Shotgun PIRAZ For nearly thirty days during the latter part of February and most of March we were assigned shotgun duty first for the USS Sterrett CDLG-315 and then the USS Chicago CCAG-llj. Both of these guided missle ships acted as duty ship for PIRAZ. After a month nearly everyone had learned that PIRAZ meant Positive Identification Radar Advisory Zone Our job was to accompany them and provide protection against enemy surface threats which their missles could not counter Between investiga- tions of transiting Russian freighters and searching overcast skies for a ray of sun we thrilled to the daily euphonics of mail call Riding shot gun for the Chicago Carrier OPS PLANEGUARD After being rudely withdrawn from I-long Kong on short notice we began following the USS Kitty Hawk CCVA-635 perform- ing as rescue destroyer for her The weather was a vast improvement over PIRAZ and daily air ops followed by nightly unreps soon became the routine Most of the free time was spent speculating what our next change would Mail and men via Helo.
