Gallant VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach Comwell is sharing a final handshake with Larry Gongwer and Bob Gallant The Willis varsity basketball team, coached by Del Cornwell, defeated live of nine non- league opponents, but was unable to Win in the C.B.L. It was a young team which promises to be much better next season. Only two letter- men will graduate this year, Bob Gallant and Lary Congwer. The returning squad includes Tom Rybolt, class of '59, and Arnold Boecklin, Henry Banks, Ken Bensley, Sam Buzard and Roy Clark, all class of ,60. Top individual varsity scorers were Rybolt with 178 points, Clark with 175, and Gongwer with 172. The Willis reserves, coached by Dave Thomas, gave promise of a brighter future for Panther basketball. Although shorter than most of their opponents, they made up for their lack of height With spirit.

Slagle CHEERLEADERS With the help of Willie, the Panther, the twelve Willis cheerleaders led the high school in promoting increased school spirit. The girls were always on hand to give moral support to the team and crowd. Each spring, the D-Clan, student council, football and basketball teams, senior varsity cheerleaders, and faculty members elect twelve cheerleaders for the following year. This year the varsity cheerleaders, a group of three juniors and three seniors, were led by captain Linda Carlisle and co-captain Phyllis Rayburn. They cheered for varsity football and basketball games, planned pep assemblies, sold tickets, and sponsored dances after some games. The girls also attended a cheerleading clinic in the early fall. Vickie Roberts, captain, and jean Burkhart, co-captain, were the leaders of the six sophomores on the reserve squad. The girls, besides cheering for games and pep assemblies, made posters and pom-poms which added a great deal to school support of the team.
