Sophomores, because it's their first year, traditionally have problems with that wonderful center of knowledge, commonly known as the library. lt's pretty complicated remembering what color pass to bring, how to check out a book, and how to be quiet. In order to better understand the plight of the sophomores, let usjourney with Jane Doe as she contends with library procedural practices, Jane asks for a library pass from her advisor. Remembering that there are two different colors of library passes, she asks for a pink one because it's prettiest. She finds out that the colors serve two purposes: first, to tell if someone is coming from studyhall or a class, second, to discriminate against those who are color blind. The bell rings and she rushes from advisory in anticipation of a fun time and the somewhat more comfortable library. The bell rings right after Jane walks in. Noticing the librarian behind the table, Jane hands her the pass and starts to walk off. But wait! The librarian says in an annoyed tone of voice, You need to sign in, Jane, not understanding why she must sign in when she's already given a pass, complies reluctantly. Then the librarian tries to give Jane back half of her pass. Why are you giving this back to me? Jane asks. So you can give it to the librarian when you leave, is the reply. That's okay, you can have it now, Jane says. Finally, Jane is forced to keep the slip of paper. Upon seeing the tables, Jane looks for someone to sit with. She sees a couple of comrades at one table and decides to join in. The librarian then does her famous only two people to a table routine which incurs a bit of grumbling. Quickly, the librarian states rather loudly, no talking or you'll be kicked out of the library. This is probably why the US. has a problem with literacy. lmpressionable youngsters see the library as a threatening place thereby discouraging reading. Jane is the odd one Cin more ways than one? and ends up sitting alone. Jane decides to get something to read. She goes to the card catalogue and finds one of her favorite subjects, then moves on to put the old Dewey Decimal system into practice. She's pleasantly surprised to find that our library has the goodjudgement to carry Harlequinn romances. Satisfied with her choice, she returns to her seat to read. The book seems to have pretty good plots, imagery, symbolism, and structure, so she decided to check it out Calthough figuratively speaking she already hasl. She's disappointed to find out she has an overdue book because her friend Marcie used her library card. There's only one thing to dog accidently walk out without checking it out. A little later Jane sees people getting up. Unfortunately, so does the librarian. Sit down until I go up there, she says threateningly, Finally, the guardian of books saunters up front. Jane sees that everyone must go through what looks like a couple of solar panels. Jane theorizes what they could be, something you stay between in summer that allows only the tanning rays of the sun to hit your skin, an X-ray machine that allows the librarian to see nude bodies going through, or lenses from a pair of giant punk-rocker sunglasses. Suddenly, it was her turn to walk through. Beep! Deep! Deep! A scream. Waves of humiliation coarsing through Jane's body, Jane falls to the ground thinking she will now have a criminal record for trying to steal a Harlequinn Romance. l'Please step out, says the librarian. Kids file past giggling. The interrogation begins ..,. ,Xen E i - D, E ,... iii Q S lk.
