PIRAZ stands for Positive Identification and Radar Advisory Zone, and is a new concept in Navy operational control which was develop ed to meet the unusual requirements of our air operations over the gulf of Tonkin. It stems from the fact that the airspace is about the same size and handles at least as much air activity as that around our busiest airports, Los Angeles International for example. Someone has to keep track of all these flights, monitor the air activities, provide rescue assistance when necessary, and see that they get to their carriers or' airfields safely. In addition, FOX as PIRAZ ship, was up front with missiles and interceptor aircraft to make sure none- of the bad guys came through the Gulf of Tonkin toward our aircraft carriers. This task as PIRAZ ship was demanding, and FOX performed it Well, earning its present reputation as Best in the Fleet this ssvm sis W ' V 2-1 , T X f ' MZ! at QXQ48. POWER 9
