Rain doesn't dampen Football Homecoming The 1978 Football homecoming was a great success, a little damp at times, but it didnit seem to dampen anyoneis spirits. North was our rival on that misty night of October 26, who we succeeded in defeating 28-3 despite the weather. It was both a happy and a sad occasion since that was our last home game. During halftime there were six senior girls vying for the title of 1978 ttFootball Homecoming Queen. The girls came on the field in style as each rode in a corvette around the bowl and then stepping out on the soggy field to await the Sherri Spradley beams after being crowned 1978 Football announcement of the winner. It was held at the Executive Inn Florida Room where the tropical decor of the room worked in perfectly with the theme, uWeive Got Tonight. Music was provided by Clear Lights, which was also a little bit off of tradition in providing couples with peppier music to dance to instead of the old-folk beats. The crowning of Queen Sarah Waltz and King Scott Toelle highlighted the evening. Not only were assemblies in the gym, but on a special occasion we were lucky enough to have one in the Bowl. At this assembly Coach Ashworth made his first impression in front of the student body-and a good impression it was. Throughout the year vistors ranging from R2D2, from Star Wars, to Santa Claus, from the North Pole, came to arrouse the enthusiasm in the students. llThe worm was introduced by the football team while Coach Chapman kept us up on Elvis. Page Thirty-eight A A ,- ,M School spirit was abundant this year during the fall, winter, and spring sports. One factor contribut- ing to this vast supply of spirit was the great enthusiasm displayed by the cheerleading squad. This years squad was led by captain Beth Demarest who was involved in leading cheers each of her four years at Reitz. Nancy Patton and Tina Wargel also were seniors cheering on the team. The rest of the group was comprised of juniors Sandy Carroll, Valerie Emge, and Michelle Good. Overflowing with pep and enthusiasm was this years Varsity Cheerleaders. Panthers share City and SIAC This year varsity gridders compiled an impressive 8-1 record but failed to gain a berth in the, IHSAA play-off for the first time in 3 years. Under the leadership of new head coach Bob Ashworth, who took over after the resignation of Bob Padgett last season, the Panthers knocked off one of Kentucky's top rated teams, Henderson County in the rain34-20 for the first win of the season. In the second game Reitz had to muster up all the tradition they had to come from behind to dump J effersonville 17-14 after Senior Chuck Weston broke loose for a big gain to set up the winning score. The Panthers continued to rack up wins over Harrison, Central, and Castle before they came up against Memorial who handed Reitz their first regular season loss in 30 games. The varsity squadiinjshed the season with a Win over west, side foe Mater Dei and whipped North to end the season on a high note. Reitz final spark for a play-off spot dwindled when Columbus East and Bloomington North both won tough games in the final weekend of the season to secure their place in the play-offs. They supported athletic events, took an active part in Pep assemblies and devoted 1 long hours sponsoring special interest groups and activities. Administrators were there to answer students, questions about program planning, careers and college opportunities. Above all, the Where Its a Pleasure to Learn, Gang proved to any student willing to listen that they too, are human and capable of making an occasional mistake just like anyone. They have also been there to give us a helping hand L or just to patiently listen to our problems-not as teachers, but , y .V . w as friends. Treasurer Jane Goedde, Vice President Chuck Weston. and President Jayne Weatherholt. were trained to get their class on the right track this year. J' Ahshire sis t f? v4 Robi Appel Page Seventy Tony Alexander Four years have flown by and it seems like only yesterday we were frightened freshman asking directions to the elevator which led to the swimmming pool. Of course, we soon found out there were no elevators or swimming pools, and our faces gradually lost that frightened look. As school progressed. we progressed learning new things and meeting new people everyday. We were proud of our football team which had a share of the city title and equally proud of our basketball, baseball, golf. tennis, and track teams. Our wrestling team was represented well at both the semi-state and state competitions. Girls sports also played an important role in making the Reitz sports program a success. Pep Club, Student Council, NJHS, NHS, Quill and Scroll, and Thespians also played an active role in our lives. The spring of 1979 brought the've Got Tonightii as the Junior-Senior Prom theme, and graduation was here before we knew it. The days passed by quickly for those seniors counting the days on their calendars. For those victims of lsenioritis' a remedy was senior week with graduation celebrations. Now, as our senior year comes to an end, we start to think of the coming years and what they will bring. One thing is for sure - we will always carry with us the memories of good times and friends weive known while at the school on the hill. The memories weill share are super and fine because were the class of 79.
