But, this isn't just any Other dayr it's the firSt day Of A mad rush to class started the new year. school. The halls are lined with people catching up on the summer's events with their friends, looking at each other's schedules, seeing which lunch periods their friends have, or trying to figure out where their classrooms are. At a glance anyone can tell who the rookies and the veterans are. The rookies are usually walking around with a confused look on their faces, and at the same time trying to look as if they know what they are doing. Rookies always make sure they are on time for each and every class. The veterans prefer to casually stroll into class right as the bell is ringing. The first day of school means different things to everyone. For some it means the joy of seeing old friends again. Others may see it as the loss of free time and the beginning of getting up early and of adding homework. No matter how people feel about the first day, it is something we look forward to. By Stephanie Strieter Candy Cain took a break to look ahead. Standing in the coke line, David Hamm displayed another talent. Back To School 4 Patty Carter looks for a place to sit after paying for her lunch. Debbie Tieken and Amy Burkdoll were surprised as their beaker boiled over in chemistry lab. Dee Dee Weese took her turn to demonstrate in Mr. Brumley's class. With winning teams, the students were motivated to cheer at the assemblies. Students got more involved by helping to plan the pep assemblies and appearing in the skits. We'll remember those pep assemblies as being Back on Top Juniors prove just how loud they can get. Reitz cheerleaders get the crowd going during a pep assembly. Coach Bill Hape gives one of his pep talks before the Castle game. The scores were shown at a pep assembly for the North game. Pep 8 Kendall Cummings feels the humor in a skit. Rising to the occasion is the sophomore section. . . . and the join in for the school song. Reporting to the next period is the bad part of a pep session. Pep 9 Bonding What would it be like without friends? Pretty dull. There would be no one to share secrets with. No one to experience the good times and, more importantly, the bad times. Where would we ask advice and endless other things? At Reitz, there are many bonds of friendship. We each have a special friend or friends that make our high school years memorable and bearable. We gain and lose friends over time. Marlene Vonderahe, a senior, explained, Many of my friends when I was a freshman developed other interests. We are still friendly, but not as close. A best friend has qualities that make them more special than our other friends. Laura Barchet, a junior, says, A best friend is always there when you need them and they can be trusted to keep personal conversations personal. When freshmen enter high school they lose many friends because some move away or others attend different schools. Nevertheless, many more new friends are made almost immediately. Not only are the bonds between students at Reitz. But it includes the surrounding community. Sports events and graduation are attended not only by parents and relatives, but by many Westsiders who just want to share old friendships and want to be near the old school spirit. At graduation when the Reitz graduates in the audience are asked to stand, almost no one remains seated. The warmth of friendship is a wonderful feeling and gives us a sense of direction in life. Let's be thankful for the friends who share our high school years; the memories ofe their friendship will last forever. Debbie Guetling You know you have a true friend when they agree to eat in the school cafeteria with you. A great place to meet friends is in the front hall by the Coke machine. These three friends risk their lives by sitting on the main staircase to do their homework. A true friend will sit outside the office with you when you have an appointment with Mr. Higgs. Friends 10 John Damm, David Angle, and Brent Carver enjoy singing together. Freshman boys sit out front and watch the girls go by. Friendship means . . . posing for the photographer whenever possible. Kim Overfield worries that she will have to plan another pep assembly. wwxv Mw$Rxka Friends 11 Homecoming: Homecoming 12. It Was Perfect After defeating North 35-0, approximately 200 couples attended the Homecoming dance. This year's theme song was Heaven in Your Eyes and the decorations were in the school colors. The Homecoming Royalty was announced before the game and consisted of: Prince -- Bobby Swallows, Princess - Jane Mulherin, King - Ken Hansen, and Queen a Kim Overfield. Many believed that this was the best Homecoming Reitz has had in years. As Heather Layden stated It was perfect. Our football team won the decoration were blue and grey I and we had a popular theme song What impressed me the most . though, was the attendence at the dance. As they filed out of the room, they breathed a sigh of relief for just missing the surprise quiz on What's under the hood. But, when they walked out the door to the park- ing lot and saw Mr. Henry waiting in the car, panic stuck. Palms were sweaty, upper lips had perspiration beading up on them. And to think, this was even before getting in the car. Just described is a typical day in a Driver's Ed. class. Class begins with three students called to drive. In oth- er words, every day there are three additional hazards on our roads. In- experienced, they attempt to conquer the path ways that we depend on daily. The main lesson taught in the course is that driving is a privilege. Although it is a privilege for many, this privilege is often abused by oth- ers; as seen when surveying the stu- dent parking lot and seeing students doing burn-outs . From the parking lot, they are tak- en to the range. The majority of stu- dents cross their fingers, hold their breath, and whatever else they can think of so that they aren't chosen to drive first. But, as luck - and the instructor - may have it, one stu- dent is picked. Take the car to Blue Street, directs Mr. Henry. As if a gun was being held to their head, blankness fills their mind. They can't seem to be able to remember PHOMORES SOPHOMORES -' where the street is located. All of the pavement markings show either a street or something of importance and from the driver's seat, it would seem that deciphering chemistry notes was less difficult. Aside from the anxiety that strikes most beginning drivers, the experi- ence of a Driver's Education class is tremendous. From building courage, to learning the basics, to accepting a failed test here and there, a Driver's Ed. class helps a person become more mature in many ways. And for the clincher, as of the last days of the semester, beware Evansville pedes- trians - the new drivers will be out there. tAmy HerteD Richard Hill Nicholle Holt Travas Hoover Sherrill Hopple Catherine Houpt Lisa Hudnall Jennifer Hudson Melinda Hunsaker Jasson Hurt Brent J ackson Sheela Jaisinghani Jean Paul James Brett Jarboe Jeffrey Jessee Wesley Johann Charles Johnson Patrick Johnson Scott Johnston Joey Jones Trent Jourdan Terrell Joyce Kyle Kassel Danny Keller Mark Keller Sean Kello James Kestler Ericka King Delana Kirby Melissa Knight Kristine Koewler Kraig Kolb Sabrina Krizek Julie Kuebler Cindy Kuester Gabriel Lamar Robert Lawson Gregory Lefler Kevin Leonard Jennifer Leroy Sandra Lester Christopher Lilly Christopher Lindenberg Cynthia Longest Jill Lucas Cathy Mann Richard Marksberry Jim Mattingly Stephen May Benjamin McCarthy Maeve McConville Nusha McDaniel Shane McFadden James McGehee Kristen McGill Susan McGregor Kimberly McIntosh Sophomores 49 Sophomores Bradley McVey Michael Meeks Daniel Mercer Alicia Minton John Moehlenkamp Teri Momon Robin Mortis Shari Mossberger Ted Mueller Donna Mullen Michael Murray David Myers Rebecca Myers , Deboran Neighbors Paul Niemeir Philip Niemeir Kristen Oates Mary O'Conner Matthew Orshovsky Krista Overfield Matthew Owen Mitchell Paddock Gregory Palmer Thomas Paul Karen Petranek Melody Pfender Matthew Pfister Lionel Phelps Jeffrey Pickett Bobby Potts Loaraine Powers Tina Price Raymond Pruett Kristin Quakkelaar Joseph Quick Jennifer Rainey David Rakestraw Brook Ranes Heather Reed Teresa Reisz Stephanie Reiter 50 oanne Wim leber and Kevin Seidhame Jones walks by. They perform at banquets, conventions, churches, and their own major concerts. They sing a wide vari- ety of music, from pop to classical. Officers for the choir, which were Chosen only by the Concert Choir members, include President Joeli Sta- ley, Vice President Barbara Owens, Secretary Andy Hubbard, and Trea- surer Susan Patton. Sounds of the Hill is a small group chosen from the Concert Choir. They are selected by a singing and dancing audition. Their primary purpose is to perform at times and places that are not practical for the whole Concert Choir. Sounds performed at the Germnia Manneichor Madry this year. By performing half-time routines during football, basketball games and at pep assemblies the Hilltoppers have not only added color and pep but school spirit to the student body. The Hilltopper girls started early last summer getting ready for the upcoming season. By attending a dance and cheerleading camp, at Western Kentucky University the girls learned many new routines to perform for school activities. By selling candy, balloons and participating in a car wash the dance group earned enough money to buy uniforms and dance equipment. This years sixteen member team is lead by captain Laura McCullagh and by co-captain Tracy Babbs. Hilltoppers show in their routines that Reitz is 1751. After causing numerous turnovers on defense and making several big plays offensively, the footballers embarrassed the Bulldogs 51-0. That next week, Reitz moved to 6th in the state and prepared to take on Memorial. The defense allowed less than 100 yards total offense in the game and Reitz came away with a 33-0 win. After just two games, the team was one of the few in Southern Indiana to be undefeated and unscored on. Being ranked 4952 in the state the next week, Reitz again prevailed 24-7 over Harrison before almost 8,000 fans in the bowl. Still remaining 51752 in the state, the Panthers defeated westside rival Mater Dei 35-6 and brought the Westside Traveling Trophy back on the hill. Art Draws Us To The Top Many people get their creative juices flowing in the several art classes offered. This creativity, however, poses controversial questions. Should creativity be graded? How is the abstract concept graded? Students who bring a project, whether it be a painting or wood sculpture, form a mere visualization in the mind into a tangible object usually views the object as quite worth an A grade. But, when it is presented to the teacher for approval, the teacher sometimes grades it lower. Who's right? Clint Wiethop, senior, said, Art you can't grade because it is in your opinion of what is good and what is not. Obviously in a classroom situation it must be graded. The teachers decide how it is to be graded. Mr. Kneise grades on originality and creativity. If a question arises as to what the student tried to put across in the work, I'd probably discuss it with them, he said. Mr. Hickrod considers many facets when he grades: My evaulations are based upon design, quality, craftsmanship, and creativity. Should the teacher's own views go in the grade? Senior Dave Armitage said, I think they should grade on craftsmanship, but also put their opinion in it. I guess they knowlwhat's good and bad from experience. tKim Ashleyi Tyrone Pollard looks on while Travis Ray shapes a ceramic bowl. Certain people were in charge of the different sections in the yearbook whether it was academics, sports, organizations, or the album. The funding for this years' year- book came through advertisements and a budget given to the staff by the school. The big difference in this years' staff is that they were able to meet every deadline given to them, thus resulting in an award winning book. The yearbook one of the factors that keeps the pride alive at Reitz. by Stephanie Knapp I Many yearbook staff members attended workshops this year to help improve the yearbook. The 1986-87 Reitz Reflections staff hams it up for the camera. Front row: Carrie Garnett, Kirk ' i Sonia K ' h ' ll , S d : Cher l Holder, Marlene Vonderahe, Debbie Goetling, . . . . . Mirror Goals Editor-in-Chief Rick Davis puts the finishing touches on one of his stories. Achieved New and improved. Those are the two adjectives this years' newspaper, the Mirror, set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year. The year started offearly for the Mirror staff. Their first edition came out on the third day of school, and is believed to be the earliest Reitz newspaper publication that has ever been published for a first edition. The paper also opted for a new size this year. Changing the paper from an 11 by 14 size, the paper reduced itself to an 8V2 by 11 paper. The nameplate also encountered a change. The new staff was also credited by producing the largest newspaper ever . . . 12 pages! The changes first started three weeks before school started. The editors, along with Mr. Aurand, began assigning, typing, and editing stories. The best part of this year's successes is that next year, Reitz will have a better newspaper, as it strives to make itself the best and help to shoot Reitz back to the top. by Rick Davis Robby Grubbs serves as typesetter for this The Mirror staff: years' Mirror staff.
