■rrrrrrr wvr yy Zke Tamilian Presented by The Class of 1963 Francesville Indiana Barren Halls !! deprived of life? Empty Halls !! devoid of sound? Were these your thoughts when you looked at the end sheet? Oh, how wrong you were! Those are memory filled halls. They are echoing with quickened footsteps, spilled books, whispered secrets told behind half open locker doors, mounted excitement before each ball game, and yells for Seniors of '63. The halls are highways leading us through high school to that point called graduation, more aptly commencement, for 'we have finished to begin. Dedication THE HIGHER WE CLIMB THE BROADER THE VIEW We, the seniors of 1963 dedicate this, our annual, to our community for the sup- port it has given to the activities sponsored by the Senior class. Parents, to you we give thanks for the understanding and encouragement you have shown us in both hard and easy tasks. Nor are we unmindful of our teachers for toiling with us through our twelve years of school. . NATION ADMINISTRATI MINISTRATION ADM TON ADMINISTRATION MINISTRATION ADMI. In April, under the direction of Mrs. Carpenter, we entertained PTC with a one act play and a de- bate. On May n, three representatives of the speech class participated in the first Midwest Con- ference Speech Meet at Klondike. These students learned much about Journalism under Mrs. Oiling, who was with us for only one semester. In fact, it was a rare scene to see Larry Nelson, Charlie Mark- in, Don Link, and Fred Taylor, digging in that seriously. Mr. Elam taught us government and economics and the debates in each grew quite heated at times. Barbara seems to be presenting a point of view that even amuses her. Edward Stalbaum Fred Taylor Sure that’s a dogl” says our co-sponsor, Mrs. Maxine Wilk- inson. As well as teaching courses in home economics and government. Even though Ronnie appears to be sleeping, Barbara, Tom, Pat, Evelyn, Paul, Cathy, Vicky, Martha, Marilyn, and Ed vouch to the fact that this is not a class one sleeps through. The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners by Kristin Sergei This play had a powerful message and showed how stunned the patrons of the school were when they realized that they were all responsible for the trage- dy of the loss of a boy's life. Craig, Jenny, Joe, and Jim were only a few of the juniors who put on a fine per- formance. Spanish is one of the subjects that Sophomores often take. The Spanish Club was newly organized this year under the supervision of Mr. Dominguez. Ofelia Alva served as president. Victory is the total of diverse efforts, many being little known. Among those efforts are those of the student managers. Craig and Norm were quick to the call of towels, resin, and other equipment as well as giving them that pat on the back that spoke, You can do it! On the pictures at the left and the bottom of page we see Ron Vogt trying for a field goal at our final game of the year with Reynolds at the Sectional. A game cannot be won on offensive play only. Jim Myers is guarding one of the opponents Because of our good defensive play, we only lost by one point in this game. At the season's start there was doubt as to the make-up of our team. After some experimentation the right combination for the quintet was welded from the talents of the line. We ended our season with the win and loss columns almost even, but no team ever loses when good sportsmanship controls its efforts. N. Rinker, Manager; D. Vogt, J. Myers, R. Vogt, R. Albrecht, D. Certainly these are great advantages to anyone in athletics, but a boy also needs the desire to succeed in an honest way. Invariably, one who possesses such desires will succeed; for he will practice, work hard, and follow a good set of training rules. Furthermore, desire will lead the athlete to willingly make personal sacrifices that will not only aid his own success but will also help his team. Irishman Zcam First row: J. Kesler, L. An integral part of vocational education in agriculture in the public school system of America is the FFA. No other national student organization enjoys greater freedom of self-government under adult counsel and guidance. Under the leadership of Mr. Lawrence, the Francesville Chapter won honors in judging soils and seeds as well as participating in other activities. When the soil judging team brought home its trophy, it rewarded them for the work and long hours involved in prepara- tion. At left, Carol, State Recording Secretary at Sunshine Camp. Right, Conda, Char, Wanda and Barb at In- formal Initiation. Cupid Conda strikes again! In this way each will come away with something to share with 'Others in the school and com- munity. This is the Key to a successful Sunshine Chapter. Burn that midnight oil . . . make that deadline .... acquire steadiness with speed. To have taken such a picture would have resulted in one large blur, but these are the tra- ditions of the annual staff and those who possess am- bition and energy will carry them on from year to year. The revitalizing of our library was capably done by Mrs. Carpenter. Her staff of students maintained the orderly atmosphere. The surroundings were enhanced by the plants and seasonal decorations she brought. Desks were replaced by tables and chairs which added to our comfort. Sitting: Nancy Bridegroom, Diane Radcliffe, Peggy Bumbalough. Standing: Sharon Canary, Vicky Dalka, Janice Montgomery, Craig Gutwein, Mrs. Carpenter, librarian. Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth The stupified look on our faces doesn't really indicate our intel- ligence. We just couldn't be- lieve Mrs. Elam could find so many nice, expressive ways to tell us to learn those lines. This fresh, founded-on-fact comedy is a once in a life- time opportunity for h igh school performers. The theme of the play is the real life experiences o f a large family in the mid 1920's. Tsk! Tskl However, we doubt if either Roger or Marcia was too jealous when Ed kissed Marilyn. Even though her temper flared and Mr. Elam carried out her threats, we still loved our director, Mrs. Elam. Ladies and Gentlemenl . . . No, that's not what Katie is telling Ronnie. When the family all appeared on the stage at one time, it made quite a group. Yet Marilyn, Carol, Ruth, Katie, Ron, Carl, Dianne, Rog, Dave, and Ed still had room to present an excellent per- formance. Roman Holiday Mr. Konopasek, Eric Gutwein, and Guy Ramey seem to be enjoying Roman Holiday, the theme of the junior-senior prom. The banquet and dance was held in Lafayette at the Palms. Following the dance, they came back to Francesville for the show and breakfast. Rog and Marilyn, most popular Senior couple, look happy after being voted King and Queen of the Junior-Senior Prom. The Juniors, host class for the Prom, are re presented by Paul and Sue, Prince and Prin- cess. Reciting dates theories, and facts Gene, Barb, Dianne, Marily slowly took their exams. These are the finals; these are the times that tell the result of the study or its lack; which has gone in- to a semester's work. Testing can become aeon- fusing time—even to having three teachers super- vising one test as is found in this posed scene on Mr. Dickson, Mr. Konopasek, and Mr. Hart. As the tests were passed out, the students exper- ienced a final wave of despair and anxiety — Some who came well prepared finished early, others were just hoping to finish. Gene was among the lucky ones, though finishing last, who heard Mr. Hart, say, You made it ! Empty chairs, sole witness to the last minute efforts of sen- iors and underclassmen alike. All that's left is to 'tally the score'. Mr. Elam, as do other teachers, hopes he can say yes! to the question Did I pass? , but only the j student can make this an- swer possible. Rev. Messick gave the Bacca- laureate address on responsibil- ity with freedom. This picture was taken during the invocation. It seems to have caught Rog, Don, and Dick off guard. Graduates, ill at ease for the delay in time, are waiting to take their places for that final exercise in which they will receive their diplomas, their tickets to the future. The end of the beginning - - this is graduation. Four and more years of learning are climaxed in the diploma which each graduate re- ceived. Cominencement brings both joy and sorrow. It closes the pages of one of the happiest chapters of life, yet it opens a new world to him in which his true value will be meas- ured. Petrified Peggy peers forward anxi- ously while Waunita and Ruth giggle. Our feet hurt, and legs ache, but the elevator takes its own sweet time. Steps, steps, steps and more steps. This is the tune Nancy, Peggy, Bon- nie, Carol, Dianne are singing. Changing of the Guards at Arlington Cemetery was one of the most im- pressive sights on our trip. The seniors posed for this picture near the capital in Washington, D.C. They were glad for this chance to rest on their busy tour. Excitement was high as the seniors boarded the plane for the first air trip most of them had taken. The wind blew Carol and Diane to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty. Mount Vernon was found by Carol to be very beautiful. Stella and Dianne enjoyed seeing the many flags flown in front of the U.N. Building. J. Overmyer, S. Johnson, W. Moncel, M. Pfledderer, S, Speicher and, almost hidden, T. Miller. The first print shop in Indiana at Vin- cennes was just one of the many sights visited on the 16th annual Pulaski County History Tour which 8th graders look forward to each year. The bus ride is always an enjoyable part of the tour, though at times it becomes very tiring. Even with the Kibitzing from D. Von Holten, R. Osburn, and J. Boehning; B. Pelsy managed to win most of the games from B. Tom, Santa Claus land entrance but no students! I Naturally they are all inside visiting the Wax Museum, the Doll House, and of course the souvenir shops. At Corydon, R. Osburn, A. Tetzloff, M. Kopka, M. Pfledderer, and S. Johnson took time to read the historical marker of the Battle of Corydon to which W. Moncel is pointing. They also toured the first state capitol. Again we find Richard and Maurice but this time D. Von Holten is with them. J. Overmyer and T. Miller complete the group that has just come out of the first state capitol. We entered as timid Freshmen, we leave as graduates bold, And we find it hard to realize the knowledge our young heads hold. We've had our foolish notions knocked higher than Franklin's kite; Our minds have been made over, and we know it served us right. We've spent four years in labor hard to prove the fact once more, That life is quite confused, and two and two are seldom four. We're crammed to the brim with learning, and now we must turn it to use, And if one of us is a failure, he hasn’t a single excuse. The more we work and the less we talk the better results we shall get, For we've had four years of training: it may make us successes yet.
