ARTS AND SKILLS-These arts help us to enjoy the World around us . . . 42 Art is a course which helps the student express his feelings and ideas through painting, ceramics, carving, leather craft, Hgure drawing, metal enameling, stencil- ing, design, printing, three-dimensional Work, and textile decoration. It gives the student a means by which he may communicate these ideas to others as well as himself. Mrs. Patingale instructs the combined class of beginning and advanced students. Home Economics is a four-year elec- tive course for senior high girls. The class deals with four major areas, cloth- ing, foods, home furnishing, and family relations. The girls are required to do three projects in their freshman year and four per year as upperclassmeng these must be related to their classwork. In the senior year, girls stress the man- agement of time and money in prepara- tion for their role as future homemakers. Mrs. Hulbert and Mrs. Jones instruct the six classes. The various vocal groups at Willis give the student an opportunity to use and improve his musical ability. The group pictured here is a junior high music class, where students learn the fundamentals of good singing, such as correct posture, breathing, phrasing, and pronunciation. In senior high, the stu- dent must demonstrate his vocal ability in order to become a member of the Senior High Chorus Girls, Glee Club, and Senior High Choir.

and here, from an earthworm to the conquest of outer space. Physics is the most advanced science course offered at Willis High School. The class deals with energy and matter in several different phases: heat, light, sound, mechanics, and electricity. The students performed experiments, saw films, and took trips to add to their knowledge of this subject. This class, as well as the other science courses, helped students in their projects work. Mr. Slasor taught this classL Chemistry is the first of the higher sciences taught at Willis and deals with the composition of matter. Mr. Slasor,s valuable personal information creates both a stimulating atmosphere for chem- istry. This year, a great many of the chemistry students have spent hours delving into the vast unknown and com- ing up with fascinating projects. Even if a student is not planning a career in science, chemistry provides an under- standing necessary for successful living. The freshmen who take the biology course offered at Willis 'rind that they receive a. solid background for the higher science courses that will con- front them in both high school and col- lege. The work on individual projects allowed students to understand exten- sively a specific area of the subject. The general study of the human body left the student with valuable knowledge of a complicated organism. Biology is definitely an addition to the basis for a well-rounded education.

Industrial Arts include many various kinds of work. This picture shows ninth grade class working on mechanical drawing. This class spends one semester on mechanical drawing and another on printing and house wiring. This fresh- man course gives the ninth-grader a solid background for future work in the woodworking and metal laboratories. This class is conducted by Mr. Bowman. Woodshop and Metal Shop are the two laboratories where sophomores, juniors, and seniors continue their work in the field of industrial arts. This pic- ture shows a group working in the wood- shop. Other areas of study include plas- tic, electric and gas welding, sheet metal, and machines. This wide range of study gives the students ample opportunity to choose an occupation. These courses are under the supervision of Mr. Bow- man. Business Education is a course of study which includes typing, bookkeep- ing, shorthand, oilice practice, business English, and commercial mathematics. The picture shows a class in typing, one of the important areas in the business field. It is recommended that all students have some knowledge about the various aspects of this course because business is a vital part of our world. Teachers in the field of Business Education are Miss Bepson, Miss McCarley, and Miss Bus- se .
