As they filed out of the room, they breathed a sigh of relief for just missing the surprise quiz on What's under the hood. But, when they walked out the door to the park- ing lot and saw Mr. Henry waiting in the car, panic stuck. Palms were sweaty, upper lips had perspiration beading up on them. And to think, this was even before getting in the car. Just described is a typical day in a Driver's Ed. class. Class begins with three students called to drive. In oth- er words, every day there are three additional hazards on our roads. In- experienced, they attempt to conquer the path ways that we depend on daily. The main lesson taught in the course is that driving is a privilege. Although it is a privilege for many, this privilege is often abused by oth- ers; as seen when surveying the stu- dent parking lot and seeing students doing burn-outs . From the parking lot, they are tak- en to the range. The majority of stu- dents cross their fingers, hold their breath, and whatever else they can think of so that they aren't chosen to drive first. But, as luck - and the instructor - may have it, one stu- dent is picked. Take the car to Blue Street, directs Mr. Henry. As if a gun was being held to their head, blankness fills their mind. They can't seem to be able to remember PHOMORES SOPHOMORES -' where the street is located. All of the pavement markings show either a street or something of importance and from the driver's seat, it would seem that deciphering chemistry notes was less difficult. Aside from the anxiety that strikes most beginning drivers, the experi- ence of a Driver's Education class is tremendous. From building courage, to learning the basics, to accepting a failed test here and there, a Driver's Ed. class helps a person become more mature in many ways. And for the clincher, as of the last days of the semester, beware Evansville pedes- trians - the new drivers will be out there. tAmy HerteD
