The Scholastic Arts and Crafts Show is held every year at Kaufmann's Department Store. Over 8,000 en- tries were entered in the contest from all over Western Pennsylvania. .Only 1,500 were chosen for exhibit at the Regional Show. Gold keys are awarded for outstand- ing achievement. From these winners, the judges choose the best to represent Western Pennsylvania at the Na- tional Art Show in New York. Out of the 250 Gold Key Winners, Fox Chapel was extremely well repre- sented With nineteen winners, pictured at the right. Eleven of these students went on as Western Pennsyl- vania representatives, at the Nationals. At the National Show Mary lVlcCoy was awarded Gold Medal Winner, Outstanding, and Valerie Sunseri' gained an Honorable Mention. All the art students participated in the Spring Con- cert and Art Festival held at the High School in mem- ory of Mr. Stanley Fleming. All types of art work were on display including scratchboard, pencil drawing, jew- elry, and pottery. At the Shady Side Art Festival, Chuck Aber won a First Prize for his work. Man Awards MRS. Mrs. Kighfs favorite lime of day is third period, and she would have liked to have been a Veterinarian. Mr. Knauer likes lo play the guitar and read philosophical and history books. Mr. Springmanis devotion to all facets of the Band was the driving force behind all the successes. ln the C.M.U. sponsored Carnegie Awards Festival, the Symphony Band was placed among the top high school bands in Western Pennsylvania. lt achieved the highest rating available, usuperior ratingf, thus tying North Hills for first place in a field of eight bands in Class A. Pictured on this'page are the three other award winning groups. Mr. Beck's Percussion Ensemble and Mr. Sammelis Trombone Quartette were awarded excellent ratings, the highest rating available in each class. The First and Third Woodwind Quin- tettes achieved the next highest rating- Honors.,' In individual competition, eight band members were rated from Excellent to '6Honorable Mention. Mr. Springman is solely in charge of high school music. A High School Orchestra was re-formed, and Mr. Springman gave a new standing to the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs. These groups, together with the ensembles, participated in the Fine Arts Fes- tival, which was presented in memory of Mr. Stanley Fleming, former High School Director of Choral Music, who died in the spring. MRS, JEAN THOMAS MR. JOHN KRONMILLER District Food Service Director. Head Custodian Despite the confusion of unfinished construction work, staff members working behind the scenes helped to keep Fox Chapel High School running smoothly. To many stu- dents the day ends at 2:20 P.M.g but to the custodian, work has only just started. A crew of thirteen men and women works together to clean the halls and classrooms, making them presentable for the next day. The school certainly could not do without them. Mrs. Thomas and her competent staff at cafeteria work- ers managed admirably despite the uncompleted kitchens and cafeteria and the rushed periods. On March fifth, two hot plate lines and one a la carte line opened. Turkey Dinner with all the trimmingsf' was served. The cafeteria also prepared the food for the All-Sports and Allegheny Valley Band Banquets. Thanks must be extended to these ladies, who, since 1966, have provided a free luncheon for the seniors out of their own cafeteria funds. A lot of work goes into this lunch, as well as into all daily' lunches. On ax regular day perhaps over 2,000 cookies are made, 1,800 brownies or maybe 2,400 pieces of pizza.
