WHITE Director of Guidance 6 PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE It seems only yesterday, yet it was some four years ago. that the members of the Class of 1961 began their high school careers as students in Grade 9. If you observe carefully the present ninth-grade students and then con- sider your classmates, I am sure that you will be aware of the tremendous number of changes that take place in every young person during this four-year period of his life. The students of Framingham High School come to us, remain for a short time, and then move on to institutions of higher learning or to the world of work. As you are about to leave us, the Class of 1961 may point with satis- faction to its fine accomplishments in academic achieve- ment and in extracurricular activities. Each individual should be aware of his own development to the extent of his enthusiasm, ability, and degree of par- ticipation in school affairs. We urge you to plan ahead and ' realize that what you do today will improve your chances for success in future years. The administrators, teachers, counselors, and all other members of the staff at Framingham High School sincerely hope that they have contributed something desirable and worthwhile toward the physical and mental health, char- acter, habits and knowledge of each member of the Class of 1961. Our work with you has been a pleasure. Live in the future in a manner to bring credit to yourself, your parents, the school and the community. My best wishes go with you in your future endeavors. 8 As members of the Class of 1961, we have just com- pleted four very important years. Since we are the first class to have entered this Framingham High School as freshmen, we are justly proud to have completed our high school courses here. During these four years, the high school has undergone a number of changes. As freshmen, we were introduced to rotating schedule; as seniors, we became involved in the overlap program. The latter meant inconveniences as far as scheduling extracurricular activities, for meetings had to be held at the close of the early sessions, and, at times, this eliminated freshmen from the gatherings. However, we made the most of a bad situation and tried to carry on in a creditable manner. Two new administrators, a larger guidance department, and many new faculty members helped us to appreciate the fact that the high school had grown, and with its development came greater responsibilities. In reflection, we find that time has gone by and today we are on the threshold of a new phase of living. Next year will find most of us either working or attending schools for self-improvement. Whatever we may be plan- ning, we will always use our high school training and experiences as the bases of future success. As the school has contributed much to our development, so members of the class have done much for the school by winning awards .in academic areas, as well as in athletic endeavors. These many honors will be left behind and will serve to inspire those who follow in our footsteps. Since we have been encouraged to set high standards, let us continue to pace ourselves in accordance with our many God-given talents. Each trained and expe- rienced counselor not only aids students in course selection and college application but also helps to plan for such programs as the Occupational Con- ferences for juniors. F.H.S. pupils are fortunate indeed to have the services of such a fine department. Here are those scores you ' ve hcen asking for This college seems 66 67 Our English Department, under the direction of Miss Priscilla March, continues to encourage wider reading, bet- ter speaking, clearer writing, and keener listening. Pass the paper quickly, please. 69 Tape recorder practice is necessary for conversatiorial skills. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Three foreign languages are offered to students at Framingham High. Miss Mary Cunningham super- vises the teaching of Latin, French, and Spanish. In the course of language study, pupils are taught not only the mechanics of the language but also the his- tory, the manners, and the customs of the peoples concerned. Classroom conversation makes for lively classes. Mis9 Vancavage, Miss Bonville, Mr. Lyons, and Miss Gucciardi meet in the book supply room. Miss Bonville asks for a recitation. 70 71 SOCIAL STUDIES From ancient Babylonia to some of the problems of the early-Kennedy administration . . . this is the wide range of topics covered in the social studies program under the super- vision of Mr. Fred Bayes, chairman of this de- partment. Debates, discussions, polls, maps, and charts help to make civics, economics, so- ciology, and all the other phases of history more realistic for Framingham pupils. Mr. Boothroyd, Mr. Charles, Mr. Kelley, Mr. McGillivray, and Mr. Jolie discuss the election. South American geography is studied by Mr. Dowling, Miss Riley, Mr. Daniels, Miss Janda, Mr. O ' Brien, and Mr. Ram. CuO + H 2 HX + Cu SCIENCE The Science Department, under the direction of Mr. John Meegan, has acquired more equipment and addi- tional teachers this year to make the scientific section of the total educa- tional program better than ever. Mole- cular models for chemistry and an artificial man for biology have en- riched the curriculum, which ranges from general science to advanced bi- ology, chemistry, and physics. The championship television victory of the F.H.S. Science Quiz Team was a fine tribute to the excellence of the Science Department. Mr. Tisdel], Biology; Mr. Gaucher, Gen- eral Science; Miss Robinson, Biology; Mr. Louder, Chemistry; Mr. Ciccolo, Physics. I MATHEMATICS I Math Club works on satellite tracking. r T The Mathematics Department ac- quired a new director this year in the person of Mr. Donald St. An- dre. In addition, much new equip- ment was purchased with funds from a National Science Founda- tion grant. The department offers a wide variety of math courses for commercial, general, and college- bound students. The newly accel- erated program permits certain qualifying students to begin alge- bra in the eighth grade and to com- plete the college-prep math se- quence a year early. Mr. Galvani, Mr. Vodoklys, Mrs. Quig- ley, Mr. Antell, Mr. Minnichelli, and Mr. Hebard check new equipment. This is how they used to do it. 77 This problem needs correcting. Miss Marion Kubacki and Mr. Neal Cotton in the Art Department have promoted a greater interest in social activities by means of posters, banners, and deco- rations around the school. School spirit has been on the rise, especially since these teachers have been giving advanced instructions in art and related fields to those who are especially talented in these areas. Mr. Feindel, Mr. Farrell, Mr. Koroski, Mr. Edmunds, Mr. McKnight, Mr. Alves, and Mr. Krikorian. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Any student may elect an industrial arts course so that he may learn some of the skills and methods of industry. In addition, courses in this department help students to appreciate the practical applications of theories learned in academic classes. The highly trained in- dustrial arts faculty is always prepared to teach the techniques which form the basis of the nation ' s economy. The very modern facilities give the students an opportunity to increase their skills in stenography, typing, and machines. For those who wish to learn typing, a personal typing course, meeting twice a week, is offered. What happened here? Business Department teachers include Mr. Hatch, Mrs. Peckham, Mr. Murphy, Miss Stanton, Miss Kirby, Miss MacDonald, and Miss Delaney. Miss Ki lass takes dictation. 80 81 The Music Department, though limited in its number of faculty members, caters to the interests of hundreds of girls and boys. The Glee Clubs appeal to those who like to sing: A Cappella is for those vocally talented. Orchestra and Band interest pupils who have had instrumental training. mm Bring those knees up high ! Well, I could climb it in an emergency. Was this the way I was supposed to do it? PHYSICAL EDUCATION Each student is required to participate in the physical education program during his years in the high school. Both indoors and outdoors, the individual learns the value of teamwork, fair play, and personal physical fitness. Every year those interested in gymnastics present a gym show, always a highlight of the springtime calendar. Once over lightly. 84 That Ivory look. Mrs. Eldridge, Miss Wiggins, and Mrs. Markee. HOME ECONOMICS Oh, those delicious aromas from the Home Eco- nomics Department! With the help of Mrs. Kreger, the girls have made specialties from countries all over the world. Aside from the usual backstage butterflies, falling props, and misplaced wigs, the play was a grand success. Nearly half the class was involved in the many intricate phases of producing a play — make-up, set-design, prompting, lighting, costuming, ushering, selling tickets — everyone was busy doing something. Miss Kline and her crew certainly deserve thanks for an excellent production. The cast hears final instructions from Miss Kline. VICTORY ' We could have danced all night. ill , F 1 1 ' Don ' t drop it, girls! The Victory Dance, in honor of our Thanks- giving Day win, was held Friday, December 2, 1960, in the Framingham High School gymnasium. The dancing, the entertainment and finally the excitement of choosing the co-captains for next year ' s football season made the evening an enjoy- able one for all present. Four at a table? ! During the summer of 1960, I was fortunate enough to be the American Field Service foreign exchange student from Framingham High School. The American Field Service program is designed to increase understanding and friendship among the peoples of the world. As a participant in this pro.- gram, I lived for two months with a Swiss family in Zurich, Switzerland. This experience has taught me to recognize and to respect the similarities and dif- ferences of people who, though they live in different countries, seek a peaceful and useful life. I hope that the Swiss people whom I had the pleasure of meeting may now have a better under- standing and perhaps a better impression of Amer- icans, because of our associations. My experiences last summer have broadened my horizons, and I would like to thank all of the Framingham High School students who helped to make my visit possible. JAMES KELLY E X c H A N G I cannot help thinking that it was just yesterday that I came to this school as a senior, full of expec- tation and a little bit of fear. But the year has passed, leaving me a lot of precious memories. Although I was confused at first, everyone in this school was very nice and always helpful to me so that I could get used to the school. I will always remember the pleasant experiences of running from class to class, climbing up a rope in the gym, and cheering at football games. I will always be proud of my having been a student of F.H.S. for a year. I would like to thank you for being so nice to me and giving me such valuable experiences. I wish prosperity and progress to F.H.S. and hope that our paths will cross sometime again. MASAKO OKAMI ' ft M CHRISTMAS PROJECTS The Save The Children Federation received hundreds of pounds of clothing. Sizeable contributions were made to worthy charities. Richard Glew, General Chairman, and Mr. Bayes, Advisor, discuss the successful Christmas Projects. The varieties of canned foods for the Salvation Army seemed almost endless. 109 £1 Last-minute check up SCIENCE FAIR The Science Fair is the major extracurricular activity sponsored by the Science Department each year. In the fields of biology, chemistry, and physics, many outstand- ing projects are exhibited by students for judging and for display to the many spectators who visit the fair. Last year five students went on to higher competition at the Worcester Regional Science Fair, and four competed in the State Fair at M.I.T. One F.H.S. winner traveled to the National Science Fair at Indianapolis. The success of all these students i9 another reflection of the excellence of our annual Science Fair and gives some indication of the tremendous interest developed in the Fair throughout the school. Early last fall no- body expected the Flyer squad to be much of a threat. However, under an able coaching staff, the boys quickly began to show the steady defensive game which has become a trademark of Framingham High School teams in recent years. Natick _ Norwood Wellesley Milton The Framingham High hockey team completed one of its most suc- cessful seasons with a record of nine wins, two ties, and three losses. With this record, the squad finished third in the Bay State League standings and qualified for the state hockey tourney. One of the highlights of the season was a 1-0 victory over a pow- erful Norwood sextet that was pre- viously undefeated in ten games. The Flyers also beat Natick twice, coming from behind 3-2 and shutting them out 5-0. After a shaky first round, the team settled down to go unde- feated through eight straight games. Much credit should be given to Coach Henry Cotton, who carried on the unfinished work of Ed Loring in developing the squad into an effec- tive unit.
