Wrestling Team Finishes Sixth In State Somebody forgot to tell the Fox Warriors varsity wrestling squad that this year was supposed to be a rebuilding season, When the season began, many felt that Coach Hopson had a team with much talent but too little experience. They pointed out that only two seniors, Mickey Wright and Jim Sweeney, had their names on the roster. lt looked like a down year for the Warrior matmen. lnstead, the younger guys pulled together and surprised everyone with and 8-2 duel meet mark. Other accomplishments included placing third in their own touranment and fourth in a tourney at Vianney. But the biggest shock came when the team finished sixth in the entire state. That's right, a team expected to be in a condition of restructuring, became one the premier squads in Missouri. Those qualifying for that state meet in Columbia certainly did themselves proud. Their names, with weight in parenthesis, are Stacy Weiland 61265, Wright 61265, Craig Kinder 61825, Kenny Vogel 61885, Sweeney 61455, Troy Mann 61555, Jerry Eaten 61675, Dave Julian 61755 and Randy Lowry 6heavyweight5. Weiland wound up taking sixth at the tournament while Wright took third and compiled a 88-1 record with his only loss being at state. Sweeney's final mark stood at 26-8 and he performed well enough to take second in Columbia. So in the end, a team that all the experts felt was in a state of change turned in one of the finer performances in the history of the school, And with the rich wrestling tradition that Fox has, that is a fine accomplishment. Coach Hopson has already said that since so much of the team is returning for next season, the squad should be stronger than ever. 64 - Wrestling Coach Hopson works on Mickey Wright's eye during practice. And after seeing his accomplishments, no one wonders why. Weele after week, meet after meet, Rodle lsept raclsing up victories. When the state meet rolled around in early November, the senior was still undefeated. But alas, the store championship was not in the offering, Radle had to settle for second that day, Even though Radle wos the stor, he certainly wasn't the only runner that made a contribution to the squad, which Coach White said was the best team in the history of cross country here at Fox. Other runners who qualified for state were Steve McFadden, Stacey Wetland, Jeff Henderson, Tom Kirlsley and Jeff Boyd. All of the runners involved in the '85 season lsept moving, and Coach White feels that next year's program could be the best yet.
