MATH AND SCIENCE - Here our studies everything from classvvork to operettas 1 40 Advanced math consists of trigonom- etry, solid geometry, and algebra II and III. The class pictured is a senior trigo- nometry one. Mr. Felts presents the ma- terial in a unique manner, and his success is made obvious by the genuine interest shown by all of his students. From constructing miniature geometric figures to studying the various aspects of the plane triangle, Willis math students ob- tain a basic knowledge of the important mathematical processes. Plane geometry is a course offered in the sophomore year, which deals with two dimensional figures. The students learn about parallel lines, axioms and postulates, analytic and synthetic proof, and the various geometric figures. The class, along with the algebra I course offered in the freshman year, gives the student a solid foundation for the ad- vanced math courses. Mr. Felts is head of the mathematics department, and in- structs this class. Mr. Dave Thomas is pictured instruct- ing one of three classes in the general study of mathematics. This course covers many aspects af arithmetic which are essential to the general knowledge of todayis students. Students practice the four basic phases of math -- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also learn to apply these steps to realistic problems of everyday life.

and also the languages of other countries. Latin is a two year course under the direction of Mrs.,Evans. The I-irst year is devoted primarily to the study of grammar, While the second year is con- cerned mainly with translation. Both classes learn a great deal about the Roman and Greek culture and myth- ology. In April, the classes held a Feast of the Boundaries, complete with tunics, togas, and slaves,v selected from the Hrst year students. French is a two-year course taught by Miss Bussard. As in other language courses, French does not deal with gram- mar alone, but is also concerned with the people and customs of France. The students are given the opportunity to join the French Clubs and thus add to their knowledge of the land and the language. There are three classes in this subject. Spanish, like the other two foreign languages oHered at Willis, is a two- year course. Miss Bussard also instructs this subject, and she has two Spanish classes in addition to the three French groups. Students studying in this field may join the Spanish Clubs, and thus put to use their knowledge of the language and life of Spain.

and here, from an earthworm to the conquest of outer space. Physics is the most advanced science course offered at Willis High School. The class deals with energy and matter in several different phases: heat, light, sound, mechanics, and electricity. The students performed experiments, saw films, and took trips to add to their knowledge of this subject. This class, as well as the other science courses, helped students in their projects work. Mr. Slasor taught this classL Chemistry is the first of the higher sciences taught at Willis and deals with the composition of matter. Mr. Slasor,s valuable personal information creates both a stimulating atmosphere for chem- istry. This year, a great many of the chemistry students have spent hours delving into the vast unknown and com- ing up with fascinating projects. Even if a student is not planning a career in science, chemistry provides an under- standing necessary for successful living. The freshmen who take the biology course offered at Willis 'rind that they receive a. solid background for the higher science courses that will con- front them in both high school and col- lege. The work on individual projects allowed students to understand exten- sively a specific area of the subject. The general study of the human body left the student with valuable knowledge of a complicated organism. Biology is definitely an addition to the basis for a well-rounded education.
