Gary Kitchens looks on, one of the few Reitz teams to go undefeated during the regular season in many years. With such state contenders as Jasper, Boonville, and Harrison in their sectional, the team knew they had their work cut out for them to even win the sectional. After recording an impressive win over Vincennes Lincoln i40-0i in the first round, Reitz was faced with battling 9W Jasper. Jasper was definitely hungry for revenge after losing 21-2 to Reitz last year in the sectional championship. After almost 3V2 quarters of a heated defensive battle, Jasper was able to kick a 36 yard field goal with 43 seconds left to win 10-7. For the second year in a row, Reitz had been beaten on the last second play in the playoffs. 0 a pileup as Coach Bill Hape: I feel the 4H ranking this year was a tribute to the kids for all their hard work; we had a great season and had nothing to be ashamed of. Reserves, Frosh Follow Footsteps Following in the footsteps of the varsity, the Reitz reserve football team captured the City title. In fact, it was the second year in a row the Reserves have won City. Both years the Panthers were coached by former Reitz all-state player Mike Horn. Coach Horn has lost but two games since he took the job as reserve football coach. The only loss this year came from Castle. The City champions finished their season with a 6-1 record, The team worked hard tOgether and had good leadership. If the Panthers keep playing as they did this year they will develop into a good varsity team. The Panthers leading scorer on the team was Scott Johnston. Johnston finished the year with 16 touchdowns, while Phil Niemeier added by kicking 24 more points. Team captains for the Panthers were Nick Schnarr and Brian Hape. Football 80 freshman football team proved they could play with any team in the city according to Head Coach Gene Backes. Losing two of their three games by a narrow margin, the freshman footballers could have been 7-1 just as easy as 4-3. The intelligent and versatile panthers worked hard to prepare for vasity action in future years. Playing at least 30 or more players a game, the freshman team will also be an experienced sophomore class next year. Co-Captains of the team John Tucker of the defense and Chris Payne who led the Panthers in all offensive categories plan to carry their leadership in years to come. Coach Backes said, This year's team was a very enjoyable group of young men, very intelligent team, with a lot of promise for the future. Head Coach Mike Horn looks on in d concentration. eep
