John P. Banvard Dramatics and Speech Arts DRAMA The Department of Dramatics and Speech Arts includes courses in Fundamentals of oral communication with emphasis upon the develop- ment of poise and self-confidence, clear thinking and effectiveness in speaking. An introductory study of the art and aesthetics of the theatre, including an elementary consideration of the various styles of theatrical production, drama, and playwriting is presented. Emphasis is placed on a better under- standing of the social, cultural, and aesthetic significance of theatre. Business and Professional Speech, Acting, Radio and Television, and Oral Interpretation provide practical experience in reading to others, story telling, choral reading and preparing programs. This department at Frank Phillips College presents a wide variety of entertainment, appealing to both youth and adults. The first program of the 1967-68 season was COFFEE HOUSE, pro- duced hy and for youth. A play, THE LOTTERY, was presented along with poetry reading, and both folk and modern music. Candle light and attractive refreshments added to the gaiety of the evening. Mary Hinton and Gloria Prince study lines for THE LOTTERY.
