Freshmen take a one-semester course in both Geography and Civics. All the geographical aspects of Europe, the U.S.S.R., S.E. Asia, and Latin America are studied. In preparation for sophomore World History, they learn a brief history of the peoples of the world. The topography of these countries is studied and the cultural aspects of the societies are also taught, forming a foundation for the senior Seven Social Studies teachers like to chaperone. In January and June, five students are chosen to participate in Municipal Day. At these times they spend the day with municipal officials and inspect various barbecued hot dogs. Teaches: Earth es: Wrestling' Knowledge Of The Physical World Stresse Mr. DeWald's Physics II class worked up demonstrations and lectures illustrating different fields in elementary physics. The talks were on sound, color and light, magnetism, electricity and magnetism, gravitation, the gas laws, and static electricity. These lectures were presented throughout the second semester at a sixth grade level at the Boyd, Blawnox, Fairview, and Aspin- wall Grade Schools. Physical Science class discovers the Law of Gravity. - 3 - - l Mi 24 The old General Science course, a requirement for freshmen, was replaced by a new course called Earth and Space Science. It was felt that instead of introducing the student to a course of samplings from Chemistry, Physics, etc., it would be of greater value if a course were taught emphasizing the earth on which he lives. The main objective of this course is attempting to show the student his relationship, and man's relationship in general, to his earth. Units in this course include oceanography, a study of the oceans and their compositiong meteorology, a unit interested in the theory behind weather forecastsg and paleontology, where the evolution of animals is studied through fossils. Students learn to read topographical maps, distinguishing the surface features of the earth.
