Swim Team Has Strong Kick I .I I ll VARSITY SWIM TEAM-Bottom Row: M. Bentzel, K. Scully, J. Green. Second Raw: Mr. Grindle, T. Daley, T. McKenna, J. Gallagher, B Brooks, T. Bradner, D. Natali, G. Brown, J. McCarthy, M. Cannon The boys' swim team, plagued by injury, illness, and ineli- gibility, came back in the second half of the season and won 5 out of 6 meets. The team ended up 3rd in Section 2. In the first part of the season, the swimmers defeated Hempfield, Kiski, and Norwin. Losses came to Seneca, Bur- rell, and McKeesport. They then came on to score the first shut out in the school's history over Kiski, 86-9. A strong effort against the section champs fell short: Seneca 49, Fox Chapel 46. Retaliations were made against Burrell, Q64-31j and McKeesport C51-441 Eight records fell this season-a record itself. Gene Natali took three, the 100 yard backstroke, and the 100 and 200 yard freestyle. Brother Dave's three were in the 100 yard but- terfly, the 200 yard individual medley, and the 400 yard free- style. Kreg Scully broke the diving record with 128.15 points. The medley relay of Gene Natali, Tom Scully, Dave Natali, and Mike Cannon also swam in record time. In the WPIAL championships the medley relay team placed third and Kreg Scully and Gene Natali placed fourth in the diving and backstroke events. These swimmers qualified for the state championships. The team has a new addition to the coaching staff in Dave McCready. Mr. McCready is an F.C. alumnus and swam for the team five years ago. The other coaches are Mr. Grindle, head coach, and Mr. Boyle, diving coach.
