ll Winning Tradition Returns The varsity football season started CaStIE; thelbattle 0f the . defegise only anowed Castle to reach out this year with some very high undefeated 5. Castle was 9th 1n midaeld once in the game. Still hopes. With close to 18 returning Class 5A and the Panthers had staymg at 4661 m the state, the lettermen coming back from a team climbed to 4H 1n Ciass 4A. Before panthers went on to post Wins OVer that went all the way to the regional almost 13,000 fans in the bowl, North, Bosse, and Central by SCOres last year, goals of winning a state Reitz definitely provedthey were a of .35-0, 34-0, and 20-13, resPeCtivel team to be reckoned w1th by Wlth the Victory over Central, Reitz- championship were set. Unfortunately, the dream fell short. On the other hand, some very great , things happened this year for the - ,. 1W Panthers. V V w , Reitz went to New Albany on August 31 ranked tenth in the state. After causing numerous turnovers on defense and making several big plays offensively, the footballers embarrassed the Bulldogs 51-0. That next week, Reitz moved to 6th in the state and prepared to take on Memorial. The defense allowed less than 100 yards total offense in the game and Reitz came away with a 33-0 win. After just two games, the team was one of the few in Southern Indiana to be undefeated and unscored on. Being ranked 4952 in the state the next week, Reitz again prevailed 24-7 over Harrison before almost 8,000 fans in the bowl. Still remaining 51752 in the state, the Panthers defeated westside rival Mater Dei 35-6 and brought the Westside Traveling Trophy back on the hill. captured the City and SIAC Senior Greg Ashby is tackled by a North de- Senior Jeff Neisz sticks his headint championship and succeeded to be fender after hauling down a jump pass. Gary Kitchens looks on, one of the few Reitz teams to go undefeated during the regular season in many years. With such state contenders as Jasper, Boonville, and Harrison in their sectional, the team knew they had their work cut out for them to even win the sectional. After recording an impressive win over Vincennes Lincoln i40-0i in the first round, Reitz was faced with battling 9W Jasper. Jasper was definitely hungry for revenge after losing 21-2 to Reitz last year in the sectional championship. After almost 3V2 quarters of a heated defensive battle, Jasper was able to kick a 36 yard field goal with 43 seconds left to win 10-7. For the second year in a row, Reitz had been beaten on the last second play in the playoffs. 0 a pileup as Coach Bill Hape: I feel the 4H ranking this year was a tribute to the kids for all their hard work; we had a great season and had nothing to be ashamed of.
