WHITE Director of Pupil Personnel Services FRAMINSHAM SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL 3 I Flagg Drive Framingham, Mass. 01701 TO MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1967: A great deal of unwarranted criticism is being directed toward the youth of today. The statements are grossly unfair because they are directed or leveled at all our young people when they apply to only a very small percentage of them. This troublesome group was with us years ago; we will always have with us this small percentage that causes difficulties and unrest, not only in our youth group but in our adult population. It is unfortunate that these critics are not in a position to observe some of the great accomplishments of the youth of today. They would marvel at the ability and talent shown by our young people in musical productions, such as the Regional and State Music Educators ' Concerts, and the work which they produce for art exhibits. Their knowledge of scientific phenomena and demonstrations of scientific principles would surprise them at a science fair. Their poise and skill of presentation, debating or in a drama, would prove most enjoyable and enlightening. Their knowledge of math- ematical principles in a course on computers would leave them very confused. The scholastic and athletic records of the students of today compare most favorably with those of the past. It is most unfair to condemn the great majority of the youth of today for the undesirable acts and unrest caused by a small minority. The class of 1967 is a part of this very fine group of young people of the present day. Its achievements are many and varied and the quality of these achievements may rightly be a source of pride to the class members, their parents and their teachers. We sincerely wish you, the class of 1967, every success in the work that you under- take and happiness throughout your life. Sincerely, Ralph J. Martin, Principal FRAMINGHAM SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL 3 I Flagg Drive Framingham, Mass. 01701 Fellow Members of the Class of 1967: The past four years have flown by quickly for us, and it is now that we fully realize the responsibilities and burdens that are ahead of us. Adults tell us it ' s a cold, cruel world, but I am sure that each of us is fully capable of meeting it. Our last four years have been designed to make us able men and women, ready to challenge and explore all facets of our new and growing world. Whatever occupation we may choose, be it doctor, lawyer, athlete, engineer, or soldier, I ' m sure that we all can be successful if we try. Since we are the first class to graduate after four years at Framingham South High School, we must set a precedent for those who come after us to follow. Thanks to our fine school system and administration, we have been guided in how to meet the various challenges ahead of us. If we adhere to our principles and those things which have been instilled in us, we will do credit to our class and our school, as well as to our parents and ourselves. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow classmates for allowing me to represent them as President of the Class of ' 67. I would especially like to thank our principal, Mr. Martin, and Mrs. Savas, our advisor, for the help and guidance they have given us in the past four years. Sincerely, Brian Hastings You don ' t look sick to me, says Mrs. Restighini as Ellis Bryant reports to Medical. JKain ten an ce The Medical Department, to many students is simply a competent group consisting of a doctor and group of nurses in navy blue. The of- fice where they are located is a haven when illness or accident strikes. Occasionally it has been used as a hoped- for escape-hatch for erring students. However, only rare- ly has this escape trick been successful, as nurses have a remarkable nose for such stu- dents. Actually, an interested stu- dent would find that duties and responsibilities of the Medical Department are many and varied, and that the application of ice-packs and dispensing of band-aids is only a small part. Most im- portant of these is the health counseling of pupils; next is the assisting of parents in any health problems of their chil- dren. On a broader scale, the effective Medical Department is a curriculum in health prob- lems, the consultant on school building and grounds sanita- tion and safety, and finally a health resource and adminis- trative assistant on health problems for the entire school community. JKedicaf Mrs. Gertrude M. Quirk, R.N. Supervisor of Nurses Mr. Mailman spurs on an ex- cited student body at the North rally. STAFF: Front Row: Patrick Daly. Gino Bonvini, John Woodrum; Second Row: Joseph Cinimo, Everett Mailman, Head Custodian: Chester Komola. and Mrs. Ida Ryan. There is more to South High than meets the eye: behind the calm exterior, four thousand two hundred sixty lockers need to be kept in repair; fifteen hundred gallons of oil a day in three boilers heat students to seventy degrees Fahrenheit; twenty-two acres of grass grow to be mowed in the summer. Handling both the routines and crises of keeping South running, the Maintenance Department covers collectively several miles in halls a day. Arriving at 6:30 each morning, Mr. Everett Mailman directs his staff in taking care of everything from combi- nation locks to mixers in the cafeteria, from routine repairs to preparation of the gym for a rally. When one boiler kicks out, maintenance kicks it in again; otherwise learning might be a cold business at times. Gafeieria We ' re all behind thirty cent lunches. ' It ' s still alive; kill it! CAFETERIA STAFF: Mary Cordelia, Edward Rowan, Marie Lawson, Nell Oldum, Joan Goddard, Laura Fio Rito, Eileen Svensson, Gladys Gibbs, Alzada Munyon, Florence Gay, Arlene Medeiros, Eleanor Bartolini, Charlotte Doherty, I ng rid Kirk, Kay Plourde, Mary Wamboldt, Marta Carlson, Rose Dufault, Alice Anderson, Helen Sawyer (Director). The Lunch lines may be long, but un- derstandably so, ' for in all the Framing- ham schools over seven thousand six hundred students are served a day. Pro- gram director Miss Helen Sawyer, with her staff, plans the meals to contain no less than one-third of daily nutrient re- quirements, with enough variety for in- terest. This year the price was raised from twenty-five to thirty cents when operation costs began to tax available funds. The noon program is supported in part by sales and in part by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. It uses twelve thousand one-half pint cartons of millc daily; enough to keep more than eight and three-fourths cows busy for three and seven-eighths days. Mr. Rowan SJn Cftppreciation SOPHIE SAVAS We, the Class of 1967, wish to express our thanks to Mrs. Sophie Savas for her genuine interest in us as a teacher and as a friend. Her understanding guidance and her sincere concern for the future of our class have given us the opportunity to make a worthy contribution to our school and to society. S7n Recognition MARY McMANUS To Miss Mary McManus, teacher of English at Framingham South High School for ten years, we extend our special recognition. Her forty years of service, teaching and guiding young people in three Massachusetts schools, were a rich contribution to education from which we are grateful to have benefited. J7 2 JKem or jam To the family, relatives, and friends of Mr. John Earl Clinton, we extend our deepest and most personal sympathy. A dedicated coach and teacher in the Framingham Public School System for thirty-two years, he contributed to many town government, civic, and sports organizations. His abrupt passing at the beginning of this year has sorrowed and bereaved us all. CjnofisJi Miss Lewis, Department Head Mrs. Baldwin Mrs. Flagg Mr. Hamilton Mrs. Heine Miss Hunter Ten thousand books tor Miss Lewis, English De- partment Head, to count and process in June. Is the world too much with us? No, there were two English classes in the stage ' s girls ' dressing room, almost one in the math lab, and a drama class in the auditorium. A new creative writing course be- gan producing authors, the Herald-Traveler Shake- speare repertoire brought Hamlet alive so he could Mrs. Clifford 18 Mr. Keville Miss Lathrop Mrs. McDuffie Miss O ' Neil die again, and three [uniors en- tered the N.C.T.E. writing contest. In the library, the English teacher resources kept the department ahead of the students for another year. In fact, so effective was the teaching of language, everybody went away speaking it fluently. 2) ep ar men Mrs. Oneschuk Miss Porter Mrs. Prim Miss Tait 19 Banjuage eparimeni Mr. Leveille Department Head The ideal place to learn a language is in the land speaking it. How- ever, because such an arrangement is impossible, the language depart- ment must be a workable substitute, even with a disadvantage of three thousand years or four thousand miles. Instruction of Latin, French, German, and Spanish is under the general direction of Mr. Leveille. Teachers conduct classes in the language being studied as much as possible. Classics, including Le Cid, Les Miserables, the Aeneid, and Le Tour de Monde exercise comprehension skill; and the language lab furthered conversational ability. After school four clubs operating under the department enriched verbs and nouns with cultural insight. The language corridor was never an Appian Way, or a Champs-Elysees, but it was the Latin Quarter for South. Mr. Friary Miss Vancavage Mrs. Smith Mr. Pointon I Mrs. Megas Mrs. Mack Mrs. Kamin Miss Gucciardi 20 Mr. Garrahan Department Head Mr. Christopher Garrahan and his Social Studies Department all believe in History. But unlike the Communists, who revere this same ideal, they are concerned with inter- esting students in the people and places of human society. To this end, courses ranging from Ancient and Medieval History to Sociol- ogy, Russian Studies to Economics are offered. In addition to the text, extra books are often assigned, speakers invited, and panel discus- sions held. Several of Mr. Kelley ' s classes held mock trials to study legal procedure; and un- der the only high school experimental program in the area, Mr. Zaido ' s geography classes featured a new urban approach. The United Nations scholarship contest in the spring of- fered outstanding students a chance to ex- hibit their knowledge. Facts were given inter- est and application: Washington braved the Potomac again, William had to conquer Eng- land once more, and Doctor Zhivago became consulting physician of the Russian Studies class. I Mr. Charles Mr. Daniels Social Mr. Flaherty Miss Janda Mr. Zaido Mr. Welch Mr. Ram Mr. Kelley 21 cience Mr. Clinton Mr. Gaucher . . . Tragedy also occurred; the skeleton in B-5 lost half a leg and an arm, many test tubes met their maker, and no physics student proved the Unified Field Theorem. At times the odor of sharks in biology laboratory threatened indiges- tion. But students learned principles, the scientific method, and, a lucky few, the Inverse Square Law. And what else is there to know? Weather-watching, dis- secting of earthworms, producing strange chem- ical odors, and tinkering with light: these activi- ties were all part of the science department. Dr. John Meegan coordinat- ed the teaching of gen- eral science, earth sci- ence, biology, chemistry, and physics classes. Not only study, but labora- tories, practical work, and, for biologists, tramps through nature were part of education. Mr. Jachowicz Mr. O ' Donnell Mr. Hester Mr. Tisde JKai iemaiics In a far corridor there is a whir: the minds of the math department in collective thought. No ' necessary mathematics was too simple, no cal- Mr. Antell, Department Head cuius too difficult for de- partment head Mr. Rus- sell Antell and his asso- ciates to communicate. Pre-algebra prepared some for algebra which, along with geometry, ex- plored the complexities of numbers; review courses refreshed memo- ries, and advanced courses attacked the deepest analytical thought. Mr. DiVittorio offered an after school computer course using the electronic brains at Computer Control Com- pany in Framingha ' m. Mathematics, through new methods and even field trips, was never so much like rolling off a logarithm. Mr. DiVittorio Mr. Galva ni Mr. Grandoni Mrs. Mitchell Mr. Palano Mr. Hebard Miss Lamperti Mr. Vodoklys Mrs. Williamson 23 Mr. Hatch, Department Head Mrs. DeCristoforo Mr. Kropp business Mrs. MacDonald Mr. Trevani Miss Stanton Happiness in the Business Department includes 72 manual typewriters, 36 electric typewriters, 5 kinds of 1 0-key printing calculators, rotary calculators, duplicators, copying machines — plus teachers that can tell them apart. The demand for typing skill has grown so fast that we have 300 students enrolled in typing classes, learning that asdf jkl; without looking is their immediate goal in life. Audio-visual aids in abundance are constantly in action, from records to overhead projectors to EDL controlled readers, even to Mr. Hatch ' s screwdriver and bent coat hanger for repairs. New this year is the typing pool for school activities under Mrs. Peckham. Business as usual is plainly the order of the day. Mrs. Peckham Mr. Murphy Miss McDonald 24 With a curriculum covering clothing to chefs, the Home Economics Department has grown out of its quarters near the cafeteria. So a Child Growth and Development class expanded into the boys ' dress- ing room. Whatever the loca- tion, the department, under the supervision of Mrs. Lillian Kreger, teaches courses in food and clothing, with pro- grams ranging from interior design to fashion design. Prac- tical work, guest speakers, and audio-visual aids supplemented academic study. Two hundred dozen eggs a year and two hundred pounds of flour at Christmas made food very real to cooking classes. There were the Betty Crocker Scholarship contest, and a Sterling Silver Award for the student with the best record of improve- ment. Student chefs visited a meat market, girls made Prom formals, and Mrs. Eldridge ' s class gave the annual faculty tea. For the lucky few, a soak- ing from a broken dish-wash- ing hose completed Practical Experience. (Ljconomics II ' IIH f Mrs. Whitten Miss Wiggins 25 Mr. Cotton, Director of Art Mr. Bagush Mr. Clancy Mr. Ritval 26 7irt Department In the art rooms student work is plainly visible on walls, doors, blackboards, and windows. Basics of art: paint, sculpture, carving, weav- ing, even advertising design are part of the curriculum directed by Mr. Neil Cotton. Each year, a stuffed owl and pheasant, used as models, become immortalized in hundreds of drawings; this year they were misplaced, briefly, to the grief of all involved. Inspiration came in Mr. Clancy ' s words, ut- tered over an incipient master- piece: It has possibilities. A few students returned for post graduate weaving courses; oth- ers trailed behind Mr. Forbes with supplies as he moved class- es from the vocational art room to B-15. Through the year, various teachers helped with school events, including the senior play, and es- pecially the Prom. In art, the stu- dent created — with paint, clay, paper, wood, and frequently, in- spiration. The Music Department means chorus courses, hours of rehearsals, and notes for the teacher; it is a football landing in a sousaphone at a football game; but most of all, it is Mr. Joseph Oneschuk. His talented musicians are heard at football games and athletic rallies, the Christmas assembly, music festival, senior play, Memorial Day Parade, National Honor Society Induction, awards assemblies, and graduation. In the music theory courses, fundamentals and techniques of music history and composition are taught. The classes must prepare a complete band score, played and conducted by the students. This course has also resulted in the composition of an original school alma mater and 1967 Class Song. The music appreciation classes are experimenting with a related arts approach in which music is integrated with the develop- ment of history, literature, and art. In the department marks may be scaled to retain harmony between student and teachers. 2- S7ncfus riaf CTlrfs Mr. Krikorian Mr. Champlin Mr. Edmond 1 The Industrial Arts De- partment offers a multi- faceted program which en- ables students to gain ex- perience in the areas of mechanical drawing, wood- work, metalworlt, the graphic arts, electricity, technical drawing, and data process- ing. Here students learn the techniques of building, pho- tography, magnetism, com- munications, and electricity, later to be used in their work or hobbies. Computer programming and solid state electronics are grow- ing fields the department explores: calculations at in- credible speed and devices streamlined of vacuum tubes. Using techniques learned, students construct boats and assemble a working televi- sion. Moderp (industrial) art. Mr. Farrell Mr. Krencisz 1 TJocaiionaf Mrs. Helen Johnson Secretary The roar of gines, the hum the en- of ma- chines. This, and more, is Vocational. Designed for students planning to enter a trade directly after graduation, the school has grown under the direction of Mr. Joseph Keefe. Students alternate one week in shop and one week in class, specializing either in automotive shop, elec- tronics, or machines. Future mechanics dissect live cars, literally get- ting inside the subject. Electronic shop covers the commercial devices, like television sets, and more complex computer and sonar mechanisms. Machinists learn the tools and methods of working materials for useful ends, as well as how to control a temper (metallic). In short, Vocational has the most grinding curriculum at South. Mr. Keefe, Director Mr. DeCollibus Mr. Fraser Mr. Molloy -9 Mr. Thompson Mr. Terranova Mr. Rogers Mr. Peterson 2t r i J Jiysicaf Cjcfucaiion Mr. Janes, Director Mr. Strong Mrs. Walker Mrs. West Robin Hood and his merry maids. Stressing a well-balanced program, the South High School Physical Education De- partment is interested in the development of both team competition and individual contributions by students dur- ing class periods. Although difficulty is occa- sionally experienced in keep- ing shut the doors separating the boys ' and girls ' gym classes, the physical fitness program presents successfully a variety of activities, includ- ing touch football, basket- ball, volleyball, soccer (and crab soccer) gymnastics and archery. Conclusion: gym is a fit course for every curriculum. I, 2, 3, 4, ... 5? Mr. Woodcomb Stop the world! I want to get off! 30 driver CjJucation In only one department is it possible to drive a car up a guy wire, or try to put oil in a radiator: driver education. Instructors Mr. Gregory Hebard, Mr. Thomas Fraser, and Mr. John Novak do not plan such abnormal occurrences, but in the course of classwork and on-the-road instruction, accidents will happen. The regular class curriculum covers automobile function, maintenance, and safety; Mass- achusetts highway law; various types of driving (winter, night, highway); and driver attitude. Stu- dents may analyze the cause of a particular ac- cident and ways to avoid it. On the road, students first learn basic maneuvers, then plunge into traffic, and finally accelerate to over thirty miles per hour. In the winter, drivers skid in the parking lot to develop control. The department is one of the state ' s finest; taking care of over 250 students each year. Two cars, donated by local dealers, to- gether travel over 20,000 miles a year for education. Driver education is the one class where a student cannot be run down by the homework. Mr. Fraser Mr. Hebard Mr. Novak 31 Guidance Mr. Frabotta, Department Head I Miss Connors Mr. Lopes Mr. Porter Miss Queenan Four years of college, a Master ' s Degree, two years ' teaching. All this to become a counselor, and just talk to people? But the Guidance Depart- ment, directed by Mr. Bernard T. White, with Mr. John Frabotta in charge at South, is more than this. Each of the six counselors is assigned about 300 students on an alphabetical basis: pro- grams are arranged, and conflicts that might confuse the computer resolved by hand. There are recommendations and transcripts for over half the sen- iors: over the years perhaps 500 uni- versities have accepted South students. And five times a year innumerable Col- lege Board scores must be distributed. Dissemination of scholarship information and job placement are other concerns. Counselors make recommendations to students on the basis of available infor- mation, their methods including parent and teacher consultation, referrals, and most important, interviews with students. The fact that Mr. Porter, with the de- partment ' s oldest car, handles Voca- tional ' s automotive students has abso lute- ly no influence on his decisions. What- ever the case, as forms grow longer, and days shorter, guidance continues to point students in the right direction. Cftmerican ie cf Service CProj roaram Haluk Ozemek and his American brother, Ellis Bryant. Haluk ' s family: Sister Hale, Mr. and Mrs. Cemal Ozemek, Haluk. First of all, I would like to thank the Philomath editors who were so nice to give me this op- portunity to explain my experiences in the United States. This year was very special and interesting for me. It was the first time that I tried to live such a long period of time in a very different country. Before I came, I thought it would be very difficult, but it wasn ' t, because the people here, especially my American parents, were very help- ful and friendly to me. For the first couple of weeks at Framingham South High School, I was very confused, because it was quite different from my own high school in Turkey, especially the traveling between classrooms. Sports were a little bit different, too. For example, I never saw football before I came to the United States. After my friends explained to me how to play, I really liked it. During the soccer season I enjoyed playing that sport very much, because it was my national sport. There is one thing left that I would like to tell you about the American Field Service. It is really a great organization. I always think that if it were not for AFS, I never would have found the opportunity to learn the American way of life and meet so many good friends. I thank all of you for your part in this. 3  •« - t - ...v. BASMANf ■fix.. 9Zi Te GfuS Ready. . .Aim. . .
