District Starts Cable Station Danny Miller acjusts the image an the screen under the scrurinization of friend Pat Schoub. First-day jitters were evident as the Fox CON-o cable channel Isiclsed oft its grand opening in March. ln the programming room off the Medio Center, general manager and radio-television teacher Mr. Miller explained that television is an avenue open to surprises. This proved correct: the opening tape ot a February boslsetball game was shot at the wrong speed, as was the second, bacls-up tape Miller had on hand! This is so exciting - television at its best, Mr. Nliller mugged. Eventually the cable station did get underway with another tape, and the rough edges were smoothed out. While no one will argue that CON-o is state of the art programming, the radio-television students are the first of the county's high schools to orchestrate an educational cable station for northern Jefferson County residents, lt isn't always easy. Sometimes players bob up and down the court at high speed and the sound 'lcomes and goes. Wires, a modulator, cameras, three television monitors and three video cassette recorders are all paclsed in one tiny room. But what they lacls in space, the students seem to malse up in enthusiasm. Initial programs lilse the hypnotist assembly, the '83 Busch Stadium graduation, sports events and the National Honor Society induction inaugurated the first year of CONAO Student programmers wotls diligently to achieve their goal, to give everyone in the school district their chance to appear on television. Students ot the Radio and Television class prepare all the programming and gain valuable communications experience. I wouldn't have thought of going into communications without it, commented senior Scott Meadows. l'lt taught me how to worls with a camera and that's exactly what l wanted. 'llt made me realize that l want to go to a college with a television station even though l'm going to major in engineering, said junior Curtis Thetford. The student programmers enjoy the challenge ot putting a program together, and hope to tap all the possibilities that go with having a cable station in the next couple of years.
