Hahn SULTAN S OF SWING The Sultans of Swing dance band was one of the busiest musical organizations at Willis, playing many engagements throughout the central part of Ohio. This dance band, the I-irst at Willis since 1945, was organized in 1956 by a group of boys interested in furthering their music experience. The original band consisted of seven mem- bers, but was later enlarged to nine members. The band has been run completely by its members, who finance all of its equipment and music from the money they earn playing for various functions. The members also purchase white dinner jackets with the band's earnings. In addition to playing many outside engagements, the band has also become a familiar sound around Willis. The Sultans have played at many of the large dances at Willis and have taken part in assemblies and other school functions. Don Shaw was chosen as leader of the band and has acted as executive and business manager for the band since its origin. 7l

Cames ILLIS HIGH The Willis High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Eugene Ross and assistant Mr. Kenneth jenkins, consisted of 95 members this year. The band took part in many activities of which the school and community can be proud. ' The marching band marched at the football games during the nine Weeks of football season. The pre-game and half-time shows the band presented were planned by the seniors of the band. Every day the band spent one hour at Community Field preparing for the coming game, often in cold and snowy weather. ' ' The marching band wore the traditional orange and black uniforms with white accessories. The band was lead by eight high strutting majorettes, who also had a new routine each Week. The last show presented by the marching band was a farewell salute to the seniors in the band. The band took the seniors on a tour of America featuring a formation and special music for each region of America. The final formation was a pennant and as the senioris names were read they formed a Wu inside the pennant.
