Kellogg student wins state title as horseshoe throwing champ By PEGGY McELIN GISLASON Staff Writer Kellogg High School can claim only one horseshoe thrower in its student body. But that one student has made the top of the state horseshoe charts. Chris White, 2224 McMenemy St., Maplewood, beat the state champion in the junior division at a state tournament in Genola, Minn., over Labor Day weekend. Not only is he now the reigning state champ, but he may have set a worldis record for a junior scoring in a state tourna- ment. He won all of the seven playoff games, with an average of 88.5 ringers per 100 shoes tossed. In the showdown with the former champ from Duluth, White threw 29 ring- ers out of 30 tosses - an almost perfect score. White last week displayed obvi- ous pleasure in having achieved a longstanding goal, for which he has worked long and hard. For five years now, the Kellogg junior has been diligently practicing tossing shoes an average of two hours per day. His ambition has taken him to many a local, state and even world tournaments. In 1980, he came close to fame, placing third in the world tournament. But his victory last week was the high point of his horseshoe career. Winning the Minnesota championship was no small potatoes, according to White, because the local competition is some of the best in the world. In fact, this summer Minnesotans took the world's championships for the men's, ladies, and girls' divisions. White is sorry that he did not compete in that tournament, because he thinks he could have given the state a fourth 1983 world champion. Although many of the world tournaments are based in the 38 south, White said many horseshoe throwers live in the Midwest. 'fMinnesota has a large membership Cin the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, he said. And local horseshoe throwers are trying to build Minnesotais reputation as a strong horseshoe state. The three world championships this year may have done a lot to boost that reputation, he added. WHITE SAID his involvement in the sport began five years ago, when he was age 11. The incentive, he said, was his horse- shoe-loving father, Roger White. His father has been an avid horseshoe thrower for years, and has picked up many a trophy along the way. Even Chris Whiteis mother, Betty White, took up the sport and participates in tourna- ments. Horseshoe throwing tends to run in families, she said, noting the number of families participating at the state tournament. But despite the family connec- tion, White said he enjoys horse- shoe throwing because itis an in- dividual sportf' Besides, he said, Ijust like to play, and I'm good at it.
