T m he pep rally is one of the most enjoyed and most well-remembered aspects of a student ' s high school career. Rallies give students a chance to show their school spirit and their support for the various athletic teams that exist at North High. There were three rallies held during the 1988-1989 school year. The first was held early in the fall, and during this rally the captains of the fall sports teams were introduced. The second rally was held just before Thanksgiving to help cheer the football team and wish them luck for the Thanksgiving Day game. The third rally was held in December, and all the captains of the winter sports teams were introduced. Preparations for the rallies begin at least a week in advance. Each class makes its own signs and decorations-to hang over its particular bleacher in the gym. Generally, these signs deal with a sort of Class Competition ; each class tries to prove that it is the best in the whole school. However, the administrators do their best to make sure that no feelings are hurt in this process and the competition is all done in good fun. Rallies do more than just introduce captains and their teams. They also give cheerleaders, pom-pon girls, color guards, and baton twirlers a chance to give the students a preview of what they will see during the half-time. Also, sometimes students put on skits to provide some sort of comic relief for the audience. For example, during the first rally of the year, Jen Dublirer, captain of the swimming team, came into the gym in a scuba diving outfit carrying a large rubber raft. Although rallies occur rather infrequently, they are memorable and exciting events in which the whole school can join together as one.
