Even with all the ridicule cast in their direction, the sophomores considered themselves a fortunate group, for they were to be the first class to have full use of the sparkling new gymnasium and cafeteria. Finally, however, the haughty seniors gave in and extended to the sophomores their official greetings in the form of a Senior-Soph dance. Eventually they even .condescended to allow the class of '53 to show their worth by electing representatives to Student Council and submitting tryouts to the famous Student Crier. By spring they felt that they were a fully accepted part of the high school society and many decided to enter politics. Political fever ran high after the primary elections were com- pleted and the chosen candidates earnestly started campaigning for class offices. When all the barn-storming and whistle-stopping was over and the political smoke cleared, Don Casciolini emerged as the new junior class president and Eddie DeGregory, Marshall Levine, and Virginia Belli had ascended to the offices of vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, respectively. After the prom” and the usual whirl of pre-graduation activities, that long-awaited relief came — vacation. By this time the military draft had reared its ugly head and the entire nation was concerned about the bitter, year-old Korean police-action.” Many young men well-known to the class of '53 were now in uniform, and some were in Japan and Korea. The full import of the casualties of men and equipment was being realized. Most important to the class of ’53, however, was the imminence of Universal Military Training. Debates were carried on across the country in an attempt to uncover the virtues and flaws in the U. M. T. proposal. With two summers filled with war news and talk of military mobilization behind them, the class returned to their studies in September of 1951, perhaps a little more sober than had been their predecessors. They were uncertain about their futures and grappled for security where they could find it. Soon, however, athletics, social activities, and all kinds of committee work drew most of their attention and the new juniors settled back to the old but slightly more active routine of school. The school had just undertaken a new athletic system with full-time coaches showing the boys how”. The girls all seemed to take a new interest in football when Coach Morris, with his assistants, Messrs. Jackowitz, Summers, and Trychon, took over the coaching assign- ments. The gridsters went through a winless season, but they had found new spirit and played good ball all season. The other teams fared better and were also showing signs of better spirit. 39 CLASS HISTORY continued The year passed quickly, and the juniors flitted busily about the first-floor corridors and did all they could to bother the librarian with their new-found duties and authority. Before they knew what had happened to 1951, the class found '52 growing old and plans for the gala prom’’ got underway. When all was said and done, they all relaxed to the tune of Star Dust’’ at a very successful junior prom. With the advance of spring, the outdoor thermometer rose, as did the political ther- mometer at F. H. S. The Candidates, with their previous year’s experience, burned the political candle at both ends in vigorous campaigns. When the flames died out after all the ballots were cast, Marshall Levine found himself leading the class into its final year with the able assistance of Dick Chesmore as his veep,” Marlene Biladeau hanging on to the strings of the moneybags, and Virginia Belli doing the paper work. The Student Council found itself with Ed Farley as its president, and the Student Crier was to be steered by Donna Dabareiner and Tim Sanders, while Jane Callahan and Fred Asnes were to take over the controls on the Philomath. The sheriff duties were being taken over by Len Colp as captain of the Marshal force. Finally the mighty seniors were graduated and the proud class of '53 took over the position of seniority for the few days remaining before vacation. As soon as the doors of old F. H. S. were re-opened in September, the famous Flyers were feeling their oats at practice sessions at Bowditch Field. The gridsters built up an enviable record of six wins against three losses for the season. The spirit throughout the school ran high and the squad reflected their enthusiasm. Before the seniors could be sure they were really upper-classmen, Christmas had passed and the senior play was on its way. With an all-star cast, Meet Me in St. Louis” broke attendance records at Dennison Hall and provided an appreciative audience with delightful comedy. Everyone extended a vote of congratulations and appreciation to Miss Estabrook, who suffered the headaches of the director during the play’s production, and Miss Apperson, the class advisor. As the class looks forward to the Junior Prom, Class Night, the Music Festival, and finally Graduation, it realizes that these last high school activities will soon become a part of its memory. One phase of life is now ending for the class of ’53 and another is opening its doors. As we go out into the world to seek for ourselves a place in history, we, the CLASS of 1953 shall strive to further enlighten ourselves and our contemporaries in worldly knowledge and to add our experiences to those of our predecessors in order that this may be a more com- fortable and peaceful world in which to live. by Timothy Sanders, Class Historian CLASS WILL Being of sound mind we, the class of 1953, wishing to continue our glorious tradition have hereto inscribed a document to serve to that end. The mark that we have made upon the history of Framingham High School will be unblemished by years, though we will have long since departed from our alma mater. We will not fade from the memories of our teachers, and the friendly corridors will remember us, although new footsteps will echo in the halls. Our class will leave this building to seek new horizons, but we will not let the future blind us, and when climbing fortune’s ladders, we will gaze back at our days at Framingham High. We will never forget you, F. H. S. — never!! Now to the business at hand. It is only suitable and just that we leave as tokens of our appreciation bequests to show our esteem for our high school, our instructors, and all connected with making our stay at this establishment a worthy one. We Seniors with sincerity in this task leave the following items to specified individuals and to our own posterity: 1. To Mr. Bush, we leave a Book of Jokes for Every Occasion” in the hope that he will use it when he cracks his noted smile to inspire his ever happy classes. Mr. Brooks, we bequeath to you a hot rod equipped with an exhaust manifold, on the condition that on every April 15th you will compete in a drag race” with daring Mr. Charles over a three-mile course, the winner receiving a sweater knitted by Miss Benton. We will to Miss Garrahan a dozen white biological mice so that the patter of little feet may be continually heard around her home. 4. The class of ’53 donates to Mr. Meegan, our scientific chemistry teacher, a canary-colored overcoat to match his chalk-covered suits. 5. Miss March is to receive thirty gallons of provincial tea left over from the Boston Tea Party to be given as a stimulant to her pupils during class recitations of poetry. 6. To Mr. Novak we give a new Driver's Ed. Car especially equipped with rubber bumpers, on the condition that Miss Squires will be his first pupil. 7. To Miss Estabrook we impart our heart-felt appreciation, plus the teeth- marks on Len Whitman's leg, along with a derailed trolley, to remind her of our spectacular play — Meet Me in St. Louis.” 8. We leave to Miss Apperson, our patient, friendly class adviser, a golden bust of Marshall Levine to immortalize their combined spirit on the behalf of the class of ’53. We now turn from the business at hand to the individual gifts from the characters” of our beloved class. 41 9. Captain Hakansson and the hockey team leave the School Committee and their faithful bus driver, Charlie Crawford, practical lessons in the art of self defense. 10. 11. Dick Pleshaw and John Halliday request that Floyd Bancroft be given their secrets on how to capture a maiden's heart with a melting smile. Barbi Driscoll bequeaths to next year's Senior Play brat” her ability to enliven a performance with the unexpected. 12. Tom Fitzgerald leaves his ability to dissolve his Modern Problems with the old problem, sleep, to any sleep-starved Junior. 13. We, the Senior cheerleaders, leave our flying skirts, assorted legs, and original cheers to next year's Framingham boosters. 14. We, Len Whitman, Dino Gentili, and Bob Williams leave our chauffeurs’ union cards to any Junior boy who wishes to be a knight in shining armor to damsels in distress. 15. Neil Armstrong leaves his height to Nicky Coco, so that Nick will really stretch a tall tale. 16. The Vocational Seniors recommend to the Student Council a bill to change the Vocational School to a co-educational institution. 17. To the school we leave blueprints for an underground swimming pool and hockey rink for the private use of the next year’s hard studying” Senior Class. 18. We, the Senior girls, leave a showcase of sparkling rings gained from our bewitched admirers to any group of courageous Juniors who will carry on this domestic custom. 19- We, the class of 53, after having suffered through a year of Community Life” just leave the community. To attest to the legality of the preceding document we undersign our names: Fred Asnes Barbara Driscoll Witnesses: Marilyn Hanlon Virginia Hinckley Arthur Del Prete Arnold Johnson 42 WITCH I: WITCH II: WITCH III: BUGLER: WITCH I: WITCH II: WITCH I: WITCH III WITCH I: :lr (with apologies to William Shakespeare and other poets.) Three hag-like creatures are found bent over a smoking kettle. When shall we three meet again — In thunder,.lightning or in rain? When the hurly-burly's done — But hark, a visitor doth come! The Bugler of Rockingham! Ho-ho, and are you in some jam? My curiosity leads me here. I have come to lend an ear while you tell me what's to come For my classmates every one. What do you see for '53? I look at the billboard and am filled with surprise When a hundred familiar names greet my eyes. The first is a magician of world-wide fame. To those who know him. Leon Roberge, his name. His charming assistant of equal renown Is Gladys McGaughey in a green silk gown. Now here is a trick that requires some skill; I'm speaking of Guy Sebastiano's conquering the will. With the help of Alma Grandoni his able assistant. He's a rival of all other shows in the tent. Hark! The consequences certainly would be dire If you failed to see Kenny Colonna eating fire. To the big top! To the big top I. pray — To see feats of bravery, daring, and — say — Isn't that Dolly Leao on the high trapeze, Flying through the air with the greatest of ease? Don Casciolini keeps Bowditch Field in condition While Bob Leland cheers on Jay-Vees as his mission. Gene Nardini, since his youth a ski enthusiast. Has succeeded in skiing all the way down Mt. Everest. Rope climbing is a profession requiring great skill: Marlene Brandolini has this talent, admit it I will. WITCH I: Alack, have we still not fulfilled our task? You wretched human, is there more you ask? The witches never fail Come snow, rain, or hail. If there is more to do We must further stir this brew. BUGLER: Once again you have rightly guessed; My classmates must further be addressed. There still are some people and some names That you have not put with fortunes or fames. Still more of the future you must speak Unless you want to lose that ugly beak! I await. WITCH II: We’d better be careful when going a-hunting Because Game Warden John Park is always a-gunning. And the fellow with the worst of the jobs to date . Is Christopher Cleaves who makes basketballs inflate. Bob Downey perfected his eye while in high school And now his game is professional pool. Tom Fitzgerald manages the Country Club's lots Spending most of his time replacing the divots. Turning to baseball we find Anne Dupuis in Fenway Park First woman breaking a bat on a homer. What a lark! Jim Hanscom is making his fists pay off well; He just won the lightweight boxing crown — couldn't you tell? Dottie Delage has established new fame. First woman to swim Beaver Brook is her claim. Dino Gentili has always liked hunting — Now' he skins those woodchucks and makes rich baby buntings. Mike Kinnarney is great at riding solo And is now American champion at polo. 47 CLASS PROPHECY continued BUGLER: (throws back his bugler’s costume revealing himself at Hecate, a creature more hideous and even more powerful than the three witches) You could have spoke forever. • There would have been a time for such a speech. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow Creep on these mightv grads' ’ from day to day To the last syllable of atomic time. And all their deeds Have filled the hall of fame. Out. Out. diploma! Life's but a song and dance. A tune sung on a trolley That fades at the end of the line. It is a play acted by all — signifying much. But now. I have more for all to hear. Come, brute creations, lend an ear to me. With the honking of horns and the screeching of brakes Al Jones comes driving into Dick Jewell's hot rod place. Up goes the hood and out run the mechanics — whizz, whee — Lin Faulkner. Paul Heffron and. who’s this, — Barbara Ablondi. All through the commotion one man does his task — Paul Miles is washing Al's windshield glass. Into the yard pulls a truck marked, Bronx Zoo. With John Gustin driving a kangaroo or two. A familiar face now appears to alL Marge Williams, better known as The Insurance Doll. Over in the corner is Dave Whiting hard at work He's building the world's fastest hot-rod. I've heard. Marlene Biladeau and Jackie Houghton with tears in their eyes Are looking at their hot rods smashed up on the side. Says Marlene to Jack, If that tree weren't in the way I know. replies Jack, that hydrant wasn’t there, yesterday. To this sad affair comes a twinkle of light; President Wales of the U. S. Safe Drivers Club is in sight. His words of wisdom, when that light is red. Drive fast, hold tight, and — oh yes — duck your head. Cecelia Colon has a hard job we’re told — She walks around testing neolite soles. Catherine Cassidy has a job requiring much brain — She tests rubber balls in the sun and the rain. Now sve see the Lab's huge swimming pool And spy tw’o faces that you've seen in school. Will Roberge and Dick Schiavi. both soaking wet; Will tests underwater pens and Dick waterproof watches — yet. To the next room we go. for a sweet tooth we possess — Louis Montesi's famous candy tester is still in a mess. The texture of coffee is important they say — Frances Aquino samples coffee all day. Have you ever wondered how perfume gets its smell? Just ask Jean MacCormick, perfume smeller, she’ll tell. Every community needs shovel inspection And William Barbaradora does this to perfection. But now, a few models I sec. Who's this? Theresa Santini ? Yes, and dressed in a 1904 bathing suit And long black stockings she’s wearing, to boot. Robert Williams poses for the Halo shampoo ad. Marilyn Keefe can never be sad — She's an Ipana ad girl And she even knows great Uncle Milton Bcrle. Having kept his talent in the shade John Halliday is learning Mr. Martin's trade. Fred Fletcher who designed the cowboy boot. Is now in business with Bob Gamari selling fruit. Ed Gallivan, trying to regain his losses. Is now working in the stables currying horses. WITCH I: Ay, humans, all this is so. but why Dost thou sit so amazedly by? Come, creatures, make their spirits bright And show the best of our delights. WITCH IV: I ll charm the air to give a sound. Then w'e'll perform an antic round. That these great classmates may someday say Our prophecy did their welcome pay.
