FRAMINGHAM NORTH HIGH SCHOOL A STREET FRAMINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS 1989 ARCHON CROSSROADS 7 11 14 MEMORIES OUR COTILLION T m he pep rally is one of the most enjoyed and most well-remembered aspects of a student ' s high school career. Rallies give students a chance to show their school spirit and their support for the various athletic teams that exist at North High. There were three rallies held during the 1988-1989 school year. The first was held early in the fall, and during this rally the captains of the fall sports teams were introduced. The second rally was held just before Thanksgiving to help cheer the football team and wish them luck for the Thanksgiving Day game. The third rally was held in December, and all the captains of the winter sports teams were introduced. Preparations for the rallies begin at least a week in advance. Each class makes its own signs and decorations-to hang over its particular bleacher in the gym. Generally, these signs deal with a sort of Class Competition ; each class tries to prove that it is the best in the whole school. However, the administrators do their best to make sure that no feelings are hurt in this process and the competition is all done in good fun. Rallies do more than just introduce captains and their teams. They also give cheerleaders, pom-pon girls, color guards, and baton twirlers a chance to give the students a preview of what they will see during the half-time. Also, sometimes students put on skits to provide some sort of comic relief for the audience. For example, during the first rally of the year, Jen Dublirer, captain of the swimming team, came into the gym in a scuba diving outfit carrying a large rubber raft. Although rallies occur rather infrequently, they are memorable and exciting events in which the whole school can join together as one. jAls we, the Class of 1989, look back on our four years at Framingham North High School, we reflect on the influences, cir- cumstances, and ideas that have caused us to change our thinking or to re-establish our values. We recall the decisions we have made — academic and nonacademic, good and bad — and we see how all the choices we have made in the last four years have affected our standing here — on the brink of a new horizon. We can see in our- selves the shadows of who we were when, back on the very first day of our freshman year, we stood on the last threshold of public education. Since then, we have been exposed to the ideas and insights of many people, and perhaps this has caused us to change our perspective on life — and on things in general. Perhaps we have learned the lesson of needing to be unique, different, or even just plain weird in order to get to know ourselves better. Hopefully, this is one lesson we will never forget, because whether we will go on to college or directly into the work force, we will be freshmen again. We stand at this crossroad called Graduation, and we are both scared and over- whelmed. However, there is one difference to be found in what we were as freshmen and what we are now, and that is four years — of learning, growing, thinking, decid- ing, and changing. Today we share that common bond, and even if that fear of the future begins to take hold, we know, somewhere in the back of our minds and the bottom of our hearts, that we will succeed in whatever choice we make at this crossroad. Up until now, we have all been on the same road, but now we shall each decide our own conclusion to, Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the one ... MR. JOHN R. SHAUGHNESSY We, as a class, would like to dedicate the 1989 Archon to John R. Shaughnessy, known to those close to him as Jack. Mr. Shaughnessy began his teaching careet in 1964 as a science teacher at the Lincoln Junior High School in Framingham. In 1969, he was transferred to the William S., Walsh Middle School, where many of us first came to know him. In 1984, one year before we became freshmen, Mr. Shaughnessy came to North to teach math. As most of us know, Mr. Shaughnessy dedicated much of his life to his students and to his friends. Not only was he a great teacher, but he was also a concerned friend and role model to many of his students. Through his example, we learned that there was nothing that we could not overcome. In his classroom, there was never a dull moment or a day when he didn ' t succeed in bringing a smile to our faces and brightening our day. He really wanted his students to do well in his class, and he tried any and every way to get his point across: colored chalk, huge diagrams, posters hung up around the room; once he even drew a diagram on the back of the door. He always had something up his sleeve, be it a witty remark or a joke, and he was never afraid to speak his mind. Over the past four years, many teachers have influenced our lives, but perhaps not with the same kind of patience and caring as did our friend, Mr. Shaughnessy. We miss him more than words can express, but all of us will always carry in our hearts the vivid memories that he has left us. You ' ve touched my heart, without even knowing . . . You ' ve helped my life in so many ways . . . I never had the chance to tell you how good a friend you were . . . When you were here, life was so cheerful . . . You made me laugh, and we laughed together . . . I know you are out there somewhere watching me, like true friends really do . . . You ' ve inspired me to many greatnesses, and changed many of my weaknesses . . . You ' ve made me realize how unfair life is . . . Life was taken away and I don ' t know why . . . I just wish you didn ' t die . . . I can ' t find a reason for why you are gone . . . But now you are somewhere, where you belong . . . So with these final words I say . . . Thank you for being there on all those days . . . Wherever you are, I wish you well . . . I know you were a true friend . . . I say goodbye now with my pen but not, so long, my friend ... I know we will meet again . . . I just know . . . IN MEMORY OF MY FRIEND JACK SHAUGHNESSY JON DAVID ZIBEL October 11, 1988 26 A Student ' s Reminiscence As Mr. Shaughnessy and I continued our friendship, which had begun at Walsh, other students at North High discovered that he was actually more of a friend than just a teacher. Many of these students developed a special relationship with him, as I had done. He was someone with whom you could joke, but he was also a person to whom you could turn if you ever had a problem; he would listen and help in any way he could. Mr. Shaughnessy and I exemplify that age really has no importance in a relationship; it ' s what ' s inside the people that makes it work. Mr. Shaughnessy was thirty-some-odd years older than his students, but that never bothered him or us. I would talk to him just as I would talk to a friend of my own age. I also greatly respected him for his accomplishments as a scholar and teacher, one who couldn ' t have communicated better with his students. Mr. Shaughnessy never wed in his short life, meaning that he had no immediate family. However, in a sense, the teachers, students and many friends in the Framingham Public School System overshadowed that. Jack (which I did start calling him, although he minded a little) did live for a relatively short period of time — only forty-seven years. However, his personality, wit, and great sense of humor will live on in our minds and our hearts forever. By Justin Prager D uring the four years that we, the Class of 1989, have spent at North High, many people have passed through our lives. Each in- dividual has in some way affected a change in our lives — perhaps by thought, word, or deed — that caused an academic or emotional reaction. However insignificant we may have seen that change as being, it has in some way helped to shape our lives. We as a class are sincerely grateful to these people — teach- ers, guidance counselors, admin- istrators, and even our friends — who have helped us along the way. They have collectively given us a great gift, and we can only hope that perhaps we, too, have in some way created a change in them. As we graduate, we are thinking of the people who have been be- hind us, supporting us, sharing our triumphs as well as our tears. We will never forget these special peo- ple because they have left impres- sions in our minds as well as our hearts. We would like them to know that, as we move on to what- ever the future may hold for us, we will never forget the lessons of the past four years — lessons about learning determination, setting goals, recognizing limitations, and giving of ourselves. We can only hope that these people know what a difference their time and their caring have made in our lives; for that, we can never thank them enough. Improvement makes straight roads; but the crooked roads without improvement are the roads of genius. — William Blake The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 28 ADMINISTRATION Dear Graduates, Just think — four short years ago, your worst apprehensions became reality: high school, North High School! As you quickly became accustomed to your new school, you began to build a network for success. Your network is a web of friendship, great successes, happiness, some disappointment, and, above all, academic achievement. Each of you in your own way has become a fine representative of our school and community. If you worked at your schooling, you are ready to meet your respective challenges. If you haven ' t worked, regroup, evaluate, and go forward to overcome new apprehensions and obstacles. If the past is prologue, I predict a beautiful future for each of you. As I ' ve often stated, If you work at your program, whatever it is, you will succeed. Only you can establish what success is and what success means. As you progress, look to the humanities, the fine arts, public service, and teaching; return the human equation to our quality of life. You will be responsible for your life and the quality of life as a whole in the twenty-first century; while your times will be reflective of the highest technology, people to people is the cornerstone of an enduring society. Be sure to be part of the aforementioned human equation. Your graduation from North is but a beginning. This beginning has a solid foundation, but you must use those aspects of what you have gained in a most steadfast manner. Your teachers and I bid you congratulations and wish you a great future. TEACHER of the YEAR Mr. Richard Dargan Mrs. Louise Derro Mr. Donald Buell For the past few years, Framingham North ' s Student Council has sponsored a special program, the selection of the Teacher of the Year, ' ' in conjunction with National Education Week. Students vote for the teacher who has had the greatest educational impact on them or who they feel has been the most helpful to them during their years in high school; it is not a popularity contest. The Teacher of the Year recipient for the 1988-1989 school year was Mr. Donald Buell, a member of North ' s science department, who is noted for his humor and individualistic teaching style. In addition, the Ten Most Outstanding Teachers ' ' were chosen. This year there was a tie, and thus the eleven winning teachers were: Mr. Dargan, Mrs. Derro, Mr. DiDomenico, Mr. Donovan, Mrs. Flurry, Mr. Fortier, Mr. Hawley, Mr. Lutender, Mr Piatt, Mr. Wheeler, and Mrs. Whittaker. Congratulations to all the teachers; they certainly deserve the recognition they have received. Mr. Henry Fortier Mr. John Hawley RETIREES Mrs. Janice Elliott Mr. Henry Schlickman Mrs. Mary Faherty It is always a sad experience for students when a teacher retires; this year we will have the misfortune of seeing three of our faculty members move on to better and brighter pastures. Mr. Schlickman of the English Department, Mrs. Faherty of the Foreign Language Department, and Mrs. Eliott of the Home Economics Department will have retired by the end of this year. These teachers may have worked in different fields, but they have something in common: they have all had a great impact on their students. They have taught us many lessons, both in and out of the classroom. They have been available for advice, extra help in schoolwork, and also simply for a friendly conversation. Their involvement in and dedication to teaching have been a benefit to every student who has been in one of their classes. Over the years, these teachers have witnessed and innovated many changes in the educational system. They have seen the computer become a staple in the school; in the case of Home Economics, Mrs. Eliott has seen more and more boys sign up for what had previously been girls ' classes. Despite these changes, Mr. Schlickman, Mrs. Faherty, and Mrs. Elliott have always managed to keep a strong relationship with their students. We will miss these three educators and wish them luck in whatever the future holds for them. 41 We ' re splitting hairs here. Settk Down! Different Directions Although it is generally the seniors who reach their crossroads at high school and move on to new ex- periences, there are also many teachers who have reached crossroads of their own. Over the last four years many members of our faculty have retired, going on to enjoy the pleasures of their golden years. We will all miss Mr. Schlickman and remember the experiences that we had when he was our English teacher or when he was advising the PACERS. Who can forget Mr. MacGil- livray ' s history class or the field trips he chaperoned for the History Club? Other teachers have left North in search of new careers. Ms. Duane will be missed as both a science teacher and a track coach, and we will re- member Miss Plunkett as one of the chaperons for our junior cotillion. We thank our departing faculty mem- bers for the education and help they have given us and wish them the best of luck for the future. While the above teachers have permanently left the school, there are others who have left for a period of time and then returned to North. Many of us remember Ms. Jezukawicz as a gym teacher at Walsh, and she has recently returned to North after several years to continue teaching physical education here. Mr. Duane came back to North after his trip around the world, and Mr. Coyle, a science teacher and former National Honor Society advisor, has returned after participating in a year-long Project Star program. We are happy to have these men and women return to our faculty. Still other teachers have arrived at North for the first time. They had to adjust to a new school just as we did when we were freshmen. We welcome the following staff: Mrs. Belli, Ms. Giragosian, Ms. Hakerem, Mr. Hawley, Mr. Hymon, Mrs. Hill, Miss Reardon, and Mrs. Yang. We hope that these new faculty members will find their years at North to be as enjoyable as we have. 43 A JL jLthletics have become a way of life for more and more students at North High. Participation in these sports has grown enormously in the past years not only because of Spartan Pride but also because of the ever-popular competition among schools. Being a member of a team at North is an honor of which every athlete should be proud. Gone are the days when being athletic was the only prerequisite to joining a team. It takes more than or- dinary commitment — a total commit- ment that occupies every weekday af- ternoon for months on end. It is a commitment around which athletes re- volve their entire schedule. There is less time for such activities as watching tel- evision, hanging out, and talking on the phone. During an athletic season there is not time for much more than academics and sleep. Competition in high school sports has peaked tremendously in the past few years. In sports like swimming, soccer, football, cross country and field hockey, an athlete must be a tough competitor to survive. It is time that athletes at North be commended for their commitment and dedication rather than for their records of wins and losses. A team that never wins puts as much blood, sweat, and tears into a practice and game as a winning team. Athletes will agree that the time, ef- fort, and commitment all pay off. Every participating athlete should be proud of himself or herself for all he or she has accomplished. Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find his right road. — Dag Hammarskjold Markings 46 Coach of the Year and the Crew The Framingham North High girls ' soccer team finished an outstanding sea- son, terminating in the second round of Division I tournament action. The highly competitive sport of soccer calls for skill and stamina, and this year ' s team, led by Kristen Schlueter, Elisa Finer, and Dawn Blodgett, proved to contain both. This talented team owes much of its success to Coach of the Year, Doreen Whalen, and the liveliness and support of the Crew. Next year ' s season promises to be as successful as this year ' s, for there is an abundance of talented underclassmen on the team, including M.V.P. Karen Stauf- fer and All-Star goalie Alison Snooks. GIRLS SOCCER Top (1-r): A. Snooks, A. Wolfe, H., Moeder, H. Karalis, J. Schlosberg, R. Lovett, K. Satuffer. Middle: A. Chamrin, N. Vassar, J. The boys ' soccer team concluded its season by reaching the Semi-finals in the State Sectionals. The team, led by Josh Bernstein, John Leary, and George Karal- is, had great success over competitive teams such as Needham and Natick. Up close and personal with Coach Wheeler and the clowning of Sebastian Kokar helped to make the season as en- joyable as it was successful. On the of- fensive side, Mike Klein, George Karalis, and Kevin Neissen were standouts. As for the defense, Dan Kung was unforgettable as was the outstanding goal-tending by Mike Shean and John Stein. The varsity soccer team must be praised for its superb season. Other Bay State teams commended North for its tight defense and its overall competitiveness. Bottom: M. Klein, M. Dacey, M. Sheehan, J. Framingham North High ' s volleyball team received a pleasant surprise this year: a new coach, Anibal Rivera. Rivera is a recent graduate of North High (Class of 1987), and while in high school he had played on the volleyball team, helping to win the championship. It was his love for volleyball that brought Rivera back to coach the team, and along with him he brought a great deal of enthusiasm that has helped to motivate the team. Although this was not the volleyball team ' s best season, it did manage to beat its arch rival, South High, in every game played against that team. Captains Leigh Bleiweiss and Kim Salvi helped to keep the team together through the rigorous practices that were held every day after school, and even though it was hard work, the team members were all able to co- operate and actually had a lot of fun this season. The members of the Spartan football team deserve a great deal of credit. They worked hard, and their record does not reflect what really mattered this season — the camaraderie. This year ' s Spartan strength was in the seniors — co-captains Jon Garvin and Dave Nims, Eric Kester, Ben Steiner, Jamie Dittami, Bill Power, Andy Buchman, and Jeremy Solemina. The Spartans welcomed Kim Garron this year — the first female to play on the football team. Although the guys had their doubts, Kim stayed and succeeded. During one game against Wellesley, she had three tackles and caused a fumble! The team is protective of Kim and also of each other. Also joining the football team this year was Bill Power who succeeded as the starting quarterback, although he had previously devoted his athletic abilities to tennis. The team shared many memorable moments. Who could forget. Jamie ' s 91 yard touchdown run during the Natick game? Jon ' s sack, causing a fumble, and holding Walpole back on their 4th and 1 attempt during the Thanksgiving Day game? Eric ' s catching 6 passes in the game against cross- town rival south? Ben ' s recovering a fumble during the Walpole game? Bill ' s 35-yard touchdown pass during the Milton game? Dave ' s two sacks and blocked extra point against Walpole? The team ' s ability to stay together, to work as a unit, and to support each other has been their biggest asset throughout the year. Bottom: J. Dittmai, E. Kester, B. Steiner, D. Nims, J. Garvin, B. People of all ages swim for fun, and it has been during the 1900 ' s that swimming has become a major com- petitive sport. Thousands of swimmers compete in meets held by schools, colleges, and swimming clubs. Swimming races have always been a highlight of the Summer Olympic Games. Good swimmers can also enjoy a number of other water sports. These include springboard and platform diving, water skiing, water polo, scuba diving, and synchronized swimming. Above all, the ability to swim may save a person ' s life during an emergency in the water. North High has a very high-spirited and team- oriented swim squad. Led by captains Jen Dublirer and Robin Taddeo, the swim team had a very busy and enjoyable season. Top (l-r): Coach Schwartzer, L. Fohlin, C. Kelley, S. Phillips, N. Redgate, A. Ghim, K. Cuniff, C. Despite a 2-5 season, the golf team has a strong future. Only one team member, Brian Waldman, will be leaving us at the end of this year, so we look forward to a maturing, improving team. We lost our first three matches, but then we had a victory over Dedham High. Our next match was at Milton, and we all feared the worst, knowing that playing at an away course is always difficult. However, as the first of our four groups finished playing, we were ahead by four points. The next group lost by one and one-half points and the third group tied. With the fourth group playing the last hole, we were ahead by two and one-half points. We alJ watched breathlessly as co-captain Adam Winik and his partner holed-out. When we discovered that they had won by one-half point, we were ecstatic; we had finally proved our- selves! Top (1-r): P. Quinn, C. Cheng, J. Lerman, A. Winik, B. Waldman, T. Carbeau, G. E From the South scrimmage shut-out, To the Walpole game where we had a reason to shout — From the Braintree jamboree, To the South game where we beat them one to three — We did it together as a team, With coaches giving a yell or a scream. They ran us up and down long hills, But it was worth it for all the thrills. To Gina, our goalie, you saved us enough And to the team for always hanging tough. Good luck next year to Gigi, Berta, Carol, and the rest. Love ya — Sue Krueger, Shoshy Starr, and Chris Fitts. You all deserve the best! Back Row (1-r): G. Demeo, C. Winett, G. Bacon, M. Faiman, R. Yet, the team itself probably deserves more recognition because cross country is perhaps one of the most difficult sports. As a runner, one must not only race against the opponent but also against himself. There is no one to blame if a race is lost or practice wasted. No one, that is, but yourself. Cross coun- try is an individual sport that helps instill confidence within yourself upon achieving personal goals, and the members of the cross country team have learned that val- uable lesson. The Spartans ' chances for a winning season were hurt early in the year when junior center Shelly Hughes was injured. Despite strong efforts by juniors Allison Chamrin, Lori Vengrow, and Lisa Cronin, the Spartans failed to qualify for a tournament berth. Some highlights of the season included close games against South, Natick, and Dedham. Brought up from the junior-varsity team, sophomore Hava Leipzig, pleasantly surprised her new teammates with helpful performances. Although the team did not have a very successful season, hustle and determination were evident throughout the year. Top Row (1-r): M. Lau, Coach R. Lord, H. Leipzig, L. Cronin, L. Vengrow, A. Led by senior co-captains Brett Adams and Kevin Niessen, the Spartans defeated South, Natick, and defending State Champs Milton in the first ten games. Seniors Allen Kamer and Derek Sudbay, as well as junior three-point specialist Matt Dorsey, rounded out the starting five. The Spartans appeared to be heading for post-season play for the first time in eight years! The team ' s success was not only due to its members, but also to its coach Bruce Grealey. It was apparent that Coach Grealey ' s spirit and motivation were pres- ent even when he wasn ' t. This was especially true during one of the most exciting games of the season, North vs. Natick. Coach Grealey was sick and unable to attend the game, but the team, led by J.V. Coach Dean Bennett, managed a 61-57 win over Natick. It was not only Coach Bennett ' s night, but it was Matt Dorsey ' s night as well, for he scored 23 points, in- cluding two free throws with three seconds left in the game. Top Row (1-r): J. At first, the season did not appear to be very promising. Captain Amy Martin was the only re- turning varsity member of the team. However, soph- omores Laura and Gina Demeo, as well as freshman Jana Spickler, had the talent and determination to carry the team successfully through the season. The team ' s outstanding achievement was also due to the gymnastics coaches George Wheeler and Herb Weinbaum. Their support and motivation were cru- cial in getting a very young squad ready for com- petition with other, more seasoned teams. The highlight of the season was the Bay State meet with Braintree, the Spartans ' biggest gymnastics rival. The team ' s determination and poise were translated into high scores and yet another championship for the Spartans. Congratulations, girls! Top Row (l-r): Asst. Coach Weinbaum, A. Martin, L. Returning varsity members were sophomore Brian DeOliveira and senior captain Mi- chael Bertone, while newcomers to the team were freshmen Miles Block, Scott Clatur, Matt Hanlon, Todd Seiffer, and senior Jonathan Seiffer. Both Mi- chael Bertone and Brian DeOliveira were key all- around performers, presenting routines on each of the six events (floor exercise, pommel horse, horizontal bar, parallel bars, vault, and rings), whose efforts won more than half of the total team score. Jon Seiffer was a quick learner and performed skilled routines on floor exercise, pommel horse, horizontal bar, and parallel bars. The talented freshmen filled the remaining spots on each event to round out the total team score. Each gymnast had his own specialty event: for Mike Bertone it was the horizontal bar, for Brian DeOliveira and Matt Hanlon it was floor exercise, for Jon Seiffer, Todd Seiffer, and Miles Block it was pommel horse, while parallel bars were Scott Clatur ' s specialty. During the next three years these four freshmen will be the foun- dation of a strong Spartan gymnastics team. Meeting the Demands Top Row (1-r): B. DeOliveira, M. Bertone, J. Seiffer, Coach J. Naticchioni. Bottom: M. Hanlon, M. Block, T. Seiffer. No Holds Barred! Even though the wrestling team did not have a win- ning season, they showed character and spirit as they compiled a 8-10-1 record. Especially important this sea- son, under the leadership of captains Chris Moeder, Roger Alkroft, and Scott Hakulin, was North ' s victory over their arch-rivals, South, in an exciting 42-22 contest. Most of the team ' s losses were suffered at the beginning of the season, and the improvements of the first-year wrestlers since then has been extraordinary. Also, many of the returning veteran wrestlers have made great im- provement, especially Chris Mason, who placed second at the Framingham North Holiday Tournament. The future appears bright. The wrestling team is losing only one senior, Scott Hauklin. With this, the North team appears destined for a Sectional Championship in 1990. They can only wait until then. North ' s track team underwent a 0-10 season, but it had a lot of inspiration from tri-captains Phil Burton, James Dittami, and Nicole Vassar. James Dittami went undefeated in the 40-yard dash and in the 300- yard dash. Phil Burton was having his best season, but he pulled a muscle three quarters of the way through the season, preventing him from participating in the later competitions. The three captains will compete at the state meet, and James Dittami, Paul Burton, Lindsay Heughan, and Scooter Johnson, all partic- ipated in the B.U. relays. The girls ' track team had a decent season due to the efforts of Nicole Vassar and Marie Kiladis. The team had a lot of fun this season, and practicing in the school s hallways was an adventure. Top Row (l-r): Coach Keegan, H. Gangi, C. Lind, J. Caporale, M. Yeomans, M. Brown, P. Burton, P. Banks, K. Meadows, T. Kates, E. Gubaie, L. Seigal, Coach O ' Rourke. Middle: M. Dunlop, M Kiladis, G. Tsai. 74 Goaltending Leads the Way The strongest part of this year ' s hockey team was the goaltending of seniors Dave Hessel and Phil Ian tosca who helped to keep the team in the games. In a few games, they had to make more than fifty saves. It was their skill and quick-thinking that kept the team from suffering severe losses. North ' s hockey team is very young, comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores. Only three mem- bers are leaving at the end of this year, the two goalies and senior Brad Reynolds. The next few years seem to be promising, since almost all of the scoring has come from the freshmen and sophomores. With a few more years of experience, North ' s ice hockey team will competitively contend in the Bay State League once again. The team wishes to thank Coach Steve O ' Neill, whose constant enthusiasm helped to raise the team ' s morale. Coach O ' Neill, who notched his fortieth win as head coach, may have a Bay State title in the making. Top Row (1-r): Coach Steve O ' Neil, Captains M. Brodney and B. Reynolds, Asst. Coach J. Dacey. 76 Making Waves This year ' s swim team did not have a very successful season. Although the swimmers worked hard and practiced frequently, the lack of team members and the loss of coach Lois Schwartz caused team morale to hit a low point. Hopefully, the upcoming year will provide a chance for a better season. Although the team as a group did not fare well in competitions, there were many outstanding individual performances, such as Josh Bregman ' s assorted races and Mark Waldman ' s 200 ' individual medley. Brian Cinque turned out impressive performances in the 500 ' free style and helped the team greatly in other races. Winning all of his races, Mike McCarthy con- tinued to show his great potential as he has through the past four years. Chris Moran was outstanding in the breaststroke, while Scott Rubant had many ex- ceptional performances in the 400 ' free relay. Seniors Jed Alpert and Mike Aronson also added to the team ' s spirit. Ail in all, the season was fun for those who participated. Top Row (1-r): Coach Quinn.J. Zibbell, C. Dottin, D. Braithwaite, W. Sidham, B. Hicks, D. Checkoway, C. Murray, Coach Schwartz. Bottom: C. Can you remember the anxiety you felt — Where are my classes? Why do I keep getting called ' frosh ' ? Are the seniors go- ing to beat me up? What about those ridiculous assigned studies? Re- member how you used to get a pass to the library and then skip out to the cafe — all the while hoping that your study teacher wouldn ' t check up on you — yet trying to play it cool because you were skipping study. Can you remember trying to figure out when to go to which lunch? What about Mrs. Mathieson ' s wel- come cheer at orientation — 1989 will shine! Miraculously, we sur- vived and became sophomores — or wise fools, thinking we were so much better than the new freshmen. Can you remember trying to pick out your class ring? How about the steering committee meetings? Our first dance — the Ring Dance — (What was the theme???) . . . Battle of the Bands (What year did our class win?) . . . the Billy Joel concert . . . class rank for the first time . . . Then came the pressure year when we were juniors. We were fi- nally upperclassmen, but we faced PSAT ' s, the actual SAT, and the Achievement Tests . . . the Cotillion — our first semi-formal — I Had the Time of My Life — Hollywood Think back to September 1988 — you thought to yourself, Senior Year — What a snap! And then you looked at college and job ap- plications and probably wanted to crawl into a hole for the next six months. But we ' ve all survived and here we are — finally seniors — enjoying the slowly lightening work load, the anticipation of the fun that ' s ahead, and feeling the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes from working as hard as we have. I will miss my best girlfriend when I am not at school next September I have finished Framingham North High School. T JLt is taily amazing that we seniors, who have shared many of the same experiences and interests over the past four years, would choose so many diverse paths to follow after graduation. Some of us have chosen to attend four-year colleges, such as Columbia, the University of New Hampshire, Tufts, Harvard, Bates, Framingham State, the University of Massachusetts, Brandeis, the Uni- versity of Wisconsin, and Ithaca College. Othet students will be going to two-year colleges, such as Mass Bay Community College and Dean Junior College, and still others will be attending college prep schools. There are also those students who will go to specialized schools, such as the Barbizon School. While these students have opted to continue their education in a classroom situation, there are others who have decided to enter directly into the work force. Some popular fields include retail, banking, and fashion design. Several students are interested in jobs in public service, such as working for the police department or the fire department. Others plan to open their own businesses or restaurants, while a few people plan to work solely for themselves and become free-lance artists and writers. There are also those students who are planning to join the military after graduating. Other students have no definite plans for the next year. They have decided to take a year off and roam the beaches, the ski slopes, or wherever their hearts desire. Others have plans for marriage and family. While many of us have chosen different routes to follow after the crossroads of high school, we will not forget the influence that Framingham North High School has had on our futures and we look forward to sharing our new adventures with one another at our up- coming reunions. 133 Jeremy Miller was a bright, popular young man. He seemed to like everyone, but he had a few close friends. With that core group of friends he liked to spend weekends at the mall or in the movie theater, playing basketball or wrestling. However, his greatest enjoyment came from his love of motorcycles. He was a skillful rider, and he won most of the races that he entered. A true friend, Jeremy was there for anyone who wanted to discuss a problem. His smile could brighten up anyone ' s day, and his cheerful outlook on life made classes with him an enjoyable experience for other students. His nature was to show love and kindness to everyone he knew. Jeremy ' s friends miss him very much and hope that he is never forgotten. They are sure that Jeremy would wish us all a successful graduation, and they ask us to keep our mem- ories of him alive in our minds. SUPERLATIVES Every year, the seniors choose classmates who best ex- emplify the various qualities of their class. The yearbook staff selects about a dozen categories that describe the senior class. Some of the qualities traditionally used are Most In- telligent, Most Athletic, and Most Spirited. The seni- ors are then given the opportunity to select students who they believe epitomize each one. The winners of the election are featured in the yearbook. This year ' s winners are repre- sentatives of what makes the Class of 1989 unique. The majority of students remain in the school to participate in various after-school activities, which range from ac- ademics to the arts to community service. Most students belong to more than one club, and it is not uncommon to see kids running to one meeting, staying for a few minutes, and then running to another. However, belonging to more than one club does not mean that students do not keep a commitment to all their activities. Obviously, the more a person likes a certain activity, the more he or she will become involved with it, but there are some clubs for which a constant com- mitment is absolutely required (i.e., the year- book). Although these types of clubs require hard work, it is usually a rewarding experience. Putting a commitment into a club teaches stu- dents responsibility and dedication. Students also learn how to organize both themselves and their time in order to make each meeting as productive as possible. As these students or- ganize themselves, they learn how to develop good interpersonal relationships based on co- operation and trust. Students learn how to deal with the public as well, especially when well- known figures come to speak with the clubs and when the students actually go into the com- munity on such occasions as Student Govern- ment Day. If one should ask any student why he belongs to these after-school activities, the response would automatically be, It looks good on col- lege applications. However, if one persisted, he might find out that some students actually like belonging to clubs. For one thing, clubs give students a chance to meet new people and develop new friendships. Students can discuss their shared interests while learning to enjoy things they might not normally even think of doing. In other words clubs are fun. Another benefit of after-school activities is that they give students a chance to interact with teachers (who serve as club advisors) on a more personal basis. The advisors often show a side of themselves that isn ' t seen in a classroom sit- uation, and they can provide students with guidance and free advice. At the very least, students like clubs because they often have field trips, allowing students to (legally) miss a day of school. These field trips provide students with new experiences in new places, such as theaters, museums, and even the State House. Though it does take some work, an after- school activity can be an enjoyable experience, helping students to develop new qualities and providing memories to last a lifetime. I ' This truth keep in sight — every man on the planet Has just as much right as yourself to the road. — John Boyle O ' Reilly The Rainbow ' s Treasure St. 5 144 c T I V I T I E S ACADEMIC HONORS NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS Anton Cooper, Julie Davis. Missing: Daniel Alpert, Martin Bernstein. The National Merit Letters of Commendation are given to students every year in recognition of their outstanding performance on the PSAT. There are approximately 35,000 Commended Students nationwide, and all of them show exceptional academic promise. Being named a Commended Student is a credit to the student, his or her parents, and the school he or she attends. BOOK AWARDS L to R: Julie Dimilla, Greg Tananbaum, Susan Dumais, Wendy Derman. Book awards are given out every year by colleges and uni- versities that wish to commend high school juniors and seniors on their outstanding achievements. These awards can be strictly for academic achievement, as was the Dartmouth College Book Award (given to Julie DiMilla); for academic achievement and community service, as was the Holy Cross Book Award (given to Susan Dumais); or for a particular type of special achievement, as was the Wheelock College Book Award for outstanding work with children (given to Kimberly Carr). No matter what the particular reason is for the giving of the book award, every student who receives one of these awards should feel honored that he has been recognized by a college or university for his achievement, and he should also feel proud that all of his hard work has finally paid off. An esprit de corps developed as the team learned to work together and become a cohesive unit. There have been long hours of work, but many happy memories will remain after the ribbons fade and the trophies become dusty. The Academic Decathlon team consists of juniors and seniors who are interested in academic competition. There are nine members to a team, which are divided into three groups: the A group, the B group, and the C group, with three members in each group. Categorization of the com- petitors into each group is based on their grade point average, with the members of the A group having an A average, etc. The Academic Decathlon team is coached by Mr. Hawley, a new teacher to the Framingham school system. The first competition was held on Saturday, November 19, at Fra- mingham North High. It was a day-long event, consisting of tests in math, science, social science, economics, language and literature, fine arts, and a Super Quiz on a certain topic. This year ' s topic was the Presidency. North ' s team did very well for its first year, winning seven medals, placing sixth out of thirty-seven schools, and receiving the trophy for the Best Rookie School. The Academic Decathlon team would like to thank Mr. Hawley for his enthusiasm, which remained constant even when we had doubts. He worked harder than any of us, and at least as much credit is due him as us, if not more. This question has an answer? Victory! Tension, tension, tension. ' MATH LEAGUE Top Row (I to r): D. The first thing we thought was how great membership in N.H.S. would look on a college application. We figured that our names would rest on a plaque in some display case, and if anyone asked if we belonged to the National Honor Society, we would nonchalantly answer, Yes. To our great surprise, we discovered that N.H.S. was just as much an activity and a responsibility as any other club. As a result of our involvement, we had many memorable experiences. Through SMARC, we volunteered to keep score for the Bowleros, and we learned that retarded citizens are an asset to the community. The Spaghetti Supper provided dinner for all the playgoers who were waiting to see the PACERS ' winter production. Our Blood Drive was a success; many students and faculty members willingly donated their blood, and most will admit that it wasn ' t that painful. The school-wide tradition of the Holiday Drive continued with our efforts, and through the N.H.S. tutoring program, many students received extra help with their studies and were able to bring up their grades. Once again, we welcomed another class, the Class of 1992, to the Honor Society with our March induction ceremony. As we seniors reach our crossroads between high school and whatever the future holds for us, we choose the direction in which to travel. We leave North and our newly-made friends behind; we can only hope that we also leave behind to our younger members the enthusiasm and the desire to serve that we all tried to demonstrate. Students are able to act, direct, con- struct sets, usher, and participate in a variety of other onstage and offstage activities. Commitment in the group can range from ushering for a single play to having the lead roles in several performances. Three productions are put on by the PACERS each year. The first of these is the Competitive Plays, which takes place in the fall. Each class performs a short play, directed by a member of that class. The Competitive Plays gives students in the same class a chance to join together on the stage, and it gives the audience a chance to show its class school spirit. The second production is the Winter Play, which takes place in December or January. The partici- pants have performed comedies, dramas, and mys- teries. This year, we enjoyed Don ' t Drink the Water. The third production, and probably the most popular one, is the Spring Musical, which takes place in early May. Annie will give students a chance to sing and dance as well as act, and there will be a great number of students eager to try out fot roles or for the chorus. The PACERS would like to extend a Thank you and Good Luck to their advisor of more than twenty years, Mr. Henry Schlickman, who recently retired. They would also like to express their appreciation to Mrs. Margaret Connelly, who has been directing the PACERS ' plays for several years. FNHS PACERS presents Woody Allen ' s : don ' t : . DRINK . Compets was a great time to show off your talents, whether they lay in acting, directing, or working backstage. This year ' s plays were especially unique, because each director chose a play that genuinely reflected the personality of his class. The winning play as Inside Out, performed by the class of 1990. The juniors did a fantastic job of presenting this comedy drama about life as an adolescent. Every year, many actors and actresses have been recognized for their hard work and talent by being members of the All-Star Cast. This year ' s members were: Nate Sisitsky ( 92), Jessica Bell C9D, Dan Levine ( ' 90), Jessi Moran ( 90), Becky Freeman ( ' 90), and Kann Huang C89). Best Actress went to Kristen Dykeman ( ' 90), and Best Actor went to Rich Resnick, ( ' 89). These kids were really special — congratulations, guys!! The 1988 Competitives were also a time to say goodbye to Mr. Schlickman, who retired this year after many years of hard work in PACERS. His help and guidance will really be missed. There was basically only one thing to say about Competitives: I laughed, I cried, I loved it!!! It was better than CATS !!! I ' ll go to see it again and again and again!!! Back row: R. Sidell, B. K. The Music Club consists of kids who are interested in listening to and discussing music, from classical to jazz to rock to New Age. Members are exposed to some of classical music ' s finest points when they attend the Boston Symphony Orchestra each year. It is a cultural experience that is enhanced by the fact that those who attend are able to go out to lunch legally! All in all, the activities of the Music Club are very noteworthy (no pun intended). Also musically involved at FNHS are the Marching Band and the Madrigal Choir. No football game would be complete without North ' s enthusiastic band. The band plays at all games and is a great morale booster for North. Although we may not always win, FNHS ' s March- ing Band helps us keep our spirits high. The Madrigal Choir is a little-known facet of music life at North. Led by Mr. Whittaker, Mads consists of a small group of vocalists who perform early American and European music a capella. Par- ticipating in the Madrigal Choir really gives one a sense of ac- complishment; some of the notes are so high that it is a major achievement simply to be able to reach them!!! Even if one is not musically inclined, there is a far more enjoyable aspect of the Music Club. From band members to A capella singers to those who just enjoy music, HI 28 is the school ' s living room. At any given period, one can always find friendly conversation there. Trivial Pursuit, drumstick baseball, and the wishing light are just a few of the pastimes well known to the music room groupies. MUSIC MUSIC CLUB Bottom Row (1 to r): Advisor Mr. Whittaker, J. Its goal is to increase awareness and provide patronage for a wide variety of local and national non-profit organiza- tions. This year, the Key Club held fun- draisers for, among others, the Samaritans and the American Heart As- sociation. We also sponsored a young Philippine girl through the Christian Children ' s Fund, donated clothing to the Pine Street Inn Shelter, and participated in the Holiday Drive. In addition, the Key Club donated time and money to such in-school projects as the Open House and the monthly Parents ' Meet- ings. The Key Club is proud that it is able to help students to develop good citizenship practices. Top Row (1-r): K. Pudelko, L. Flaherty, M. Zimmerman, K. Carr, A. Lari, D. Rain, A. Siddiqui, C. STUDENTS AGAINST DRIVING DRUNK North High ' s chapter of S.A.D.D. was founded just two years ago. It is pan of a national or- ganization whose sole purpose is to prevent all students from driving while under the influence of alcohol. S.A.D.D. hopes to achieve this goal by educating students about the perils of driving drunk and by publicizing its consequences. S.A.D.D. encourages srudents and their parents to sign the Contract for Life, ' ' in which the student vows to call the parent if he has been drinking or if he has been with someone who has been drinking, and the parent agrees to pick him up or call for a taxi. S.A.D.D. also approves of having a Designated Driver, who is a person who agrees not to drink when with a group of friends; he will thus be able to drive his friends home if they are intoxicated. S.A.D.D. does not endorse or approve of the drinking of alcohol by minors, but it does feel that it is necessary to prevent the loss of lives that will occur if one does attempt to drive after drinking. North High ' s S.A.D.D. chapter has sponsored an assembly to instruct students about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol and also has initiated the Tie One On campaign which encourages students to tie a red ribbon on the driver ' s sideview mirror rather than imbibe in al- cohol. It is different from XPRESS and the North Star because its primary concern does not involve a publication. The members have more time to think, write, and talk. Emphasis is given to critiquing, brainstorming, and educating writers in publication techniques. During weekly meetings, students can discuss their problems in essays and creative writing as- signments for school. Encouragement and sugges- tions to make these assignments better are given by other club members and the club advisor, Mr. Fortier. The club also works on extra-curricular assignments, such as writing for contests and for personal satisfaction. Advisor Henry Fortier, D. Katz, B. Cosby, J. Zibel, President K. Johnson, J. Epstein. Cheng, B. Humphrey, J. Lerman, D. Katz, B. Cosby. Club Advisor is Mr. Hawley. THE NORTH STAR Framingham North High ' s newspaper, The North Star, is probably one of the school ' s best kept secrets. Less than 1% of the student body belongs to the staff of the newspaper, and it is probable that less than 1% of the student body even knows that the newspaper exists. Despite this apparent lack of interest, The North Star does manage to come out about four times a year, and although each issue may not exactly tesemble a real newspaper, it is obvious that students put a great deal of time and effort into the paper. Since so few srudents belong to the newspaper staff, it is necessary for everyone to participate in all the aspects of producing a newspaper. Meetings are held every Tuesday afternoon in Mrs. Whittaker ' s room, where students discuss ideas for articles. Both Mrs. Whittaker and Mrs. Leonard, the advisors to the paper, contribute suggestions and advice, but ultimately it is up to the students to decide the topics about which they will write. Generally, the articles deal with school news, activity news, sports, and entertainment. Ed- itorials are also a common sight in the paper. Once the articles are written, and checked by the ad- visors, they are printed on a school computer. The next step in the process is layout, in which students cut and paste the articles in the shape of a newspaper page. This layout is then sent to North ' s Industrial Arts Department, where it is printed out. These finished copies are then given to the staff members, who sell them to the student body. The profits are used to purchase more supplies for the newspaper, such as paper and ink. To belong to the staff of The North Star, one needs the qualities of dedication and cooperation, in addition to some writing ability. On the plus side, belonging to the newspaper staff provides great experience to any student who is con- sidering a career in journalism. It also gives a student a sense of pride because he knows that he is communicating in- formation to fellow students which will both inform and entertain them. RTH STAR Top Row (1-r): L. Andler, P. The club participates in a variety of activities that ranges from entertainment to service and that reaches out to both the school and the Framingham community. Some of the most well-known events sponsored by the Student Council include the Battle of the Bands, Staff Appreciation Week, the Student of the Month program, Student Government Day, and the extremely successful Holiday Drive. The Student Council also sponsors the school elections and provides scholarships to deserving students who have shown a great ded- ication to the club. A student can become a member of the Student Council in one of two ways: He can be voted into the group by current members of the Council, or he can attend two thirds of the Student Council meetings and gradually become a member of the group. Meetings are held frequently because of the great number of activities in which the club participates. A student who belongs to the student Council is a student with a large amount of commitment and responsibility; he is also a student who has a very good chance of doing great things in the future. The class officers stand as heads of the Steering Committee, and this year, President Julie DiMilla, Vice-President Kim Salvi, Secretary Bonnie Berger, and Treasurer Mike Yaffe worked together quite well in effectively leading the group. The Steering Committee ' s main function is to plan and organize a variety of activities and to decorate for class and school events. Meetings are held prior to any major events that will occur in the school so that the Committee can help to plan and decorate for them. This is especially true for the school dances; the Steering Committee sets up a separate Dance Committee to help decorate and sell tickets for the occasion. One of the attributes of the Steering Committee is that it is open to anybody in the Senior Class who is interested in helping out with the activities. Thus, a wide variety of students belongs to the Steering Committee, and it is easy for students to make new friends. The time that the students have spent working on the Committee has taught them the value of qualities such as dedication, cooperation, and creativity; and it has also provided them with many happy memories. Each grade has its own steering committee, and each committee participates in many activities. One of the activities in which all the Steering Committees participate is the decorating for pep rallies. Students stay after school, painting signs for their class. Each Steering Committee also adopts a family during the Holiday Drive, and class mem- bers provide food, clothing, and toys for these less fortunate people. Steering Committees are also in charge of candy sales that provide funds for class projects. In addition to these activities, the Steering Com- mittee for each class also has sub-committees. Ex- amples of these committees are the Sophomores ' Ring Dance committee and the Juniors ' Cotillion Committee, both of which made plans and dec- orations for those special dances. Some of the sub- committees get involved in community projects, such as the Sophomores ' Hope Committee, which spent a Saturday with some homeless children. All of these committees will carry on the tra- dition of school spirit that has made North High what it is today. COLOR GUARDS Top (1-r): L. Conlon, E. Noyes, J. Israelson, J. Young, K. Frederick, W. The History Club participates in many field trips to historical places, including Fanueil Hall, Sturbridge Village, and Salem. By visiting these places students are able to obtain a taste of the heritage which has made America what it is today. Besides field trips, the History Club participates in other activities, such as programs with guest speakers, group discussions, and community service; for example, the Holiday Drive. This year the History Club had some very in- teresting discussions relating to the elec- tion of a new President and the issues and qualifications of all the candidates. This culminated in a school-wide mock election sponsored by the History Club, in which Michael Dukakis won the po- sition of President. Top Row (1-r): A. Seale, J. Foster, J. Zibel, H. Leipzig, K. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL The International Relations Club is one of the newest additions to the already extensive list of after-school activities at Framingham North High. The I.R. Club is an open forum in which students can express views on a variety of subjects re- lating to our nation and its position as a world power. Meetings usually consist of discussions about current world events, and at some meetings, guest speakers are invited to express their opinions on the topics of discussion. Debates are also held so that both sides of an issue can be equally expounded. This year an Amnesty International stu- dent group was set up in affiliation with the I.R. Club. The purpose of Amnesty International is to participate in a variety of different programs to free prisoners of conscience, to ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, and to stop torture and executions. Both the I.R. Club and A.I. are open to all students, and both groups will provide them with experiences that will help them to develop into politically conscious and politically active adults. The Spanish Club, Junior Classical League, French Club, and Italian Club offer students a variety of activities pertaining to foreign languages. Field trips are a common activity within all the foreign language club.-. Students are able to visit places that will give them a wider understanding of the languages that they are studying. For example, the Spanish Club went to a Spanish ballet this year. Parties are also a common occurrence in the foreign language clubs, with the most popular party being the International Holiday Fiesta, sponsored by all the clubs. The foreign language clubs also participate in a number of other activities, such as holding fundraisers and adopt- ing families for the Holiday Drive. Special events are also held, such as the Italian Club ' s I Paesani. THE ARCHON The Anhon staff is a conglomeration — a melange, perhaps — of people, each going off in a different direction, each with his own ideas. We are a diverse group but with a common purpose and commitment. Our staff room F202 is usually buzzing with noise — people arguing ideas, gossiping about school, working furiously to meet a deadline. We have learned about ourselves and each other through working on this yearbook. We have learned how to compromise even when we don ' t feel like it, for we realize no staff membet is more important than another. Everyone performs significant and necessary jobs. Although there has been stress, and sometimes we ' ve just wanted to give up, we have persevered, and the better times have all but erased the rough ones. There have been many laughs and always something to be excited over (getting the first layout back from the publisher, losing and then finding the magic tissue, seeing the final product, and hearing the comments of our peers). Time spent on this memoir has been enjoyable. We have shared our talents and done what we are best at or enjoy most in order to produce a yearbook which covers our class ' achievements and interests and which reflects the uniqueness of the Class of 1989 We are proud of our accomplishment, but not in a haughty or superior sense. It is a shared pride — the kind you feel when you have been a part of a huge effort and can step back when it ' s over and say, I helped make this. It is a pride we all share, and it will last for years to come. Top (1-r): L. Shevrin (Adv.), C. Joshi, S. Chitow, E. Mendez, C. Moran, K. Dickey, J. Berger, S. Teel, D. Bacon, J. Seiffer, C. Dumais, J. Greenbaum, A. Bassett. CLASS OF 1990 CLASS of 1991 CLASS of 1992 I .t seems as though the business of students at North High over the past four years has been spending money. We have purchased school rings, school jack- ets, tickets to school plays and dances, and jvarious other school paraphernalia (i.e., bumper stickers, boxer shorts, etc.). Outside of school, we have bought clothes, cars, and many other things, and we have spent a great deal of money on various forms of entertainment, such as movie and concert tickets. Although North High students do spend a lot of money on themselves, they also have the spirit of giving. For in- stance, every year during the Holiday Drive, students reach deep into their hearts and their wallets to donate money to provide food, clothing, and toys for the less fortunate people in the com- munity. There is always some sort of worthwhile cause to which students ea- gerly donate their money. How do students get all this money? While some students receive allowances from their parents, the majority of stu- dents must go into the work force. Stu- dents work everywhere — shopping malls, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. They work after school, during the week- ends, and during summer vacations in order to pay for all their necessities. Although much of this hard-earned money is spent on recreation, many stu- dents are also saving some money for college. It is hard to balance school work with a job, and it is also hard to save money for college when the media is coaxing you to Buy, buy, buy! Despite these problems, the majority of students man- age to reach a happy medium between school and work, and spending and sav- ing; and by doing this, they are obtaining a sense of responsibility that will be valuable in later life. 1 It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness. — Lucius Annaeus Seneca Epistles CONGRATULATIONS to the Class of 1989 GOOD LUCK — AND — BEST WISHES ALFRED E. Family Living — Mock Marriages — Monday, May 1, 1989 Fashion Show — May 23, 1989 14 Spartans Stun Natick One of the greatest moments of the 1989 baseball season occurred when the Framingham Spartans de- feated the Natick Redmen with an 11-9 win. This event marked the first time in eight years that North had defeated its archrival Natick. The Spartans two five-run innings combined with the pitching and fielding of Mike Dalto to propel North to this stunning triumph. Bottom: Teamwork Leads to Success The girls ' lacrosse team was highly successful this spring, earning its way into the EMASS Division II semifinals. This is the first girls ' lacrosse team from North High ever to achieve such an honor. The team is proud to honor six all-star players: Jen Dublirer, Dawn Blodgett, Kristen Schlueter, Allison Chamrin, Jessica Winship, and Lori Vengrow. Many valuable lessons about commitment were learned on the field as captains Kristen Schleuter, Dawn Basoli, and Dawn Blodgett led the team through three-hour practices every day, regardless of the weather. The season proved to be as exciting as it was emotional. As players reached to achieve personal goals, obstacles such as Jessica Winship ' s and Alii Chamrin ' s injuries, the outcome dimmed, r esulting in some frustration.
