Varsify Sauad Earns l-lard-Foughf Vicfories The 1988 varsiry football Warriors gave rheir fans somerhing TO cheer abour, Since joining rhe Suburban Wesr Conference four years earlier, rhe Warriors faced their roughesr comperirion in foorball hisrory. Bur rhings began TO change rhis season. The Warriors finished wirh a 7-8 record and a 512 record in rhe conference, good enough for second place, The campaign began on a down nore, as rhe Warriors looked lisrless in losing TO Vianney. Jusr as ir appeared ir was going ro be anorher long aurumn rhe team ripped off convincing vicrories over Oakville, Sr. Mary's, and Mehlville before a frusrrafing loss ro Parkway West. The ream rebounded though, and earned hard foughr vicrories over Lafayerre and Lindbergh, buf rhen losr a hearrbreaker TO Kirkwood which cosr rhem rhe conference championship. ln rhe end, rhe ream finished srrong wirh rriumphs over Parkway Cenrral and Norfhwesr. The ballclub iusr missed qualifying as rhe firsr feam in rhe school's hlsrory TO go ro rhe srare playoffs, and wifh rhe ralenr Coach Kappler and his sraff had ro pick from if was no wonder why. On offense, quarrerback Ryan Lewis srood ar rhe helm wirh such players as rhe Gongloff brorhers, and srars like running back Jim Sweeney and righr end John Palmer. An offensive line, led by B. J. Bock, Kirk Westmoreland and Dale James, blossomed info a solid effecrive unir. On defense, rhe big srrengrh came along rhe young fronr line. Kevin Whife, Wade Lawrence and Mike Wolff performed splendidly all year long and Kevin Jacobs became a leader of field also did rheir party by playing consisrenr, sready foorball all year f long. y lr was cerrainly a successful season for rhe Warriors, one fhaf will long remain in rhe minds of all the fans.
