Senior English is a college preparatory course which deals with English lan- guage and literature. This year, the first semester was devoted to the language and its applications, including the annual research paper. The second semester dealt with the great Writers of England and their works. Under the direction of Miss VVhitted, the students are provided with a solid background for future college require- ments. Miss Whitted was assisted by Mrs. Reed, director of class Work for the Gazette High School Page. Business English is a course offered to students who plan to go into business or secretarial work. As in other English classes, the pupils learn the various parts of speech and types of sentence struc- ture. In addition to this, they learn to apply these forms of grammar by Writing business letters. Miss McCarley in- structed the Business English Class this year. One of the required courses for fresh- men is English. This class provides them with the firm foundation in our language that will be invaluable in every other high school course. These freshmen learn how greatly their command of English can influence their future plans from reciting poetry to doing special projects on material read, variety in the freshman English class prepares the newcomers for what lies ahead.

and also the languages of other countries. Latin is a two year course under the direction of Mrs.,Evans. The I-irst year is devoted primarily to the study of grammar, While the second year is con- cerned mainly with translation. Both classes learn a great deal about the Roman and Greek culture and myth- ology. In April, the classes held a Feast of the Boundaries, complete with tunics, togas, and slaves,v selected from the Hrst year students. French is a two-year course taught by Miss Bussard. As in other language courses, French does not deal with gram- mar alone, but is also concerned with the people and customs of France. The students are given the opportunity to join the French Clubs and thus add to their knowledge of the land and the language. There are three classes in this subject. Spanish, like the other two foreign languages oHered at Willis, is a two- year course. Miss Bussard also instructs this subject, and she has two Spanish classes in addition to the three French groups. Students studying in this field may join the Spanish Clubs, and thus put to use their knowledge of the language and life of Spain.
