Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1967 volume:

People Are The These people have shown that they possess the qualities of leadership. They are essential for the smooth running of the school and for the il- lustration of a democratic society. Representing the Senior Class and Francesville High School are the Senior Class officers: Barbara Federer, Secretary; Sonja Wuethrich, Treasurer; Mike Bucher, President; Danny Noonkester, Reporter; and Darrel Erb, Vice President. Studying hard are the Freshman Class officers: Connie Doll, Secretary; Linda Haring, Vice President; Jack Lawrence, President; Betty Disinger, Reporter; and John Alkire, Trea- surer. 2 Heart Of The School The people here are the leaders of our school. They enable us to smoothly and resourcefully get through the school days, months, and years. There must be a leader in any situation, but especially in a school where the learn- ing processes and skills are being developed in every individual. These students have developed leadership qualities which are being used for the ben- efit of all. It is a hard, often unrewarding job; but these leaders have helped us get the most out of every school day and activity. The Juniors are happy over die business of their Junior Stand during the year. The Class Officers are from left to right: Greg Stone, Vice Presi- dent; Bonnie Walters, President; Bonnie Busch, Secretary; Debbie Wue- thrich, Reporter; Sharon Tanner, Treasurer. The Sophomore Class officers are deciding what to do with the money they earned from their coat check. They are from LEFT TO RIGHT: Trudi Knapp, Reporter; Barry Gutwein, President; Dennis Eldridge, Treasurer; Rodney Pardue, Vice President; and Kathy Davis, Secretary. Being In Class Is Necessary Where does every student go each morning before he goes to class? He goes to his locker, of course. Many times, when al- most tardy, he gets in a great hurry. He runs to his locker, opens the door, and everything comes falling to the floor. Finally, after looking through the big piles of gum wrappers, papers, and books with disgust, he finds what he needs. He sneaks What else can happen! down the hall to class, making sure Mr. Canary doesn't catch him, or else--! Many have the problem of getting to school on time, and run into these kinds of predic- aments. The only way to solve such prob- lems is to get up earlier and get an earlier start for school. By doing this, they should be able to get to class on time without having so many problems. My studies are my goal! 5 Algebra students Grant Heroe, Jeff Bamgrover, Loma Owens, and Sharon Tanner stop after class to ask Mr. Brown a question. Get it in there straight, boys! As classes continue, we see Mr. Brown with his Algebra class. Some have learned how to solve equations, while others have learned how to balance the ever challenging bank statement. When well planned, the activities in Mrs. Wilkinson's English class re- sult in learning the fundamentals of the language arts as well as behav- iorial patterns that serve well out- side the classroom. Spanish classes have used oral Spanish every day. Grammar ex- ercises and stories make up the greatest part of the homework as - signments. Spanish songs are also an important part of the study. Mrs. Mann keeps her shorthand class busy everyday with dictation and transcribing. These girls intend to use their shorthand after grad- uation in work or as an aid in college. Mrs. Wilkinson spends much time instructing the students indi- vidually when they are having trouble understanding English. 6 A Strong Mind What did you learn in school today? This is a frequent question. But we cannot measure what we learn day by day. We pick up bits of knowledge and accumulate them. We add to these bits every day. Music and art are an important part of everyone's life. The band partic- ipates in many outside activities during the year. These include parades and ballgames, music festivals and contests. The chorus does not have as many outside activities but does take part in the County Music Festival and Baccalaureate Services. In art a student learns to be creative. They work with crafts, water colors, weaving, papier mache, clay, and sketching trying to improve their skills. As a climax to the years activities in Home Economics, the student put on a style show. At this time, the garments made in class and the proj- ects from home are displayed to the public. The field of science has many different branches. Mr. Reeves makes each part as interesting as possible day to day. This ranges from the squeamish girls in biology, who think the specimens are alive and about to devour them, to the brave boys who show few, if any, qualms about dissecting. The seventh grade, with the help of Mrs. Chilcott, use their imagination in art class. Physical science is an interesting subject to the eager Sophomores. And Body. Mrs. Moncel demonstrates how to properly light an oven. 9 Consuming Food This year Mrs. Carolyn Kruger, our library aide, has been very helpful to the students in locating and learning to locate needed ma- terials for their assignments in our library. Many new books have been added to our library which has added to the value of our instructional center. Lunch is the most awaited time of the day for most students. Be- sides having a very nourishing meal the students have time for going downtown or playing basket- ball in the gym. Linda Lowry and Debbie Hintz are busy working on their homework in Study Hall. Mr. Reeves watches over his Study Hall to make sure everyone is hard at work. From the look on Gwen Gutwein's face it may be said that lunch is the time for laughter and a friendly conversation. 10 Picking up your tray is a daily routine for the students, including Patty Irven. Serving the food daily are two of our cooks, Mrs. Overman and Mrs. Pardue. 11 The Seniors seem to find a little time at noon hour for gossip. Mr. Ullery'sU.S. History Class is enjoyed by Glenda Huber and her classmates. Jacky Westphal is trying to better her grade in Speech Class as her fellow class- This year the gov- ernment classes have attempted to learn more about the Unites States and how it functions from within. It is of great importance today to have this understanding be - cause we are all part of the biggest political, economic, and military power ever known to man. We try to recognize the aspects that have given this country greatness, and at the same time point out the problems that go with it. The class has come to the conclusion that while the future seems unsure, the fate of the world can easily depend on the future leadership of our country, and our future leadership depends on how we are able to educate ourselves in order to solve our ever- growing problems. mates look on. Typing Class has at least four diligent students. A good tasting pencil eraser helps Chuck to get typing done. Is The Various things occur in the afternoon at F. H.S. Some are in P.E. running their legs off, while others are quietly sitting in study hall trying to concen- trate on their studies. Every once in a while, there is someone who gets sent to the princi- pal's office. When this happens, look out--Mr. Canary has a holey paddle that he knows how to use. Afternoon life at F.H.S. is not always filled with studying. Fun and laughter is mixed in with the studying, not only by the students, but by the teachers also. It looks like Mr. Canary just got through using that holey paddle of his on Ronnie Osbum. 14 I certainly wish this Bookkeeping wasn't so difficult to understand. Mr. Brown's Geometry class surprised him with a wedding party. For Personality Freshman SSS girls anxiously awaiting formal initiation. It is better to light just one little candle than to stumble in the dark. Extra curricular activities, such as: FFA, FTA, SSS, NHS, Sports, and plays bring much variety and learning ex- perience to the students. With love in my heart, for- getting self, 1 shall make the object of my life helpfulness and kindness to others. . . This is part of the creed that is well worn in the hearts of every SSS girl. Displaying love and kindness in ways of Thanksgiving baskets, to the elderly, Christmas caroling, and contributions to Riley Hospital are the main objec- tives of the Sunshiners. The Future Teachers of America are learning traits of the teaching profession through films, lectures, and trips. One way the FTA raises money is through the Tri-Organization Fish Fry. Basketball practice stimulates Darrell Erb and Terry Tillett. At last, Barry Gutwein receives a heaping plate full of fish after his work is finished at the National Honor Society and Future Teacher's Fish Fry! Senior boys and SSS girls enjoy singing a 'love song' to the teachers at the Sing- ing Valentines Party. Character There are many fun activ- ities that we have at F. H. S. In February we have the singing valentines sponsored by the Sunshine Society. At this time, the girls get roses and the boys get carnations. At the beginning of March, we have the Senior-Faculty basketball game. Grades 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 play each other. The big game comes when the Seniors play the Faculty. As we come to the closing days at F. H.S. , we can all say that they have been prof- itable ones. Our school days at Francesville will always be remembered. Development The crowd watches tensely as Glen Doll attempts to make a basket. EnUiusiasm grows as the Pep Club practices for the tourney. 19 The mouse (Claudia Howat) symbolizes the small country, Grand Fenwick that Roared on the United States. Gloriana (Sharon Tanner) portrays to the Forest Ranger (Larry Doll), Tully Bascom her wishes to form a subversive party to get aid from the U. S. Eccentric Professor Kokintz has finally ful- filled his ambition to create a new secret weapon for the U. S. Prof. K. played by Pat Davis, General Snippet by Rick Kruger, Two wacs by Debbie Wuethrich and Loma Owen. THE MOUSE THAT ROARED The last play pre- sented by F. H. S. on April 14-15 was a humorous satire of Grand Fenwick, 3 by 5 miles, and unknown to the rest of the world was faced with a serious trade deficit. Her precious wine, the only export, was being produced in the U. S. at half price. Fearing the possibility of having to surrender their liberty and indepen- dence, Grand Fen- wick declared war on the U. S. so they'd be rehabil- itated. To their surprise they won the war. 20 Whether or not to employ Annie Sulli- van is a topic of dis- cussion during meal time. Mother played Helen Keller finally grasps the meaning that Mother and Wah-wah , symbol- izes the climax in the three act play The Miracle Worker . This smashing per- formance was made successful by a group of energetic Seniors. For a while rehearsals were chaotic; but as curtain time drew near, everything fell into place with remarkable ease. The unusual setting of the stage and the use of the gym floor as the garden house and the pump scene, held the attention of the aud- ience. The production involved long rehearsals and hard work. But val- uable experience was gained under the direc- tion of Mr. Shopa. Learning to talk with her hands is a great discovery for Helen Keller. Helen Keller played by Jacky Westphal, Annie Sullivan by Kay Reed, James by Wally Knapp. by Mary Pfledder, Father by John Boeh- ning and James by Wally Knapp. Father are not only people but words. Helen Keller's only world is one of exploring with her finger tips. Cheerblock shows enthusiasm at a tense moment. Participate In And Support Before sending a substitute in the coach gives word of advice. Rebounding is vital to the winning of a ball game. The Last of the Good Guys The end has come for the Francesville Zebra basketball team; it's the last of the good guys. ” Though we come to a saddening halt with only seven wins this season, no one could be prouder of our team than the FHS fans. Our boys have fought, and fought hard, despite the tragedies which seemed always to pop up. We now close the last FHS Zebra basketball season with these resolute words, We love you, Zebras. Now, anticipating the future, we look to an even greater team as we become the new West Central Trojans. 23 Time outs, time for rest and instructions. Maurice Kopka realizes the importance of free throws. Since this year was Francesville's last Prom it looked as though the Juniors made sure no one would forget the event. The decorations of Palm Trees and City Ruins made you forget the rushing world outside and for one night live in a dream world centered around Arabian Nights. Everyone seemed to suddenly spring to life as they danced to the music played by the Sixteen Sounds. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen and Prince and Princess. Everyone agreed that both the King and Queen, Maurice Kopka and Barb Federer, and Prince and Princess, Chuck Meyer and Bonnie Busch, made the nicest looking couples ever crowned at a Francesville Prom. This year's Prom will be one long remembered by this year's Seniors, I'm sure! Extra Curricular Activities King and Queen, Maurice Kopka and Barbara Federer were crowned by the Junior Class President, Bonnie Walters and the Vice-President, Greg Stone. Many exciting things happened at the prom tliis year. Here Dan Von Holten, Marceille Reed, Norm Putt, Mary Pfledderer, Wanda Walters, and Steve Westphal are looking at one of the candid shots taken that night. Last year's prom was held at Halleck Center with Tahi- tian Paradise as its Theme. Greg Stone was one of the Tahi- tian Servers. Harold Rogers, Eric Stotler and their dates seem to be Dreaming the Night Away under the watchful eye of Mr. Canary! 25 As the band plays Pomp and Circumstance Barbara Pelsy awaits her turn to march in. 26 The Seniors boys await their final step of high school. And This The Heart, The Leaders Of It has been some years since a happy-go-lucky group of boys and girls trooped off to their first day of school and thus became a part of the class which is graduating this year. They attracted the attention of the many teachers who had them in class because they felt that they were exceptional in many ways. There have been some changes along the way--they have been parted from some friends because they have moved to other cities, they have been parted from some because they found it necessary to drop- out of school, and they have been parted from others because they advanced more rapidly than the sched- ule which had been set from them as a group. This parting of the ways has been sad in many respects but they have continued on as a happy group of young people. This is a critical as well as a sad time for them all. They must now make a choice of their life's work and must sever the relations which have been theirs to enjoy for so many years. Critical moments such as these enter into all human experience and they are no exception. To few people does life bring a brighter day than that on which he receives his diploma re- minding him that he must leave his school and go forth into the world to fight life’s battles. Pictured at the LEFT are the eight students who won scholarships this year. They are the following: Janet Gutwein- NHS Scholarship, SSS Scholarship, Forty Eight Scholarship. Ronald Tillett- B. V. With pictures portraying a day's activity, from morning until night in our new in- formal section, we have shown what really goes on in our school. Thus the true picture of school life is revealed and it can be seen that school is not all studying, but a steady process of building charac- ter. We have also included three juniors to our staff, so they will have the experience to enable them to have a still better annual next year.
