Home- coming tickets had been on sale for three days and only that many tickets had been sold. Three couples were to attend the dance. By Friday, late buyers swamped members for tickets. Lines formed down the halls, students were late to class and money was rolling in. At last. The last ticket was sold by 10:45 with approximately fifty couples still hoping for tickets. An hour later the de- cision was made to issue thirteen extra tickets. Homecoming Court members were in- troduced to kick the evening off. Senior class representatives, Kendyl Albin and Dirk Julian, were crowned Homecoming Queen and King, while Kelli Talley and Kenny Cox were named Princess and Prince. Other senior court members in- cluded Angie Brunson, Jeff Thompson, Karen Brown, Darrin Carnahan, Amy Brown, Kerry Schutz, Staci Fulton, Benj i Winters, Shannon McCulley, and Todd Johns. Jennifer Talley, Stephanie Streiter, Jeff Crowe, and John McGregor attended as junior court members. Sophomores re- presenting their class were Kerri Brauk- hoff, Kelly Seikman, John Damm, and Clint Lauderdale. Attending their first homecoming were Jame Weber, Angela Goebel, Wes Wilhite, and Scott Johnston representing the freshman class. Reitz lost the home- coming game to Mater Dei by a score of 14-6. The West Side trophy was once again given to Mater Dei. The New Peppy was introduced at the game, but his enthusiasm wasn't enough to pull the team through. Balloons deco- rated the cafeteria to support the Home- coming theme Power of Love by Air Supply. Ex-Reitz student, Darin Julian D.J.'d the dance. Photographs of couples were taken by OEA. MONSTER MASH PARTY SMACK! The first singles dance of the school year was sponsored by OEA. The dance had a great turn out. The Disc Jockey taught the student a new dance called, The Time Warp. The gym was decorat- ed with pumpkins and straw to add the perfect atmosphere. Many people came in costume for the costume contest. The win- ner 0f the couples were Johnny An- derson and Matt Osbourne as Cheech and Chong. The wineer amoungst the guys was Jeff Neisz as a hooker. The winner amoungst the girls was Angie Brunson as a mermaid. There were many other unique Characters such as, a canibal, a hol- ly leaf, the statue of liberty, and the three mummies, all who added to the goulish excitement of the Hal- loween bash. Along with all the fun and laughs, the singles dance was a great success. 3W i , gt R WHO'S WHO? . Cannibal tMarcia Flenerl stalks her prey. Mmturl unpoctod Headlines proclaimed the space shuttle tragedy to everyone, even high school students, who were awaiting the flight. Motorists couldn't help but stare as they passed by the construction site of the new Mead Johnson's office building. A trolley is just as much fun to drive as students feel it is to ride. Will there be a strike? That question was on all minds in February and March as the teachers and the School Board took nearly nine months to reach a contract agreement. They came to an understanding just one day before a walkout. Next to the personalness of the strike story, the most shocking news was the destruction of the space shuttle. The first civilian in space was a school teacher, Christa McAuliffe, from New Hamphsire. The seven challenger crew mem- bers died in the explosion watched by millions over a nationwide television broadcast. This was also the year that Main Street was reconstructed. Despite controversy about the projects value, the city tore down parts of Downtown to put bricks on the street, and start a trolley car to give the area an atmosphere of the 1930's, with a 1980's touch. Construction on Division and Riverside continued to disrupt ev- eryone, but Mead Johnson began construction on a new building near the school that promises future jobs for many Panthers. Some people said it would never happen, but gasoline prices dropped below a dollar for un- leaded. Some said we never have to worry about a poisoned local environment either, but across the Ohio river, a PCB processing plant was approved and the fight between environmental- ists families and plant officials began. It Out Panther Pride members just couldn't stop being Peppy for Football Sec- tionals. Panthers! The new Peppy became an important part of Pep Assemblies. Pep Assemblies Spark True Blue Spirit When Pep Assemblies were taken away from area schools, students protested. At Reitz, something was done. Panther Pride was formed. Unlike most organizations, Panw ther Pride works hard but isnit recognized. Buttons, Ban- ners and Peppy the Panther are a few of the things this group has achieved. Unfortunately, all the hard work from Panther Pride, teachers, band members, and cheerleaders has not done as much good as it should. The reason is the poor spirit shown by students. During the few pep assem- blies awarded to us, students sat and laughed at their peers that did their best to get support for the school. Luckily, though, the hard work hasn't failed. During Football and Basketball games, the teams benefitted from their crowds, and thats why all this hard work is done. The cheerleaders, as they traditionally do, led the assem- blies with many dances and cheers. Reitz High School stands at the top of a hill, overlooking the eity of Evansville. Our School 5 PJ. Reitz High School would not be here today if it had not been for members of the Centennial School Mothers Club, under the leadership of Mrs. CF. Werner who were concerned with the education of their children. In 1913 Children did not have to attend sehool beyond the sixth grade. Almost oneehalf of the pupils graduating from Centennial Elementary School did not continue in sehool attei that pomt. Grades seven through twelve were only offered at Evansville High School which was located downtown. Many West Side mothers eouldn t afford the street car fare or the lunch money it would take for their children to attend the Uptown School. The mothers wanted a school which would offer seventh and eighth grade with possibly ninth and tenth grades being added later, where their children could complete their edmation tlmer to home. After much deliberation on Januai y 30, 1017, the Superintendent of Schools, LP. Benezet and the school board approved the site of Forest Hills four after the mothers stat ted their drive. No one seemed to question the building being built on top of a honeycomb of underground mine tunnels. The Forest Hills site WdS then eommonly Ivtcriul to aK Coal Mine Hill. Turnabout is the chance during the year for girls to ask boys of their dreams out. Many girls spared no expense on their dates, some taking their date to Darylls beforehand. The dance lasted from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm in the cafeteria. The cafeteria was decorated with the Christmas spirit in mind. Santa Claus hats S d T 1 with the couple's names were distributed as party favors. OEA tu ent Dunc 1 members also took pictures of the happy couples in a family scene around the Christmas tree with teddy bears and a rocking H e1ps I e N e e y chair. Mrs. Koch's first period geometry class was the overall winner with 777 cans. Mr. Freece's room won on the second floor and Mr. Haygood's room won on the first floor. The winners received a donut party. The Student Council was very pleased with the results. Brad Toone uses muscle power to stack boxes of cans of food for the needy. Reitz Choir 86 T0 Bermuda While most'Reitz students migrated south to Florida by car or plane on their summer vacatlon, the 1985-86 Reitz Concert Choir had a different opportunity. About 60 ch01r members migrated south to Bermuda aboard the Bermuda Star RElt Z cruise ship on June 6, 1986 and from there began their 8 day performance crulse. In New York, the Choir attended a Broadway show. On June 7, 9 1986, the choir boarded the Bermuda Star. To get a balloon, students donated to the Statue of Liberty Fund. Their names were then placed on a card, then tied to a balloon. Wes Wilhite 13 THE TIME OF KING On November 22, 23, and 24, 1985 the Reitz auditorium was transformed into the mythical, magical kingdom of Camelot. For the first time in several years, a full scale dramatic musical was present- ed by the Reitz drama department. Directed by Mr. Dan Durbin, Camelot succeeded in bringing the pride of Drama back to the Hill. Camelot is a beautiful story which takes place in the time of King Arthur. Andy Hubbard as Arthur along with Ashlun Murphy as Queen Cuenevere and Darren Haygood as Lancelot, made the times of the Knights of the Round Table Come to life. Other members of the cast were Rod Townsend as Merlyn, Heath Coebel as King Pellinorel Matt Caton as Mordred, Melissa English as Morgan, Travis Ray as Tom, Barb Bain as Nimue and Sadie, Mrs. Bucking- ham's pet dog, as Horrid. The cast worked hard to bring Camelot to a successful conclusion. Their feelings were summed up by sophomore Darren Haygood, Lots of hard and long work went into this production. But we also had lots of fun. I'm looking forward to further productions. 1 M V2714 ' Horrid steals the show. Ladies of the court laugh at the antics of Pellinore. Other senior members were Stan Angermeier, Bo Conway, Todd Fehrenbacher, Todd DeWeese, Mi- kele-Ann Lipking, Missy Norman, Marylou Wilkerson, and Kris Reid. Non-seniors included Andy Washo, Kevin Schapker, Tricia Moit, and Au- drey Simpso. Sophomores were Tony Moser, Bruce Barchett, Ann Mulherein, and Lisa Elpers, and freshmen were Kraig Kolb, Gabe Lamar, Beth Schneider and Becky Jorgenson. The theme Love Always Finds a Way rang true the entire night. hw A long shisher and a dunk by Goedde were not enough to stop Mt. Vernon on Homecoming night. 17 Sectional Champs The season got off to a slow start, but the team came on strong at the end of the regular season. After losing five straight the turn around finally came against North with a crushing 38-2 victory. The team ended regular play at 3 and 5. A new football playoff setup gave every team a sectional berth. Reitz' first game was against hard-hitting Boonville, at Boonville, but they came away a 2-9 winner. The next rival was Harrison, confi- dent because they defeated the Pan- thers earlier. This was a changed Kevin Schaper and the defense await New Alba- ny. team, however, and Harrison fell, and the Panthers advanced to the sectional championship. It was Jasper coming to the Bowl. The defense limited them to two points and the offense picked up 2.1. Reitz became one of the final eight, three games away from the Hoosier Dome and a championship. After tak- ing an early lead, Reitz led most of the way against East Central. In the final moments it was a field goal by them that ended the dream. Score, 18-17. Our defense is used to being on the field, said Coach Hape. Here they break for play. Early play left doubtful minds. I Frosh, Reserves 3 Claim City The Freshman and Reserve football squads had more in common this season than just their sports. They both had new coaches, and they both ended with out standing seasons. The Freshman team proved them- selves with a 5-1 record. The game that kept them from an undefeated season was a heart breaking loss to Harrison, 24-22. One factor that added to their win- ning record was their size. The fact that the freshman offensive line outweighed the varsity by 140 lbs. gave them an ad- vantage. Talent was also a factor. Running back Scott Johnston lead the team by scoring 20 touchdowns in the first five games, a new school record. Other standouts were W W 7; , Titles Terry Stevens, line back, and Jeff Good- win, defensive end. The team shows a lot of potential and, with a lot of hard work, they could make a very successful varsity squad , says Coach Gene Backes. This was Coach Backes' first year with the freshman team. The Reserve team was lead to a City Championship with a 6-1 record. Only 25 points were scored against the Re- serve team throughout the entire season. The Westside Reserve trophy was brought back to Reitz for the first time in three years, after defeating Mater Dei by a score of 22-0. The team was head by Coach Mike Horn, also a coaching his team for the first year. Marcos Mayes dives forward against Mater Dei. Combined Varsity and Reserve teams. During this season, the team was lead by Senior Alizabeth Aramowicz and also by Senior Andrea Moore. We had a mediocre season. We came within one team of being in the sectionals, and Alizabeth came within two strokes of be- ing in the sectional, says Coach John Aramowicz about the teams close, but disappointing season. ?shigc Tour: e Sectional t SIAC Front Row: Alizabeth Aramowicz, Andrea Moore; Row Two: Audrey Elfrich, Greta Hardin, Heather Wade. It was, however, a season without many bright spots. They finished with a 1-9 record. One of the bright spots was Matt Volkman, the number one singles play- er. He was a candidate for AlleSIAC hon- or. In coach Schmidt's eyes, the other bright spot was the big improvement in the play of the team. Although only 1-9, the squad became competitive during the season. That cul- minated in a first round win in the sec- tional. They defeated North Posey High School, but they were stopped by North in the second round. The doubles team showed vast im- provement over those of the past sea- sons. The team qualified for the Sectional Meet held in February at Mater Dei advancing to Regional Meet included Brady French, Quentin French, Tommy Anderson, Brad Arney, Joe Thom- as, and Jerry Loeffler. Regionals were held at Castle with Brad Amey, 112 1135., advancing. Arney was the sole representative of Reitz at Semi-State, win- ning his first round. They moved two players up to varsity at the closing of the season. They were Scott Hayes and Andrew Klipsch. Coach Kelly was an inspiration throughout the year. He motivated the players exceptionally, boosting their mo- rales and giving them high hopes for Varsity action next season. Reserves Click The Freshman team had a season long on experience and short on victories. They won only one. Talent is there and the varsity of the future may be better for the way the sea- son went, according to Mr. Wiist. By the season's end, four frosh had moved to the reserve team and closer to the varsity. They were Wes Wilhite, Kraig Kolb, Richard Graves and Raymond Prueit. Perhaps the best long range invest- ment was that fifteen players were kept on the squad, and all of them played. That is more than any other team this year. Wiist invested for the future with people and time. 33 3'4 Kim Overfield dives for the loose ball. Shannon McCulley inbounds to Amy Brown for two. Luanne Montgomery and Lisa Goedde drill for sectionals. Reitz's girl's basketball team pla- gued with illness strode into the sec- tionals, defeated Central, only to fall prey to Mater Dei. They started of winning eight of their first ten games, including hard fought games against Owensburo and Memorial. Finishing the season at 12-8 was a task in itself according to Coach Joe Weber. We were plagued with illness all season long and it gave us a lot of problems. Moving to position is Jenny Long in the lane. Karla Hormuth pulls up for the jump shot. Standards Set The 1985 Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Art Adye, Drum Majors Scott Bogard and Patti Kelley, proved formidable. Twenty-four seniors, though missing state competition by 1.7 points, will leave Reitz knowing they helped set a great standard that no other Evansville band has ever reached. This years band gained thirty more mem- bers and five higher placings in State ranking. Re- garding these changes Mr. Adye said, Size is not determining factor by which you are judged, but it never hurts. Although much of the band will gra- duate this year, thirty more incoming freshmen are expected to join next year. Not to be forgotten is the Reitz Orchestra. The 12 seniors in that group, along with Mr. Adye, entered state fiinals in April, after months of practicing. Forty-one Reitz students, the highest number from Evansville this year, are members of the All-City Band andTor orchestra. Six of these students made the All-State group. The year was highlighted by the choir's cruise to Bermuda. The eight day trip which began on the last day of school, was the first in five years. Deadlines, features, news, copy, pictures, and layouts are words the jour- nalism staffs - both the newspaper, and the yearbook have come to know quite well. Under the guidance of Mr. Gene Aurand, the staffs have undergone many changes. Not only have they experienced the pressures, but also the fun of being a staff member. The newspaper - The Reitz Mirror e was led by Editor Kris- ten Reid, and produced papers with a new look, and a new attitude learned at a summer camp in Bloomington. A mirror mailbox for students was placed outside room 204, and ads were sold to students at Christmas and Valentines Day, all giving students a chance to voice their opin- ions and thoughts. Editors Shae Travis and Angie VanZant di- rected the REFLECTIONS staff in creating the yearbook. After teaching the staff what they learned during the summer at a yearbook work- shop, the editors let the staff go to work.
