jeff Maco, and middle- distance men Kerwin Lanz and Doug Shull. The many experienced distance runners include Tom Drew, Billy Cambras, Mark Lov- ington, Joe Sullivan, and Harry Powers, while sprinters and hur- dlers are represented by Joe Ramos, Pat Hunter, Bob Cartiglia, Rich Skawinski, John Henry, and Jack McNamara. Of course, the as yet unproven underclassmen will pro- vide the real future for this team. Bob Cardellichio. Secretary. Pam Breault. 153 LAUREL Rita Klemman. The Laurel Staff, under the direction of its editors and advi- sors, Mrs. Kathryn Sherry and Miss Anna Hogan, has worked diligently all year in order to present to their classmates a true picture of the academic, athletic, and activity-filled Bunnell of 1973-74. 154 John Henry. Janet Harvilchuck, Pat Dubord, and Laurie Scharf. SENIOR COUNCIL The Senior Council is made up of thirty-two super seniors of '74 . Working together with the officers and advisor, Mr. Richard Fournier, they promote spirit within their class, plan for a successful senior prom, and that long awaited event — graduation. The girls of the Service Corps assist the office staff, reducing the load of typing and paper- work, and making their help greatly appreciated. SKI CLUB Each year a group of enthusiastic students prepare for a winter of skiing pleasure. The plans are made, ar- rangements are set, now all they have is prayer — a prayer for snow. Sometimes they wonder if it's worth all the preparation — skis, boots, three layers of clothes. But after one trip down the mountain, one realizes that it was all worth the trouble, and well worth repeating, because it's a freedom only a skier can know. Advisor. Mr. William Fisk. President.
