AWARDS PLAYER or THE YEAR SPORTS WRITER AWARD Joe Cardona was chosen Player of the Year at the annual Football Ban- quet. Joe was presented with a trophy by the Rock Township Lions Club. On a visit to the Washington University campus for a journalism workshop, Tom Newman won second place in the sports writing category against all St. Louis area schools. ORATORICAL CONTEST WINNER HOMEMAKER OF TOMORROW Jo Ann was awarded a medal for her speech in the American Legion Or- atorical Contest held at Fox, after compet- ing against other fellow students. Joyce Whitrock was winner of the Homemaker of To- morrow contest held at Fox School. For ranking first she was awarded a pin by General Mins. GIRLS' STATE BOYS' STATE Carol Rice at- tended Girls' State at William Woods Col- lege in Fulton. She was sponsored by the auxiliary of American Legion Post 159283. This award is made to the most out- standing girl in the junior class. F. H.S. was rep- resented at Boys' State by Ron Brethold. He was sponsored by American Legion Post 4283 and spent the week of June 14 learn- ing about government through activities at Boys' State.

Planned Progress is a program sponsored y annually by Union Electric, in order to in- crease high school students' interest in com- munity planning. Students have fifteen minutes in which to present their program, and may use such visual aids as maps, charts, diagrams or graphs to illustrate needed community im- provements. Each school may have a max- imum of five students to give the oral pres- entation, although an unlimited number may work on visual aids. The students who are judged to have the best program are awarded a full day ed- ucational trip paid for by Union Electric. This trip is inclusive of all students who work- ed on the program.
