-M Wx af, 1:78 The senior year for the class of 1986 proved to be more eventful than anyone would have dreamed possible. While we tried to comprehend everything happening on the national level, we were also strug- gling through a number of campus issues. September started on a less than positive note. Resident Assistants turned out to protest financial aid cuts which threatened to affect all school employees. Although many R.A.'s did lose their financial aid, the protest was successful in keeping other's aid from being cut. The last weekend of September brought Hurricane Gloria to the campus. Although it didn't prove as devastating as feared, the campus and neighboring houses showed the aftermath of the storm. Another national event which was strongly felt on campus was the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Christa McAuliffe was an alumnus of Framingham State, and she had intended to speak at Graduation in May. As F.S.C. moumed their loss, another tragedy struck. In February, Paul Murphy, the President of the Class of 1986, suffered a heart attack and died a week later. Paul was a respected student leader and a well loved friend, and the loss will be felt long after graduation. In March, O'Connor Hall was robbed during Spring Break. While only two resident assistants and a graduate assistant were in the building, someone broke in and stole a master key. The key was then used to enter the rooms on the ground floor to .'l'i 'iw-T vii MX ,.,V if lOl . ..AS:...e1aQ',. , . ,J take jewelry and money. Despite the ex- tensive cooperation of four Resident Assis- tants from O'Connor, Campus Police were unable to solve the case and they tumed it over to the State Police. After a brief in- vestigation, the State Police closed the case, dismissing any leads from Campus Police. On the brighter side, we welcomed a new President to Framingham State this year. Dr. Paul Weller took over as the 12th president of F.S.C, in August. The official Inauguration ceremony was held on April 12, and Governor Michael Dukakis was present to swear in Dr. Weller. Although the residence halls remained 'Ldry, the Ram's Den Pub finally reopened after an extended dry spell. On Jan. 22, the issue of liability insurance was solved, and the traditional Thursday night at the Pub 'i i A ff' ,gi 2 . x ax f- X tr... i ,p ' it - ' E5 1- 1 R Kiki fr x '11 E X 1 X it 1,,.. 4 ,sa .J , f ... ...JY was back! The College Center celebrated its tenth anniversary on April 4th with a reception for students and faculty. The College Center officially became the D. Justin McCarthy College Center earlier in the year. The new 'Arts and Humanities Program, also began this year. On April 17th, American Pulitzer Prize Winning Author James Baldwin spoke on the American Myth, an optical illusion conceming the black. On May 1st, Sue Miller, author of The Good Mother, read excerpts of her work. Miss Miller was named the Outstanding Writer 1984-85 by the Pushcart Press. A few athletic achievements helped make 1985-86 memorable as well. In hockey, the three first line forwards, Todd Barry, Eric Donaghey, and Marc MacDonald together scored a total of 187 points in 27 games. In basketball, Dave Peach broke the school record by scoring 54 points in a game against Westfield State. For women's basketball, Maureen Faulkner scored her 1000th point against Westfieldg this was the first time a sophomore had ever achieved that. The year wasn't always the best, but it did have its high points. Good or bad, it was our senior year, and we made it. We will always remember our senior year at Framingham State, not necessarily as our easiest, but maybe our proudest. 23
