PROLOGUE You'd better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone, For the times they are a-changing .... The times they are a-changing, the world is changing, and we are a part of it. To be young is beautiful, but frightening too - there's so much to be done, so much to be changed. There is blood and hunger, fear and loneliness, black-white violence and chrome-gleaming, computerized death. Chok- ing destruction hovers over the earth in ominous smog- clouds. But it is 1970, and we have touched the moon. Youth is the medium of change, involvement the mecha- nism. Everywhere we are looking for new answers. Even though we are made into mathematical facts and forced to accept mediocrity, we are still aware of humaness, still sen- sitive to the intangible. Interest in astrology is a symbol of the times, proclaiming the unique significance of the indi- vidual. The stars and the planets weave new patterns for a new decade, and a wave of excitement sweeps through youth. Fate is floating around and contagious. We are both silly and serious, childish and inspired. We can still crowd a dozen kids into some old four-wheeled hulk and race madly down back roads, or twist vocal cords into knots rooting for the Bruins. This a part of being young, a sign of humaness that automation cannot erase. But we have also watched Apollo's launching with taut breathing and viewed Vietnam with grave concern, we have marched with McCarthy in New Hampshire and hiked for the hungry into Boston. Above all, we have a sense of the world's inertia, wildly gyrating events, wobbling institutions. Times are changing, we feel it, we know. W'e will change them for the better.
