Mathematics Teaches The mathematics department offers a complete academic program which enables a student to begin algebra in eighth grade and complete a course in calculus before graduating from high school. The first course, Algebra l, introduces the ideas of vari- ables and equations. Students learn to solve equations and perform other operations with algebraic numbers. Geom- etry studies the properties of lines and points, by themselves and in combinations. Theorems concerning triangles and' other forms are derived and applied. Algebra ll, a contin- uation from Algebra l, emphasizes the solutions of more complex equations. A section on how to use the slide-rule is also included. Trigonometry takes material from all of these courses and applies it to the study of triangles and trigonometric functions. The calculus course emphasizes de- rivatices and integrals, and their practical applications. Theoretical proofs are introduced but not emphasized. For most students it is intended as a course that will help them in a calculus course in college. A fha
