CAFETERIA STAFF: Mary Cordelia, Edward Rowan, Marie Lawson, Nell Oldum, Joan Goddard, Laura Fio Rito, Eileen Svensson, Gladys Gibbs, Alzada Munyon, Florence Gay, Arlene Medeiros, Eleanor Bartolini, Charlotte Doherty, I ng rid Kirk, Kay Plourde, Mary Wamboldt, Marta Carlson, Rose Dufault, Alice Anderson, Helen Sawyer (Director). The Lunch lines may be long, but un- derstandably so, ' for in all the Framing- ham schools over seven thousand six hundred students are served a day. Pro- gram director Miss Helen Sawyer, with her staff, plans the meals to contain no less than one-third of daily nutrient re- quirements, with enough variety for in- terest. This year the price was raised from twenty-five to thirty cents when operation costs began to tax available funds. The noon program is supported in part by sales and in part by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. It uses twelve thousand one-half pint cartons of millc daily; enough to keep more than eight and three-fourths cows busy for three and seven-eighths days. Mr. Rowan

JKain ten an ce The Medical Department, to many students is simply a competent group consisting of a doctor and group of nurses in navy blue. The of- fice where they are located is a haven when illness or accident strikes. Occasionally it has been used as a hoped- for escape-hatch for erring students. However, only rare- ly has this escape trick been successful, as nurses have a remarkable nose for such stu- dents. Actually, an interested stu- dent would find that duties and responsibilities of the Medical Department are many and varied, and that the application of ice-packs and dispensing of band-aids is only a small part. Most im- portant of these is the health counseling of pupils; next is the assisting of parents in any health problems of their chil- dren. On a broader scale, the effective Medical Department is a curriculum in health prob- lems, the consultant on school building and grounds sanita- tion and safety, and finally a health resource and adminis- trative assistant on health problems for the entire school community. There is more to South High than meets the eye: behind the calm exterior, four thousand two hundred sixty lockers need to be kept in repair; fifteen hundred gallons of oil a day in three boilers heat students to seventy degrees Fahrenheit; twenty-two acres of grass grow to be mowed in the summer. Handling both the routines and crises of keeping South running, the Maintenance Department covers collectively several miles in halls a day. Arriving at 6:30 each morning, Mr. Everett Mailman directs his staff in taking care of everything from combi- nation locks to mixers in the cafeteria, from routine repairs to preparation of the gym for a rally. When one boiler kicks out, maintenance kicks it in again; otherwise learning might be a cold business at times.
