Mm k Kgvxu X X Louis Oakes The class of 1965 dedicates this yearbook to the memory of a man to Whom we owe much, Mr. Louis Oakes. 4 L O U I S O A K E S Alumnus- --Benefactor With the death of Louis Oakes in Greenville on November 5, 1964, Foxcroft Acad- emy lost its greatest single benefactor. His death, however, did not mark the ter- mination of his interest in or benefactions to the school, for as long as the institution exists it will have reason to remember and to be grateful to him. Louis Oakes was born in Sangerville February 15, 1871, the oldest child of Wil- liam Pitt and Edith N. Clgewisj Oakes. Whenthe time for his secondary education ar- rived his father piu'chas d a farm inwhat was thenthe Town of Foxcroft and which is now the site of Foxcroft Academy. After graduating from Foxcroft Mr. Oakes attended the University of Maine and later engaged in the management of timberlands in the Moosehead Lake area, developing a respect and love for growingtrees and their proper culture which he maintained during his entire life. As a result of association with the gold mining enterprise of his brother, who later became Sir Harry Oakes, Mr. Oakes acquired the wealth which he so generously used for the benefit of education in Greenville, at the University of Maine, and parti- cularly at Foxcroft Academy. His first benefaction to Foxcroft was the gift to the Trustees in 1941 of his homestead and the subsequent construction of Oakes Field, one of the finest football and track areas in the state. Following World War II he began work on the academic building which was first used in February of 1952. His will pro- vided for a trust fund of approximately 3185,000 with the likelihood in years to come of a further fund. To Mr. Oakes Foxcroft Academy was not just a pile of brick and stone, nor was it simply a place where boys and girls could acquire aformal education. He fully be- lieved in Juvenal's mens sana in corpore sano --a sound mind ina sound body. Dur- ing most of his more than 90 years his vigor attested to the fact that he had lived up to that rule. Foxcroft Academy was to him something which would prepare young people for living, physically as well as mentally. He was most interested inthe pro- ject culminating in the construction of the gymnasium and attended its opening at the age of 91 years. Louis Oakes will no longer be able to sit on the knoll above Oakes Field on a fall afternoon and watch Foxcroft Academy teams play the football he loved so much and which he played himself as a member of the first team to represent the school. But the building which he made possible, and his continuing benefactions will, like the oak trees bordering the campus, keep his memory forever green. Ora L. Evans 5 REVIEW STAFF SEATED: C. Joe Anderson was elected president by the student body and Ken Hews, the vice-president. The first project of the 1964-1965 Student Council was to revise the Constitution. This year for the first time the council had a separate treasury, and to supplement this, the representatives sold graduation date pins. The Student Council, as in past years, monitored the lunch lines. Student Council presented 5 programmed assemblies. Thirteen members attended the two -day Student Council Convention in Calais and St. Stephen. The representatives all learned more about Student Council procedures from other schools. Under the guidance of Miss Chase, Mr. Goss, Mr. Coffin, and Mr. Thomas, the Stu- dent Council endeavored to help and advise the student body. K. Hews Wice-Presidentj, J. Anderson fPresidentJ, W. CLASS HISTORY As the largest class to enter Foxcroft Academy, the class of 1965 bounded in the doors not knowing what to expect. We adjusted quick- ly after the dreaded Freshman Week and chose as our officers: President, Dianne Thomas, Vice- President, Ann Adamovicz, Secretary, Mike Fair, and Treasurer, Mike Dugay. We were represented on the Student Council by Julie Anderson, Nancy King, and Alan Smith. Our class was very well represented in all school activities and organizations, many were recognized for their outstanding ability. We were also very well represented on the Honor Roll. As Sophomores, we returned, determined to fully initiate the incoming Freshmen. We were greatly disappointed when the original Freshman Week was cut to just one day. The class elected Edward Danforth, President, Nancy King, Vice-President, Julie Anderson, Treasurer, and Kandyce Plummer, Secretary. Nancy Snow, Gladys Greene, and Julie Ander- son were our representatives to the Student Council. Again our class had an outstanding representation in various school organizations such as F.F.A., F.H.A., sports, debating, Math Club, chorus, and band. Thirteen students par- ticipated in the All- State Festival. The class of 1965 began another year at Foxcroft Academy with 106 members. At our first class meeting we elected Mike Dugay, President, Ken Hewes, Vice-President, Jeff Merrill, Secretary, and Joe Anderson, Treas- urer. The representatives to Student Council were Alan Coy, Kristen Anderson, Linda Knowl- ton, and Douglas Smith. We were proud to have two members of our class, Alan Coy and Nancy Snow, run for Student Council President. Our classwas represented in F.F.A., F.H.A., Var- sity Club, debating, Review Staff, sports, cheer- ing, Majorettes, band, and chorus. Alan Smith was elected to the first string of the Little Ten Conference football team. The Junior Class sponsored and was well represented in Junior Prize Speaking, the Junior Plays, and the Junior- Senior Prom. As mighty Seniors, we chose Larry Pullen, President, Alan Smith, Vice- President, Kan- dyce Plumme r, Treasurer, and Mike Fair, Secretary. We were honored and proud to have Joe Anderson elected P r e sident of Student Council and Ken Hewes, Vice-President. We were represented on the Student Council by Larry Pullen, Ernest Lary, and Mike Dugay, Many members ofthe class once more, and for the last time, joined many school organizations. We had many of our boys on the football team, which lost only one game and won the Penquis League title. We now are looking forward to some kind of class trip. The unity and success that our class can achieve when working to- gether was shown in the successful supper we put on for one of our classmates. Now, as seniors, we have become more serious. All of our efforts at F.A., as fruitless as they may have sometimes seemed, will never be forgotten. Many of us plan to continue our education, some already have been accepted at colleges. As we now become individuals, leaving our old classmates, we hope to apply what we've learned at F.A., to the coming years. We are looking forward to the start of our future. M. Fair CSec.J, L. The Band Council, composed of these officers and representatives from each class, led the band in planning and organizing our activities throughout the year. Led by our drum majorette, Kris Anderson, we presented many formations during the half- times of football games. With the addition of many new uniforms, we also played at the Christmas Concert, Pop Concert, Eastern Maine Music Festival, Fort Fairfield Exchange, a Veteran's Day program, and the basketball games. Our dances of the year were attended and en- joyed by parents and students alike. Eleven members made All-State Band, and the entire band enjoyed being hosts to musicians throughout the state. The Dance Band has had a very successful season, and has performed at many occasions. We especially enjoyed their music at the Christ- mas Ball, and all who have heard them will agree that they are tops! DANCE BAND STANDING: J. Plummer, D. Libby,AC Trottier, R.
