The The 1983 soccer season was the year of the shutout. A record of nine wins, two losses, and three ties included eight shu- touts. Unfortunately, two of these were 0-0 ties. The team played a classy, ball-control style contrary to the kick-and-run style of many opponents. The high point of the season was a 4-0 victory over seventh ranked Coon-Rapids followed by a defeat ., m.Q'7 2 - Jeff Uenishi, John Scalze, Kurt Orenstein Kellogg trying for another shutout. 180 VARSITY SCORES WE THEY Bloomington Jefferson l l Spring Lake Park 3 0 Blaine 2 1 Columbia Heights 3 0 Anoka 2 l Moundsview l 2 Irondale 0 0 Blaine 0 0 Columbia Heights 2 0 Spring Lake Park 2 0 Coon Rapids 4 O Ramsey I 0 White Bear Lake 3 1 North St. Paul l 2 of arch-rival Ramsey. A Standout Season Kellogg girls tennis had a standout sea- son. With seven seniors, they had strong leadership and experience. Their quality of play and confidence grew through the sea- son as they compiled a 4-5 Conference re- cord and a 7-6 overall season record. Dur- ing region play their hard training paid off great dividends as the team swept through to the finals without losing a match. The team earned Region III runnerup honors as they lost to Ramsey in a close 2-3 Finals. Not to be denied, they entered the region individual tournament and played their best tennis of the year. Kathy Kaiser com- pleted her senior year by stroking her way to the Region III championship. Arleen Bartels and Sharon Oelke combined to form the Region's top doubles team. Kel- logg's second doubles team, of Karen Ry- lander and Melissa Riach, defeated ranked teams to bring an exciting finals match of Kellogg playing Kellogg. They'll be back next year to show their state level play to Kellogg's competition. All in all the 1983 girl's tennis season more than fulfilled the team's hopes and dreams as an exciting time of friendship, sportsmanship, and competition.
