TWO BOYS We must not think this is an ordinary day Two boys are dead And in a mangled car Nestled against a milk truck, their faces Stare, unknowing, unmovingg Give mercy. We are crying Through the painted cinder block hallway the girls come crying. They shake their heads in disbelief, they hide their faces - A bad joke, they know that cars Bring freedom, are not for dead - Boys who hear know more this day Their shaking hands, ask mercy. The President quotes Micah - love, justice, and mercy, lt is inauguration Day and the Millions and millions of faces Are watching and smiling, some crying Some moved by promises, some burying hopes that are dead. The President walks down the middle of the wide avenue for this time freed from the huge, bullet-proof car. The snow is glaring white and edged with black near the car They did not live long enough to face Their fear, or make us hear their crying Or wait for us to come today With mercy. The bodies are removed. The boys are dead. Do you think looking at the dead Useless bodies in the hospital, sparated from the wrecked car The mothers' wretched call for mercy From the God who gave the boys that day To them, just a few years ago, Infants crying Boldly and life thirsty, fussy silk heads and tiny puzzled faces Will be heard, will move hearts, will unset stone faces? And some, a few, with mercy Will move to touch inot the dead, too late for that, the boys are gone and the broken carl But touch the crying Hurting ones, this day.
