Vnt inviting you to spend some ieisute time brow sing through this Phiiontoth. i957 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As our years at Framingham High School draw to a close, I am impressed by two outstanding characteristics of our class, mainly loyalty and cooperation. These have manifested themselves in all the various spheres of school activity. But they have probably been most tangible in the continued and unflinching support which our class has given to the school's athletic program. Whether the scores reflected victory or not, our class has always given its support by participation, at- tendance, and encouragement. In every other activity, be it old and tested, or new and yet untried, the seniors have put their shoulders to the wheel and given their fullest measure of effort towards successful achievement. Living as we do in a community where opportunities for out of school employment and recreation are abundant, I can proudly say that we have never been called upon to join in a project of any merit without our responding with ready en- thusiasm. Long hours of preparation, many personal sacri- fices, and the joint efforts of various groups have resulted in noteworthy services to both the school and the community. To name some would be but to unfairly neglect others, but at the risk of doing so, I cannot help but mention the heart- warming Christmas projects, the brilliant junior Prom, and the day in and day out assistance of our marshals. Since our entrance as sophomores, we have grown in many directions. We have learned from our daily contacts with the faculty something of the superior values, we have acquired an appreciation of the finer idealsg we have captured an under- standing of what life will hold for us. The good counsel afforded us by our principal, Mr. Magoon, and the everwilling assistance and understanding of our class advisor, Miss Kirby, have smoothed our path throughout our years together. To them we are most grateful. That I am both pleased and proud to have been, for the past two years, the president of a class, which has so well exemplified the finest qualities of school citizenship, goes al- most without saying. It would be unfair if I failed to express my sincere thanks to my fellow class officers and to all my classmates who have so willingly and graciously given of their assistance. At last some 290 new students were ready to take their places in Framingham High School and comprise the class of 1957. Up to this time we had been slips of paper on file in the office, but now we were ready to establish ourselves and see to it that the class of '57 would be remembered forever. How did our first few days go? We quickly grew accustomed to the P. A. sys- tem, marshals leaving classes early and rotating periods. But who will forget the troubles we had at lunch periods when the upperclassmen used us as doormats in order to sneak ahead in line, and how many were sent to the boiler room after asking directions to the gym or biology lab? Then with the Senior-Soph, we were able to get into the social life of the school. During the early weeks, members from our class had shown their ability in ath- letics. So the future looked bright on the gridiron. It seemed as if we had just settled into the daily life of F. H. S., when we had our first combat with term exams. Then, soon after Christmas vacation we were able to place some of our classmates on the Student Council, while others began their services with the Student Crier. Several of us showed our talents at the Science Fair and later we helped make the Music Festival a big success. After a week of vigorous campaigning, our first year hit its climax on election day. Mark Dooling was elected president of our junior class with Jimmy Duca chosen as vice president, Sue Pepi served as secretary, and Judy Austin was elected treasurer. School seemed tiring after such a hectic time, but ten weeks of vacation took care of our boredom. As juniors, we were in the middle-that is, we could impress the new sophomores but the seniors continued to play the part of the big boss and to take credit for every- thing they could think of. Yet, many of our classmates continued to shine athletically and scholastically. Others showed that they could organize projects efficiently, while our entire class proved that we could work together and carry a job to completion. The biggest and most success- ful event of the year was our Junior Prom. The Mardi Gras was a night never to be forgotten. The days passed quickly, and soon we had to prepare for our senior year. Mark Dooling and Jimmy Duca were reelected as president and vice president of our class. Margie Keaney was chosen treasurer and Alice Purcell sec- retary. Donald Prince was elected president of the Student Councilg Mike Otenti became head of the Marshal Force, Jana Levine and Paul Wassarman were chosen editors of the Student Crierg Sharon Whittier and Tom Braithwaite took on the responsibilities of the Pbilomnth. Carol Gar- barino was selected to lead the majorettes, and Joanne Urban prepared to captain the cheerleaders. Finally, after ten weeks of fun and relaxation mixed with a little work, we returned to the halls of F. H. S. as sen- iors. Yes, we were finally seniors, facing our new responsi- bilities fearlessly and proud to be looked up to for leader- ship. The Senior-Soph paved the way for our many accom- plishments during this, our final year. Our football team was one of the finest that Framingham could remember. The thrills, the joys, and the sorrows will live with us forever, and our team will be a topic of conversation in the years to come. To show that others thought as much of our team as we did, Dick Natoli, Joe Zichella, and Joe Holtslag were chosen on post-season All-Star squads. The senior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, was a huge success and gave many of us a chance to prove our talent for acting. Enthusiasm, extended through the candy sale, was renewed in the Christmas Projects under our direction. These smashed all records as we willingly helped hundreds enjoy a happier holiday. January saw our basketball team beginning to roll, while March found the Flyers in post-season competition for the third straight year. Our hockey team, sparked by Pete McCann and Dave Anghinetti, not only proved to be one of the best in the league, but also gave Flyer fans new hope in this great winter sport. Bob Burnand led a rising Flyer track teamg Steve Ryder sparked a fine baseball squadg Pete Hatfield and Les Bond guided our golf team. The girls gave more promise of success in sports this year and the cheerleaders and majorettes deserve credit for honors won. Meanwhile, we were all going through the turmoils of Community Life lectures, College Boards, and applications. Several of our number received high recognition for their scholastic achievements. Spring was upon us and soon we were swapping pic- tures, making definite plans for the future, all the while realizing that time was growing short. Our unforgettable Class Night came too quickly after the Student Council Dance. The last few days passed quickly, and before we knew it, the great day had almost arrived. In three short years we had formed lasting friendships. Now we are looking ahead to what the future holds, for it is June, 1957, and graduation day is just around the corner. C STUDENT Under the able leadership of Donald Prince, the Student Council completed many successful projects during this school year. The latter part of the summer was devoted to the publishing of the Sophomore Handbook by Dick Natoli and his committee. School would never be school without books and their required covers. Selling schoolbook covers was another Council undertaking which met with great student response. Shortly after the usual fall candy sale, which necessitates much effort on the parts of students and faculty, Mr. York, the Student Council sponsor, an- nounced his plans to leave F.H.S. At an informal get-together the group pre- sented Mr. York a farewell gift and at the same meeting greeted Mr. Bayes as the new faculty advisor. Under his leadership the Football Dance to honor a very deserving team was held and proved to be one of the best attended in the school's history. With the Christmas season just around the proverbial corner, most students gladly donated can goods and clothing for the needy of the town and elsewhere. The tremendous success of the drive was indeed a measure of teen-age generos- ity and cooperation. And so, the year 1957, the year of our graduation, arrived and all awaited more plans and further decisions by the Student Council. The Spring Dance, another of the many projects materialized into a reality that certainly spelled success. FOOTBALL DANCE A most successful football season was climaxed by the second dance of the year, the Football Dance. Angelo Urbani's Band provided the excellent music which was enjoyed by those in attendance. During the intermission the floor was cleared so that the cheer- leaders and the maiorettes might enter- tain the group with their singing. Honestly both were terrific! Everyone grew tense when the time came for the naming of next year's co- captains, who proved to be Pete Sul- livan and Blake Dawson, During the announcement a large paper football that was suspended from the ceiling was mysteriously opened and showered the co-captains with its contents, con- fetti and balloons. The crowning of the Queen, Mary Paduia, and her two princesses, Caroie Garharino and Mary Ann Weddieton, brought 11 perfect evening to a dose. PROM 94 -l' 9' E i I i I The Music Department under the direction of Mr. Murray and Miss Conway has a very busy schedule. The Band is an essential contributor to the school assemblies. It is featured at all the football games, local as well as out of town clashes. On two different occasions music has been provided for General Motors. The Orchestra is responsible for the music rendered at the annual Senior Play. Its members also take part in the Music Festival. Christmas activities include a special Brass Choir and the selected A Cappella Choir of approximately forty-five voices. Programs are prepared for the high school, the Framingham Union Hospital, the different women's clubs, and for the last three years the local Kiwanis Club. xii 'X . wx -k' The All-State Concert takes place in the early spring. Worthy music students are selected to participate in the All-State Chorus, the All-State Band, and the All-State Or- chestra. The annual Music Festival is generally held in May. The participating groups include the combined Girls' Glee Clubs, the Boys' Glee Clubs, the Band, the Orchestra and the A Cappella Choir, as well as some carefully trained soloists. The teamwork proved too much for Milton as Murphy, Sullivan, Levy, Nate and Richards scored the touchdowns. The game against Needham was certainly a team triumph as Natoli scored the 'first T.D. late in the first half to tie the game 6-6. Zichella scored from the 13-yard line in the third quarter and Lynch kicked the extra point. Needham hit paydirt in the fourth quarter, but co-captain Don Prince stopped the try for the extra point as the Flyers .emerged victoriously 13- 12. This game was bitterly fouht and the results of EQ ' lv x The Coach and the Co-Captains. the grueling contest were evident as the boys dropped their next two games, one to Wellesley 20-15, and the other to Braintree 13-7 before the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Natick. The 1956-57 Framingham High School hockey team enjoyed a very interesting season by winning four games, losing four, and evening two with a tie. Although the team finished a respectable fourth, the boys gave evidence of playing champion- ship hockey on any given night, and as proof, the Flyers held victories over Needham, Watertown, Waltham, and Wellesley. In gym classes, under the direc- tion of Miss Verna Moberg, the girls are shown the skills necessary for competence in soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis.
