ENGLISH DEPARTMENT In addition to its required courses this year, the English Department offered several new programs. One such was the senior extra-honors class, designed to expose students to the types of literature found on the college level. Another innovation this year was the class in contemporary drama. As in the past, excellent courses were available in journalism and creative writing. Mr. Lodato, chairman of the department, feels that such programs as these have helped to broaden the interests of our students. FIRST ROW E. Jaffa, H. Rosenberg, M. Butti, A. Lodato, Chairman, M. The controversial Issue of the Month column, unique in high school journalism, was carriecl each month, touching on such school topics as a Lewis football team, and expressing views on contemporary problems like the Civilian Review Board. Once again, the Patriot en- tered the Columbia Scholastic Press Contest and won a first prize rating. The Patriot played well the role of spokesman for intellectual and educational freedom at Lewis.
