CLASS HISTORY The great year 1951 has finally arrived. It is a great year for us, the Senior Class of 1951, but let us take old Father Time s hand and journey back to the year 1947 when a great swarm of one hundred and six green and excited, yet determined freshmen invaded the V. H. S. campus. We soon found it was a great task trying to learn Algebra, but after a while most of us mastered it. Our principal was Mr. Charles B. Honeycutt and our teachers were: Mr. H. L. LaFevers, Miss Betty Cline, Mrs. Jean Miller, Mr. W. J. Cotten, Miss Anita Ghigo, Miss Lucy Goins, Mr. Burton Barger and Mr. Charles White. By our sophomore year some of our fears were calmed and we were ready to conquer new subjects such as Biology. The teachers of this year were: Mr. Honeycutt, Mr. Barger, Mr. Cotton, Mr. Robert Gourley, the new band and chorus director, Miss Jennie McNaull, and Mrs. Antoinette Moore. We were very sorry to learn that Mr. Cotton, long a very able and distinguished member of the faculty was leaving us. Our Junior year was a very exciting one. We all worked hard as salesmen at the football games to raise enough money for the Junior-Senior banquet which we sponsored. Old V. H. S. really had a new look because eighteen new rooms had been added during the summer. The elementary school had more space for eager students since we gained a large group of 7th and 8th graders. The seventh and eight grade teachers were: Mrs. Ruth Mull, Mr. Charles Owens, Mrs. Eleanor Brinkley,and Mrs. Melissa Grill. We welcomed our new principal, Mr. John L. Johnson, who had done such splendid work in the elementary school. Our teachers were: Miss Eloise Marlowe, Mr. and Mrs. Barger, Mrs. Myra Braswell, Mr. Leo Brevard, Miss Ghigo, Mr. Gourley, Mr. H. D. Moretz, Mrs. Mary Reep, and Miss Jane Caudell. At last the great year which we have anticipated has come. Dignified seniors; it hardly seems true, yet that is what we are, after our four years of training. Three new clubs have been formed this year: The Dramatics Club, the Allied Youth, and a French club, Les Amis Francais. Our teachers are: Mr. and Mrs. Barger, Mrs. Braswell, Miss Ghigo, Mr. Moretz, Miss Ada Lee Randall, under whose direction many fine plays have been given, Mr. I. C. Wilson, who is very useful with the hammer and saw in his industrial arts class, and Mr. George Wilson, our inspiring band and chorus director. All our teachers have done splendid work instructing us and have boosted us a step further up the ladder of success. Many of us will continue our studies in college. For others this will be the last year of study although one really never stops learning new things, still others will prepare themselves to preserve the freedoms which we have so abundantly enjoyed. May the future years hold in store for us life s greatest gifts, peace, prosperity and happiness. JEANNE GRANA Class Historian
