Their enthusi- asm and hard work affected everyone, and school morale soared to an all-time high. While some critics charge that there is too much violence, too tight a playlist, and too many unimaginative videos on music televi- sion, cirtis cannot argue with the channels popularity. Speaking in Tongues by Talking Heads. .30 millon and rising, that is the latest figure for the selling success of Michael Jackson's al- bum Thrillet. Michael Jacksons explosive suc- cess in 1984 rivals the success of the Beatles in the 'oO's with the impact he has had on to- day's music scene. The figures are unbeliev- able: Thriller won eight Grammy awards, Epic Records reports sales of over a million copies of the album per week, and there are nine songs on the album that have been released as top ten singles. Jackson's reasons for his success stem from a magnetic appeal and flashy dance steps combined with a smoldering vun- erability. The superstar is now seen every- where - on posters, T-shirts, buttons, dolls, and his trademark - one gloved hand - has become as popular as a Beatle haircut or Elvis- inspired sash. Concert Choir travelled to Tan-Tar-a Lodge and Resort in January when asked to perform at the MMEA CMissouri Music Educators Assoc? Convention. Students traveled to Tan-Tar-A by bus and stayed at the resort for two days. We enjoyed swimming, being with friends and most of all singing for the huge audience, said Concert Chori President Terry Lester. The choir sang eight pieces for the select audience of musicians and educators related to the music field. They started the year off with the wnual Halloween malseup worlsshop which uve children in the community the chance to 'ess as their favorite gouhl for Halloween. ln Svember the Fox High Drama Club presented we of the most successful musicals ever to 'ace it's stage. The play drew record breals' g crowds, over BOO people came over both ghts, that is the largest audience we've ever :id here, said the play director Miss Mueth. :ter in the year despite the sad feelings of no aring play, the drama club sponsored still an' 'her successful production, the Third Annual ariety Show. The National Merit Scholar summed up his desire to be involved by saying you only get as much out of school as you put into it. Besides winning awards, Tim says that participating brings lots of free trips and 'lyau'd be surprised how many girls debaters picls up. He enjoys competing 'lto test my mental ability. Tim added, Don't become reconciled, you can't become alienate ed until you've been connected. I Love New York! said twenty Distrlbutive Education students who spent four days in the Big Apple to attend marlseting seminars. The DE. students received advice and learned ad' ditional slsills for future job-hunting and careers. Between sessions, students ate, visited such attractions as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, World Trade Center, and the United Nations. 'Everyone really enjoyed the trip, commented DE. teacher Mr. Duniphan. IJ O ' '15 l I . A fn August C83 thirty-six band students vene tured halffway around the world to visit South Africa. These students performed at several festivals hosted by the Florida Paris High School, whose band students had visited Fox in the previous fall. They also toured Johannesburg, Kruger Wildlife Reserve, and gold mines. The fourteenfday visit was the culmination of many long hours of fundraising and band practices for Mr. Butler and many band students. Mr. Butler described the visit as a 'lance-in-a-lifetime ex- perience to perform in another country and learn customs. Sprechen sie Deutsch? German club mem- bers Steve Balser, Anita Hantschlse, LeAnn Fal cetti, Anna Hudspeth, Chris Beel and Milse An- derson will have a chance to sharpen their slsills as they travel to Germany this summer. The German club students plan to spend twentye four days touring the German countryside. Se Senior! The Spanish club is planning a ten' day summer trip to Mexico City, Taxco, and Acapulco. Ballet performances, native follslore, crafts and visits to historic monuments are planned. Spanish club students Todd Bowerson, Dawn Jones, Sharon Long and Lisa Pfitzinger plant to soale up the southern sun. Weekend Wonders Congratulations to Stuco. This year has prov- en to be one filled with more spirit and class participation, The dances sponsored by Stuco, lr. Class and the Cheerleaders, added to the new rise in spirit at Fox. The Homecoming dance drew a large crowd as did the Winter Coronation dance and other dances held after baslsetball games. Prom was a definite success with a sellout crowd. And a new idea strucls the cheerleaders this year: The Senior Farewell Beach Bop. The seniors lilsed this idea, it gave them the chance to dress lilse a beach bum and dance the night away with the closest of friends. As the year came to a close, Jr, Anna Hudspeth summed up the dances in these words, l'They were a blast, it was great finally seeing people loolsing forward to the dances on Friday nights. Weekends open up many possibilities for activity. The dance craze has spawned night spots lil-te l'Beflexions where teens can dance the night away.
