ks. .L S. 4. Orwell Was Wrong, Right? The dreaded year is upon us. But Orwell's bleals fantasy of Big Brother, the Ministry of Truth, and the Thought Police remains just that: a fantasy. Though one-third of the world CChina and the Soviet Bloc? suffers under the weight of totalitarianistic statehood, the rest of the world remains free of oppression. From South Africa to El Salva- dor, from the Phillipines to Libya, and from Chile to Spain freedom reigns. America, most of all, stands as an example of the triumph of human freedom. Orwell believed that by 1984 the government would watch our every move. But there is no Big Brother to watch over us. Mentioning Watergate, FBI wiretapping, or television surveillance in public buildings is begging the question, Only the ungrateful would suggest that computers impinge upon our freedoms. The centraliza- tion of personal and financial records and for-a-fee sharing of these files with potential employers, insurance companies, marlseting and advertising executives, and the government will but serve the mod- ern demands of efficient management. When and where you use your credit card, for example, is of course recorded and centralized for purely innocent reasons. Big Business not Big Brother de- mands computer billing. Orwell believed that by 1984 our thoughts would be controlled by forces beyond out control. Far from being controlled by waves through the air as the citizens of 1984, we live with the blessings of television. NBC, CBS and ABC will continue to assure that Americans do not thinls all the same thoughts. Despite occasional bools burnings, we remain safe from l'Thought Police, The House Sub-Committee on Un-American Activities saw to that and the House Sub-Committee on Communist Intervention in the Nuclear Freeze Movement contin- ues their worls. Orwell's 1984 postulated a 'Ministry of Truth 1 only the govern- ment's 'ltruths reached the people. Our nation remains free from such manipulation. Voluntary prayer and Creationism will not invade our classrooms. Moral values are lsept out of school, and will not influence the proper teaching of sex education, literature, and histo- ry, The educators continue their valiant efforts to prevent anything from impinging upon their teaching of secular humanism, America also remains free of the infamous Newspeals , the incomprehensible language of bureaucrats and the meaningless bob- ble of the uneducated. Meanwhile, the American government fighs for freedom around the world. We have had what President Carter called . . incom- plete success sometimes, but we have had success as well. The American invasion of Grenada is such a success story.
